Kentucky officially moves Holiday Hoopsgiving appearance to December

Kentucky’s appearance in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event has officially been pushed back to December.

Wednesday afternoon, the event announced Kentucky’s matchup against Georgia Tech – originally scheduled for Nov. 27 – would now take place on Dec. 6.

KSR broke the news on Saturday evening that Kentucky was in discussions with Hoopsgiving officials about a potential move in hopes of creating space for a multi-team event in Lexington the first week of the season.

When asked for an official confirmation from UK this past weekend, the school was not able to provide any scheduling updates at this time, noting that the program is simply “thrilled to have a starting point for the upcoming season.”

“We cannot confirm or provide any schedule updates at this time,” a UK spokeswoman told KSR. “As we said a couple of days ago, we are thrilled to have a starting point for the upcoming season and look forward to preparing for the 2020-21 year, but right now we do not have any further details. We will continue to work with the SEC and with our opponents to establish a revised schedule that will both prepare and challenge our team while adhering to safety protocols.”

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports was the first to report the Lexington pod event featuring Detroit, Hartford and Richmond.

As for the Holiday Hoopsgiving, Kentucky vs. Georgia Tech will tip off the event on Dec. 6, followed by the following games on Dec. 12:

  • Alabama vs. Clemson
  • LSU vs. South Florida
  • Mississippi State vs. Dayton
  • Auburn vs. Memphis

With this move now official, Kentucky’s first four events of the season are now confirmed:

  • Lexington pod (begins first week of the season on Nov. 25)
    • Kentucky will play Detroit Mercy, Hartford and Richmond
  • Champions Classic (tentatively scheduled for Dec. 1)
    • Kentucky will play Kansas
  • Holiday Hoopsgiving (scheduled for Dec. 6)
    • Kentucky will play Georgia Tech
  • Kentucky vs. Notre Dame (scheduled for Dec. 12)

From there, the Big 12/SEC Challenge also remains on schedule to be played in January 2021, giving the Wildcats yet another non-conference opportunity for the upcoming season.

So that is six non-conference games so far. We need three more games to get to the maximum of 27 games which includes 18 conference games. Right? GO CATS!!!!
