Kentucky in the top three of The Sporting News’ Way-Too-Early Top 25

Kentucky will practically have a brand new team next year, but the amount of talent coming in didn’t stop The Sporting News from putting the Cats third in its Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the 2017-18 season.

“Monk and Fox are predicted as lottery locks, so they’re almost certainly gone,” The Sporting News’ Ryan Fagan writes. “Adebayo is expected to leave, too, though his return would be great for the Wildcats. As always, there is a massive influx of talent on the way – UK’s class is ranked No. 1 in the country, with five five-star guys in the group. Rinse, repeat.”

Initially, number three seems WAY too high for what will likely be an entirely new starting five, but it’s worth pointing out that the core of the incoming talent will have a chance to gel under Calipari this summer on the U19 National Team. Hopefully that gives them a leg up going into the fall.

Who’s #1 in the rankings? Arizona, followed by Duke, although The Sporting News crew says the Blue Devils should expect Marques Bolden back, which may not happen according to last night’s reports. Kansas and Michigan State round out the top five. To see the rest, head on over to The Sporting News.

He might actually have got to play at UK.
      Good call, Momma Bolden.

Yeah, even though I think Cal would’ve gotten more out of him, they injuries are too much.

I don’t know much about how other teams will look next year, but there’s no way we should be top 3 at the beginning of next season. With that said, I’m even more surprised Duke is rated so high, with everyone they’re losing.

Of course, both our ranking and Duke’s will hinge big time on Bamba’s and Knox’s decisions.

It’s a “Way too Early” poll so why wouldn’t UK….with the #1 recruiting class….not be in the top 3?

Assuming Adebayo and Briscoe join Fox and Monk in the draft, and with Willis and Hawk (and Mulder) graduating, we pretty much only return valuable minutes in Gabriel and Humphries. I don’t doubt our number one class is talented, and I certainly hope and expect to deserve a top ranking as next season progresses, but top 3 at the beginning of the season feels a little optimistic is all.

Cal doesn’t have any top 10 recruits (yet) and almost zero coming back. No way they should even be in the top 20.
