Kentucky is 1-7 against Duke since ’78 title game

Though Kentucky holds an 11-9 lead in the overall head-to-head series, it has been all Duke since the 1978 NCAA Tournament Championship in St. Louis.

The Cats’ only win came in the 1998 South Regional Finals, when it came back from a 17-point deficit in the final nine-plus minutes in the game. That one propelled Kentucky to its seventh NCAA title and its second in three years.

Outside of that Elite Eight meeting, however; the outcomes have not been favorable for Big Blue. Duke won the other seven games in the series since the title game in ’78.

2012: (9) Duke 75, (3) Kentucky 68 (Champions Classic, Atlanta, GA)
2001: (1) Duke 95, (7) Kentucky 92 OT (Jimmy V Classic, East Rutherford, NJ)
1998: (2) Duke 71, (3) Kentucky 60 (Jimmy V Classic, East Rutherford, NJ)
1992: (1) Duke 104, (6) Kentucky 103 OT (NCAA East Regional Final, Philadelphia, PA)
1988: (1) Duke 80, Kentucky 55 (Tipoff Classic, Springfield, MA)
1980: (14) Duke 55, (4) Kentucky 54 (NCAA Mideast Regional Semifinals, Lexington, KY)
1979: (3) Duke 82, (2) Kentucky 76 OT (Tipoff Classic, Springfield, MA)

You know that this tells me?

Duke is due.

Go Cats.

Who cares? We won the one that mattered other than the 92 game.

The one win was against the most talented team Duke ever had (and the most NBA picks up to that time) – and Tubby won it with an inferior team. Still the greatest win in UK history given it lead to a title.

Through out all of our history, DUKE has only beat UK once in a regional final, national semi-final, or national championship…that was in 1992. Also during Coach Rupp’s time and when we played DUKE during the regular season, I cannot remember Coach Rupp losing to Duke…maybe once or twice but NEVER when it counted. No animosity toward them…know the younger people have it. I read their name on the schedule and I think respect and would be a big win for the young team…
