KSR-9684

The final USA Today Coaches Poll of the 2016-17 season is out and Kentucky finds itself ranked fifth in the rankings. John Calipari predicted a fifth-place finish in his latest Cal Cast released last week.

Two other SEC schools cracked the top 10: South Carolina at No. 6 and Florida at No. 10. The mighty ACC had only one representative in the top 10.

Here it is:

1. North Carolina
2. Gonzaga
3. Oregon
4. Kansas
5. Kentucky
6. South Carolina
7. Arizona
8. Villanova
9. UCLA
10. Florida

Not that it matters but how does Kansas rank ahead of us when they lost to the team that lost to the team that beat us?

I came to comment and say the exact same thing. And if I’m SC, I’m pissed I’m 6th.

Fifth is bogus. We beat the National Champion once, and lost to them only by a last second shot.We played them tougher than anybody except Oregon.
Gonzaga had an easy path to the title game, with two of the better teams, UCLA and Oregon, moved out of the West region.
      I say THIRD.

I’m getting tired of ending up behind teams that we would’ve beat had we had an opportunity to play them.

Or, teams we would have beaten if the refs hadn’t screwed us.

We’ll be ranked number one in most first round draft picks though! Nothing gets more exciting then that. We’re crushing the competition for OAD banners.

That didn’t stop them from winning a championship. Or UNC from just winning one.

Shut up you idiot! We have more sustained success year in and year out under Cal. Its your expectations of winning a title every year that is wrong. So you’d rather have Bill Self? How many titles does he have at KU since he been there? But he wins the Big 12 every year.

The only team who don’t have one and done players right now, simply suck at recruiting.

You don’t have to call me an idiot for stating my opinion. I’ll gladly let you state yours. And no I don’t expect a banner every year. That’s very unreasonable. But with the amount UK pays Cal and all the hype put into his teams. The amount of talent he’s had at UK. I truly believe there would be more then one championship to show for it. Yes in the end we always judge on championships. In 20 years no one will remember this team went to the E8. 2017 will just be the year UNC one the championship. We are UK. We are supposed to be greater then our rivals. Not equal or in some cases (Duke and UCONN) less then. referring to championships that is.

Stan,it might make you feel better to look at the program this way;If you count the Helms championships from way,way back, and the NIT championship(that back in the day meant more than the newly formed NCAA),then the undefeated team that didn’t play in the postseason because Rupp boycotted playing, then that means we have 12 championships. That should make you feel better.Or(not).Get a grip for your own sanity.

UConn wasn’t the best team in 2011 or 2014. They simply got hot at the right time. The NCAA tournament is a crapshoot.

It doesn’t matter how you play on the entire season. The ultimate goal is championships. They won those two. UNC looked like crap losing to Duke. But played a good enough tournament to win it all. I’m tired of us not playing good enough to win it all. Choking against wisconsin. Choking against WVU. We’re lucky to have the one championship we did win. People make fun of Bill Self saying they just ran out of time, but it’s true. They made the furious comeback and it was a lucky Marquise teague 3 that gave us the cushion at the very end. We could have easily lost that one.

Okay, anyone playing UCLA and UNC back to back in the NCAA tourny is probably not going to win both. Those are two very good teams rates top 10 and some top 5 polls. Before that we had a top 10 kenpom team WSU. If the end goal is a championship which it is for every Cal team, then part of the objectives would be to be playing your best basketball when the time comes. UK in just about every NCAA tourny I can recall since Cal has played their best in March. No other coach has been as consitent as Cal in March. PERIOD! You want K, then have him but they also have more early exits and baffling losses than most other Schools! When we lost to Wisky, WVU and UNC in those years those were the only teams that could honestly beat us on any given night. They were bad matchups for the teams we had at those times, respectively. Wisky, had Dekkar (which if Poythress wasnt injured then we would have had the perfect defender) and he gave us problems all night. WVU played that Zone and we werent a strong shooting team and we went 6-34 or something like that (lost by 6). UNC had too many big bodies downlow for us to manage effectively. Pls, early foul trouble straddles your starting 4 rotation. We arent getting beat by teams we shouldnt get beat by. We are getting beat by teams that were really good and in 3 out of 7 times that team won the title. When Cal leaves you cant possibly convince me you will be happier than you are now. These are great days to be a UK fan. Enjoy the ride and yes, there will be more championships in the future. Cal is here currently till 2022. He definitely gets 1 more and possibly 2 if we get the right luck in certain games.

I’ve said it before. I don’t think it’s even reasonable to want a title every year. It’s impossible. I just feel when you pay top dollar for a coach and consider yourself the “Gold Standard” that’s not my word choice either. When you consider yourself the gold standard that means you should be doing better then the others. How can we be the Gold Standard when others are winning championships at a greater rate then we are?

Stan, you still here? We’ve yet to hear your grand plan for winning championships. So you don’t want elite one-and-done players, dynamic players that any coach, including Coach K and Self, would give their right arm for.
You want less talented players that will be here four years. So go recruit them when you become a head coach.
You will have a decent team once every four years, when they’re seniors…maybe. Along the way you’ll lose to teams like Miami of Ohio, Akron, Gardner-Webb, and Western Kentucky.
Your teams won’t go 32-5, win a conference that had 3 teams in the Elite 8, have a legitimate run at the Final Four and the Championship. But maybe somebody will pay you for that…enjoy.

I am fine with the situation as it is. It’s entertaining and the program makes lots of money. BUT as long as it stays he same, we will rarely win titles.Just sit back and watch the young guys come and go. It’s about them, not whether we hang banners.

    • gocatsgo08
      5:46 pm April 4, 2017 Permalink

That’s completely reasonable. Forget all the success that we have had, the success in things that we can control. Forget all the great seasons, the great teams, and the great players. Lets focus on the one aspect of our success that is based on luck! Do you even understand the concept of a one and done tourney versus a “best of” tourney? If you answered yes, ask yourself again, just to be sure.

And by the way, Duke, UNC, UL, and anyone else are “rarely” gonna win championships as well. I mean 5 or 6 championships in over 100 years does count as rare, right? Of course we have 8, but that sucks doesn’t it? I mean, using your logic, we should have at least 50 titles right now, right? What’s the name of your imaginary team that has won 63 national championships?

Hold on, we have 8 titles, and we are second in the country? That’s ridiculous! Let’s see…if we add together the top 3 schools with the most titles in history, they only account for roughly 20% of all the titles ever won? WHAT!? Do you see the fault in your thinking? At best, ANY school is “only rarely” gonna win a title. It’s called March MADNESS for a reason, and not just because of the upsets during the first weekend. If you want more of a sure thing, go watch the NBA.

I understand the difficulty of the lose and you’re out tournament. But just answer me this. Are you fine with Duke and Uconn having more titles then we do since Cal took over? He say’s we’re the “Gold Standard”. How can that be when they’re winning more titles then he is? We don’t need to win them all. We just need to win them more then our rivals. And right now we aren’t doing that.

    • bluetide

There’s too much luck and too much dependence on officiating to judge Cal by titles Stan.

Hell yes, I’m fine with being a Cat fan and enjoying the success that we have had. I feel fortunate that we have had the ride that we’re on. Am I going to allow missing out on a championship when we have the second most in history already to overshadow all the other great things that have happened in this program? Hell no. We are the Gold Standard, whether you want to believe it or not. WE ARE UK!
