Kentucky is the preseason No. 1

Kentucky is the preseason No. 1 overall team in CBSSports.com’s ridiculously early Top 25. Duke, Arizona, Wisconsin and Kansas round out the top five.

I can’t imagine anyone putting UK anywhere else in the rankings so it’ll be unanimous by the time the season rolls around.

Back-to-back preseason champs!

To be fair, they do have the top recruiting class in the country. Duke will be good next year but Kentucky will be great.

Okafor is the real deal. Jones is a nice player, but nothing special. No way he should be rated above Mudiay. Winslow is solid, and a good defender. If Grayson Allen sees more than 10 minutes a game next season I will be shocked.

They have a couple of nice guards. Jefferson is an ok, undersized 4. 1 game of Okafor getting in foul trouble, and they’re done.

Duke brings back 46.8% of their minutes, 39.9% of their points, and 46.2% of their rebounds. Combine that with their 4 Mickey D AAs and you gotta pick them #1.

      Gottlieb’s preseason top 10:
      1) Duke
      2) Arizona
      3) Oklahoma State
      4) Kansas
      5) Wisonsin
      6) Michigan

Anyone thinking that Duke will even be competitive against Kentucky is having flashbacks on the 1990s.
If Duke plays Kentucky this year Kentucky would win by 15+.
Be aware that the bracket locations are the best they have been for Kentucky that I have seen. Watch the NCAA Tournament members to scheme to give Duke, and NC, a path to the final four that is less than 100 miles from their university while trying to give Kentucky (again) the hardest bracket in history as they did this year.
      Balance? No.
      Biased? Yes.
      Kentucky will dominate this year.
I don’t care to hear, or have repeated, the 40 and 0 mantra. That is meant to set the bar so high it puts undue pressure on Kentucky and should they lose the announcers (aka “we are ACC”) will talk about it 24/7.
I have been a UK fan these approximately 6 decades now that this is the most talented team I have ever seen (including the incoming freshmen).
Ladies and gentlemen lets enjoy these glory days and focus on getting Coach Cal to sign a mutually beneficial 10 year extension.
This team has a true chance at history.
It will be a pleasure to see them strive to obtain it.

      Good post.

The “ACC worshiping” announcers will find a way to spin it so that Duke is admirable and that Kentucky is somehow beneath the universities (including but not limited to) such as; Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, and Kansas.

Kentucky fans, and every resident of Kentucky, are good honest hard working people. They deserve respect on the court and off. Until we achieve this we should hold ESPN, and all of the writers and announcers, accountable and in unison say ENOUGH.

These young men are of; character, talents, work ethic, and I would put them against any other program as far as GPA and that they use their blessings to help others like Wall and Cousins did this year by each donating one million dollars to charity. This was a public display but they do just as much without the public knowing.

Kentucky is a great Commonwealth (as opposed to a state) that has great Universities. This should be respected, and acknowledged, for every person on the court/field/etc. and for those off.

I wish that we could just temper the expectations a bit and just be happy that we are going to have a great team next year. All of the predictions and talk of 40-0 comes back to bite us every year. I am so happy that we have all of these guys back, and with the incoming freshmen we have the potential to have a very special season… but there is a reason that the games are actually played on the court. Can we just rejoice in the fact that we will have a great team without going over-the-top and counting #9 before it happens?

No way the hype machine will be mellowed down now but 99% of us are on board to not buy into the 40-0 nonsense. It just takes one bad game on the road for that to be gone just like that. Not likely.

    • Crazy8s
      3:24 pm April 25, 2014 Permalink

I’m in no way endorsing 40-0 expectations, but can we really stop jumping to ridiculous conclusions? “40-0 comes back to bit us every year”? Yes, 1 out of 1 is “every year”, but a sample of one proves almost nothing. (Ex: Kevin Ollie is 1 for 1 coaching in NCAA Tournaments, so he will obviously win every year he makes it, right? I hope you realize how absurd that sounds.) Yes, 40-0 is a ridiculously hard goal, but every team has goals that are hard to achieve. That’s what motivates you to work hard every step along the way. If 40-0 is ever going to happen, it will be because a team was motivated to get better each and every game and never accept defeat. That’s a goal worth striving for and a team I want to cheer for.

I agree with the above….that we should be MUCH better defensively, as we lose two BAD “on-the-ball” defenders (Young and Randle)….also ULIS will make Andrew a better ball handler facing him in practice every day…now let’s hope the FREE THROW SHOOTING improves, and we will hang #9 !!

    • gazza90
      4:05 pm April 25, 2014 Permalink

I would say that Randle and Young were capable, but inconsistent, on-the-ball defenders and really bad off-the-ball defenders. If you remember, I believe after Young left his guy twice late against Michigan to give up a 3, Cal said in the post-game press conference that we can’t win with him (meaning Young) on the floor. Randle was better on D in the toruney, in fairness. But UK will definitely post a MUCH better def. efficiency next year due to experience and personnel.

Center – WCS, Johnson, Towns, Lee
PF – Lee, Poythress,Lyles, Johnson, Willis, Towns
    SF- Poythress, Booker, Willis, Harrison
    SG- Harrison, Booker, Harrison
    PG- Harrison, Ulis, Hawkins
Hows that for a depth chart?!
Biggest question next year will be whether or not Coach Cal can coach a squad beyond a 7 man rotation? His typical 8th and 9th men only get 4-6 minutes. He absolutely CANNOT do that routine next year?!! He will have no choice but to use at least a 10 man rotation, with each player getting at least 12-15 minutes. And that’s not factoring in Willis and Hawkins next year, and i think both should see legitimate minutes. Especially Willis. I hope neither one transfers out.
I’m not at all confident that Cal can or will adjust his scheme to a 10-12 man rotation.
However, any way you look at it, we will have a truly phenomenal team. He should just literally run teams in the ground. Go all out 94 feet, and sub out in waves every 5-6 minutes!!
He will habe big men who will run the floor, so he needs to exhaust the enemy.

SF: Alex Poythress / Devin Booker / Marcus Lee / Derek Willis
PF: Trey Lyles / Marcus Lee / Karl Towns / Marcus Lee
    C : Willie Cauley-Stein / Karl Towns / Dakari Johnson

    Andrew Harrison – 25 minutes
    Tyler Ulis – 10-15 minutes
    Dominique Hawkins – 5-10 minutes
    Aaron Harrison – 25 minutes
    Devin Booker – 15 minutes
    Alex Poythress – 25 minutes

    Karl Towns – 20 minutes
    Dakari Johnson – 15 minutes

ESPN, Vitale, Bilas, and 99.9% of the talking heads (which the vast majority have ties to the ACC) love to praise and support Duke. Andy Katz = blatantly biased and has a 10+ year documented history of disdain for Kentucky. When Vitale does his interview/input from his home just look on the walls and desks and you will see all ACC photos, documents, etc. and nothing from the SEC and/or Kentucky.
They also love to throw jabs, and minimize the greatness of the players – Coach Cal – and Kentucky as a program, about Kentucky and when Duke players go “one and done” its no big deal. Same with Kansas. But when Kentucky has 20+ lottery picks they criticize and minimize.
I watched countless, and read, stories about “regardless of what Kentucky does Duke will be the preseason # 1 and will cut down the nets 2014-2015”. Now they will be grinding their teeth and find some “made up unwarranted reason” to build up other teams/players.
The SEC was trounced in the media this season and the ACC was supposedly one of the strongest conferences, Yet 8th, I repeat 8th, seeded Kentucky went through the hardest NCAA bracket that I have ever seen in my (approximately) six decades of being a UK fan.
I wish that these incoming freshmen gel from day one and that those who returned (including Willis who gets no press or praise but is equally talented) mesh and show the world that they will achieve # 9 and set the stage for # 10 and # 11.
PS – while Coach Cal is undergoing him surgery, and immediately after he has been given anesthesia, lets resign him for a life-long mutually beneficial contract.
