Now that (most of) the rosters for next season have taken shape, sports networks are beginning to update their preseason college basketball rankings for 2016-17. Rob Dauster over at College Basketball Talk released his new Way-Too-Early Rankings for the upcoming season and he has the Wildcats at No. 2, behind Duke.

2. Kentucky

  • Returning: Derek Willis, Dominique Hawkins, Isaac Humphries, Isaiah Briscoe
  • Newcomers: De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Bam Adebayo, Wenyen Gabriel, Sacha Killeya-Jones, Tai Wynyard
  • Why they’re here: Kentucky is No. 2 – more like No. 1b – because we were concerned about where they would get perimeter shooting from to space the floor. Fox, Monk and Adebayo will let Coach Cal return to his dribble-drive motion past, but the question is just how good of a shooter Gabriel and Killeya-Jones will be at the four and whether or not Willis can slide in and play small forward for a team at this level. After Duke and Kentucky, Dauster has Kansas, Villanova and Oregon to round out the top five. You can see the entire top-25 here.

I’m afraid Duke at No. 1 and Kentucky at No. 2 is going to be the consensus heading into the season.

Let Duke be the one with all the pressure on them for a change, while we just get better.

Duke at 1 and us at 2 doesn’t bother me at the beginning of the year, let’s just flip the order in April.

Briscoe can hit threes. He won a contest.

I like not being no 1. Should be interesting to see if Duke stays up there all year. I assume they will so it’ll be nice to not have that bullseye on the young guys and maybe help make them a little hungrier
