Kentucky outlasts Louisville 75-73

USATSI_9017110_154849602_lowres

That, my friends, was a classic. After 40 minutes of grueling basketball, Kentucky came out on top, beating Louisville 75-73.

Tyler Ulis was the star, scoring 21 points and dishing out 8 assists. He did so much, he even blocked a shot. Alex Poythress always gets up for Louisville and today was no exception. Poythress had 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. With Isaiah Briscoe out due to ankle injury, Dominique Hawkins gave the Cats a huge boost off the bench with 13 points.

At the beginning of the second half, it looked like the Cats had it in the bag until a series of sloppy turnovers tied it back up with five minutes left. At times, it felt like Kentucky tried its hardest to lose, but in the end, was able to hang on for the win, their fourth straight over the Cards.

Now go celebrate.

An ugly win, But a win. Someone find that Murray dunk attempt. Maybe got fouled, maybe not. But if he had made it, that coulda been doty.

That play, like most of the game, was Murray trying to do things Murray can’t do

I don’t call it an ugly win we had.some mistakes and mental errors down the stretch but otherwise we played a pretty solid game. Now had we won and played like we did against Ohio St. that would have been an ugly win!!

Iirc, the ball rattled in the rim. He had it, similar to the Skal putback attempt. An inch here or there and those would have been huge. Murray’s was reckless, but nearly amazing.

The shot clock violation turnover may have been his fault, but otherwise Dominique Hawkins played a good game today. I don’t think we win without his scoring and other contributions. He basically filled the void that was left by Briscoe not playing. Good job Dominique!!

Hawkins was the difference. 7 TOs for Murray was terrible. Pitino standing on the court yelling in the ref’s ear while play was going on and no technical…really Doug Shows!!. Cal has got to get their offense started earlier in the shot clock in these late game situations. Cost us the Wisconsin game, almost cost us this one. We were attacking with Poythress building a big lead and then we stopped ?!?
End of the day, another win against UL and Pitino…I can breath !!
    GO CATS !!

I don’t blame Hawkins for that last play. It’s hard to shoot with a steaming load in your shorts

This team is absolutely terrible. UL is as well. Both will be extremely fortunate to make it to the NCAA tournament and then out of the first weekend.

I want attention for pointing out how bad this team really is? Just how many 35′ jump shots were taken by UK today? How many times offensively did they settle for the long bomb because of once again no movement or penetration? UL’s D is pitiful. Only during very small periods of the game were UK able to take advantage of it. UK once again got way out rebounded. Too many turnovers both forced an unforced.
      Way too many bad decisions.

Ulis had an incredible game, but until today he has ALWAYS been mediocre at best from outside the arc. Poythress looked great for about 8 minutes, but the rest of the game, per usual, he was a non factor. Particularly on the defensive end. Labissiere is a liability on both ends. He is not good. Murray plays way out of control and again doesn’t make good decisions. I love Lee’s enthusiasm but he plays with reckless abandon and is generally in foul trouble (today was no exception). Briscoe is generally a one man machine gun. Likely a good thing he didn’t play today because it allowed Hawkins to get some minutes and to make some big time shots. However, he has proven that he is not a reliable scorer. Mathews was not effective on either end.

I want nothing more than for this team to win the SEC, win the SEC tournament and then go deep in the NCAA tournament, but reality is what it is…and doing all of those things with this squad is not going to happen. =(

LMAO. Kentucky beat Louisville without Isaiah Briscoe, nonexistant Skal Labissiere, 7 turnovers from Jamal Murray, and giving up 21 offensive rebounds.

      Suck it.

I guess you missed the part were I commented on how terrible UL is as well.

First of all it is generally favorable to not have grammatical errors in your post when telling someone they are a moron.

Second, dispute anything I’ve said. Face it this team is not good. Looking at the SEC schedule it is easy to see at least 6 losses in league play and Vandy winning the conference.

Last, I won’t have to convince anyone. The team will do that all on their own.

And no, I was never “scared to death” that we’d lose to Hooker U. I predicted a 7-10 point win. We had you down by as much as 16 at one point though. But its a rivalry game – its usually closer than it should be – kinda like when our NIT team only lost by 3 at the bucket.

But you are right – Louisville is a suck team. 🙂

Great to see the Cats win. Seemed like they lost some momentum late when they started having Tyler take the ball out of bounds vs receiving it. They did it a number of times and it wasn’t as successful as when Tyler received the ball and broke down the press. Willis got yanked out of the game when he stepped out of bounds. Bigger question was why didn’t Cal have someone else taking out the ball? No need to change up something that is working.

The UK vs UL game is rarely aesthetically pleasing. Both team’s defense makes the other’s offense look bad. Has always been like that.

Skal’s stat line- 3 rebounds 2 pts and 1 steal.

Glad we won. Cal damn near blew another game. Why have Tyler in bounds the ball when he is your BEST free throw shooter? Why pull the ball and stop running the offense when you’re up with 5:30 left in the game? Just like the WI game, but we stole this one. We are AWFUL at holding the ball until the last 3 seconds. We only got lucky with it today. I’m sick of Leach never questioning that.

Ulis should not be inbounding, he needs to be catching the ball. Why did Cal call off the press? Skal is now officially a project.

A win is a win is a win.

The more things change the more they stay the same…Kentucky beats Louisville yet again.

That being said this team still has a lot of work to do. Towards the end of the game I was having flashbacks to the Wisconsin game last March…everyone seemed afraid to make a play, take the shot. That shouldn’t happen, not a third of the way through the season.

But again…a win is a win is a win.

Thankfully Slick Rick was just a bit worse coach than Cal again today. Against a team with a thinking coach who starts fouling us and it could be very different.
