Kentucky is one of Jay Bilas’ five championship favorites

ESPN’s Jay Bilas released “Volume II of The Bilas Index” on Thursday, a ranking of the top sixty-eight teams in college basketball. Bilas refers to his Bilas Index as, “the most dependable and trusted metric of hoop quality and capability in the known universe,” and I think you’re going to like where he ranks the Cats.

In the first tier of the five-tier rankings, you’ll find Kentucky among Bilas’ five NCAA championship contenders. He ranked the Cats fifth on the list, behind Duke, Tennessee, Virginia and Gonzaga, saying, “in all likelihood, the national champion will come from this group.”

Read the part about UK:

5. Kentucky Wildcats

Don’t be too concerned about the loss to LSU. Kentucky is looking more like the team that was ranked No. 1 before the season. Is this team as good as Duke? No. But this team can beat Duke or anyone else. A major difference has been the stellar play of PJ Washington, who is averaging 21 points and almost six rebounds in his past three games. Washington is a legit pro.

For what it’s worth, Kentucky moved to +800 odds to win it all, behind only Duke (+170) and Tennessee (+750) among the favorites on the board. Virginia is also +800, Gonzaga is +900.

We aren’t top 5. I hate to admit it but we’re just not! We can be but not there yet and it’s gonna take a lot to happen. Nick, keldon on d, hagans a jump shot, ejs development, Reid gets off the floor quicker, herro and baker hit open 3s. That’s a long list but very capable of it all. Still feb. go cats!

I perceived this to be top 5 champion favs or who can cut the nets down in April.. and not necessarily how we look this moment. In fact, one could argue how bad pUKe looked in the majority of the Loserville game (UL choked) and say they have top 5 issues.
So, having said that.. I would agree with Jay.

Except we are. I have watched all five of those teams, and every last one of them has some glaring flaws too.

I tend to agree, Wade. This year it’s Duke and everybody else. Yes, i it’s is possible that they could lose, but it’s unlikely.

Don’t think I ever challenged more than one person on here.. lol. I could be wrong and if so, I’ll admit it. But as I mentioned above… pUKe has issues and yes, they are a good team. I just think Jay is saying these 5 can cut the nets down more so than others with more problems. Maybe just a perception thing.

There is no way in hell Duke wins it all. Shooting 29% from the three point line and 250th+ from the FT line. Some team will pack it in the paint, foul them to death, and they will be cold from the outside. Zion is a terrible on the ball defender. Louisville should have won by 30, but stopped being aggressive and stopped attacking Zion, even though he had four fouls.

No, we are a top five team. Every team has issues. I see no u defeated teams out there. I agree with Jay. And, who gives a flip about the 94 feet thing. He has done that at other places, too, hasn’t he? I think sometimes they (sports broadcasters, reporters, analysts) can be jerks and intentionally get UK fans up in arms. DON’T confirm their arrogance by eearing your feelings in your sleeves. Believe you have a team that is a contender and ignore the haters. Pat W said “Whenever you set out to accomplish anything, expect people to try to belittle you, discourage you, and minimize your accomplishments. Don’t let them stop you. Just ignore them, and keep moving forward. That’s what leaders do.” Jim A said “I never anticipate or acknowledge haters. To recognize that they even exist breeds hesitation and uncertainty. Success is founded in one’s surety of thought and action. Once success is evidenced, doubters fall by the wayside.”

During the game Tue night, they showed Vegas odds that No. 1 Tennessee had 12-1 odds to win the title, and UK had 8-1. Evidently the AP and Vegas don’t agree for some reason.
Late as today after the loss to LSU, one outfit has it Duke, Tennessee, followed by UK tied with Virginia.

There is no risk in your statement. Sure, it is very easy to say that. You could say the same thing about UVa and they have a chance. Saying the easy thing is, well…….easy!

In other words saying that any team (other than a heavy heavy favorite) will not win the NCAA is even easier than saying xxxxxx horse will NOT win the Derby. There’s 20 Derby horses. There’s double that in the NCAA tourney seeded #10 or better. Easssy!

Lol, Puke been beat 2 times already and they look beatable many times so it’s 6-8 teams who could win it all and Cats are definitely one of them. Bilas is a jerk who was average as a player and average as a announcer nothing more.

LSU loss is not a bad loss, there a legitimate team. Cats can play with anybody and will, mark it down. Cal the man and we have a very legitimate shot at winning it all.

Frankly, as bad as Hagans was, and as bad as out shot selection was with almost no assists from the PG position, we should have lost by 10+.

To paraphrase Dieden, it is all “a box of chocolates”………neither the cynical UK fans that hold Cal responsible for world hunger know nor the Naive UK fans who still believe the 2013 team could have won it all had Nerlens not been hurt. The middle ground professionally skeptical UK fans are hoping for the best and are cautiously optimistic knowing as Jay wisely said that Duke has better NBA talent but UK can still beat them!

Duke is overrated. Supremely talented no question. But lack of veteran difference makers will be their undoing.

  18. BBNBRIAN

Not counting the Duke game, 3 of our losses are by a total of 5 points! 5 POINTS! We have as good a chance as anyone to win it all. Our boys simply need to figure out how to finish out close games. Have a little faith!

If you believe that you dont know basketball. This team would lose to the platoon team by 25. This team has the same fatal flaw his last two teams have had and that’s no one can get them a basket when they need it. No stud super star to carry the team.

Double N – I disagree. I saw a couple of baskets at the end of the LSU game by the same person. Were you watching that game?
