Kentucky Overcomes Double-Digit Second Half Deficit to Defeat Florida 65-54

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Kentucky turned a tight game into a 65-54 win thanks to a dominant final eight minutes in Gainesville.

A back and forth affair in the first half, Florida began to pull away once Tyler Herro picked up his second foul.  He had ten points on 4-for-4 from the field when he was forced to the sideline for the final eight minutes of the half.

The Gators turned a 33-29 halftime lead into an 11-point advantage with 14 minutes remaining.  After struggling to finish in the paint against Florida’s physical double-teams, the Cats came alive.  UK used a 10-0 run to get within striking range, then closed the game by outscoring Florida 22-7 in the final eight minutes.

Herro led the Cats in scoring with 19 points, P.J. Washington had a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double and Keldon Johnson contributed 10 points and eight boards.

Dakich called it with just over 13 minutes to go and Fla at the line with 11 point lead. He said if the guy misses those FTs ky is coming back. Exactly what happened. Gotta give the man credit, hate him or love him

That was an impressive win. Defense and rebounding carried us back from the brink. You have to like that – two things that are indespensible for a Championship run.

This was an impressive win. To win when you are not playing “well” is the sign of a good team. Herro may be the most underrated 4* in the country.

That Cats play during the last 8 minutes of the game was incredibly impressive its virtually impossible to come back down 11 on the road against Florida as hostle as that environment is in Gainsville. That usually doesn’t happen but the cats found a way they played well through out the game could of been better on the glass but they played well none the less. Just couldn’t get shots to fall that happens sometimes after a really hot shoot game like they had against Vandy. Great win we should move up a spot in the AP poll on Monday. Go Cats.

Haven’t seen that kind of response to adversity from our team(s) in a long while. I’m starting to get a pretty good feeling about this team. It’s just a feeling for now but the talent is there and so is the toughness. We start shooting a little bit better and watch out guys.

    • Ridge Runner

I think so too 1715. It’s been awhile since seeing a response like that. PJ getting onto folks, energy shift, desire, etc. All good teams will face it on the road and that response or lack of determines championship caliber teams.

and let’s be honest, this game was an epitome of we are everyone’s Super Bowl. Crowd, Gators playing better than they had all year as cited by Dan, energy, —so yes, we missed some shots and lost at times but the opposition was in full beast mode too.

Fire Cal. We only won by 11, Florida can’t even beat a middle school team. These kids have no heart and are only playing for their draft stick. Cal has zero clue what he’s doing, we need to reanimate Red Aurbach, pretty sure he’d come out of death to coach UK.

Yadda, yadda, yadda….you miserable trolls keep on talking your smack about our coach and our team, the rest of us will continue watching a great team in the making. Go Big Blue!

    • syrin23
      7:07 pm February 2, 2019 Permalink

The only mistake Cal made this game was sitting Tyler the last five minutes of the first half when he was the only one playing well. Tyler is not a risk to foul out. Plus, that means he hadn’t had any game action for a half hour and was a little slow to get going the second half. Jemarl Baker, for being a great shooter, is a terrible shooter. I doubt he’s even shooting 20% on the season. Other than that, good coaching. I was stunned they threw the Hail Mary at the end that PJ gave away.

It was a win which is far better than a loss but UF is horrible. You people act like this was an amazing happening, NO it should have happened. Here are the 12 UF wins…Charl South, LaSalle, Stanford, North Fl, WVU, Mercer FGCU, Butler, Ark, UGA, A&M, Ole Miss. Yep, that is it 12 wins that WKU could have won. Losses to FSU by 20 plus, TCU where they scored 50, USC at home, Butler, Oklahoma at home. UF is not good, period. Now any road win is good for us as we have proven we can lose to bad teams on the road {see Bama}. Like I said after the Kansas win, glad we won but we should have. Kansas is now 1-5 on the road losing to a terrible WVU, Texas, Oklahoma and Pac 12 ASU. We acted like we did something special beating them at home, NO, that should have happened. I agree the team looks to be getting better but hard to judge vs SEC teams as they are not good. UT looks pretty good and did beat Gonzaga and I want to put LSU as good but jury is still out as they have not beaten anyone. The rest {excluding UK} are average to well below average teams.

      9:06 pm February 2, 2019 Permalink

Hey Eeyore, that Arkansas team that Florida beat knocked off LSU at home – that same LSU team you said is pretty good. Also, I guess Izzo and Mich St must suck too, since they lost at home to an awful IU team coming off a 7 game skid. Going back to Florida, they are always tough at home when they have a big crowd. I don’t care how much you try to rain on our parade, this was a gutsy comeback win for a team whose shots were not falling in the early going. This team continues to learn and grow with every game, and I am going to enjoy watching them the rest of the season. Sorry, but much as you try, you ain’t stealing my joy.

P.S. your dookies are going down in the 2nd weekend.

Can be said if 98.3% of current D-1 coaches bigolblue, what’s your point? Also, that one title you keep making fun of…all the coaches you’ve ever mentioned that could or would replace Cal…none of them have even sniffed their first. Cal puts us in the middle of national contenders every single year. That was a nice butt whoopin’ y’all got from UNC today. Almost as bad as the one we gave y’all.

That was a big big win for the Cats…very important win. That win boosts their position for a #2 seed and keeps them in hunt for a #1 seed, depending on other top teams. We need Michigan too keep dropping. Still alot of ball to go and Cats making some noise! Go Cats

The problem is we have to face UT twice towards the end of the year which means if you lose one or both, you drop in the rankings at the end of the year just before the seeds are made. If we played them twice already like we have Vandy, and lost both, we still could climb and get a good seeding. Let’s hope we win every time and it doesn’t matter.

Dude, everyone, even me, the “homer” isn’t going out and saying “lock it up, we got number 9”. But if you can honestly look at this team and still say the same ignorant BS you did about them in November, then I was wrong about you. I thought maybe you were just a disgruntled fan who caught his wife in bed with billy Clyde or something, I’ve even went as far as to feel bad for you, bringing you up in my nightly prayers. But now…methinks you may just be a legit Louisville troll, which actually makes it better. If you’re a real U.K. fan and talking smack, then we gonna have issues. But if you’re just a jealous troll, who cares, you ain’t even on UK’s level.

Big, comeback win for the cats. Had we played hard defense the whole game and not just the last 8 minutes, we would have won by 20. And why the hell does Jamarl Baker play significant minutes? I know Herros in foul trouble, but they need to go big. Bakers a supposed 3 point specialist but missed 3 completely wide open today. And was beat on defense at least 3 times. Give his minutes to Richards or Montgomery.

Well small minded individuals, I’m here, as always. I’ve always said from first day, I’m a UK fan to the bone, but not much of a Cal fan. Murder me all you want. If you think I’m quiet because we came from behind to beat a team that probably doesn’t make the NIT, you’re wrong. I’m quiet because you 10 KSR body guards will scream Cal is best, we’re getting #9, if they win by 10 or lose by 34. We have proof of that.

Oh my Jenny I’m really offended lol. So I could have posted a video proving my point too but what would that prove? It would still be an opinion and not fact. And if I remember correctly Kentucky won the game. You don’t know more than Cal and never will but that doesn’t stop you from criticizing him. But only when the Cats are struggling. We haven’t heard from you much lately which is no surprise. But when they lose a game you will be here with your criticism of Cal once again. You’re another bandwagon fan.
