Kentucky Falls to Tennessee 61-59 in Nail-Biter at Rupp Arena

Kentucky had a chance to win a back-and-forth battle with Tennessee, but fell apart in the final minute.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gave UK a lead with 1:25 to play.  They were one stop away from running away with the game, until Tennessee’s Lamonte Turner hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds to play.  John Calipari let the Cats play through the final possession, but it ended with a discombobulated turnover by Gilgeous-Alexander.

The score stayed within seven points for the game’s entirety.  With just under five minutes to play, Tennessee took a four-point lead, the largest lead of the game.   Kentucky responded with a 7-0 run that was capped off by a Kevin Knox And One in transition with 3:18 to play gave the Cats a three-point lead, but Kentucky could not keep the momentum.

It’s the first time Tennessee has swept UK in the regular season since 1999 and it’s the Vols’ first victory at Rupp Arena since Tubby Smith was on the sidelines in 2006.

    Donovan anyone? Yes? No? Maybe?

You can bet your ass he would’ve called a time when Shai was trapped down low with 8 seconds.

    • Stop. Just stop.

Sure thing…Donovan can’t win with superstars. His winning percentage at OKC is 0.60, and since Durant left he’s barely over 0.50.

Sam Cassell and Jayson Williams made All-Star teams, yeah they weren’t durant or westbrook but his record isn’t even close to Donovan’s.

Do you 100% honest to God think Calipari is a better coach and that KY is better off with him at the helm?
We are the winningest program ever, we won’t top UCLA making final fours and getting beat by Bo Ryan and Kevin Ollie. Calipari cannot get it done anymore and the future isn’t looking to bright for him with Duke pulling all the players.

Cal loses to Kevin olliein championship= bad coach
Donavon loses to same Kevin Ollie team in final four= he’s better than Cal

    • runningunnin.454
      10:38 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

Yeah, I do. He’s a HOF coach with 0.82 winning percentage at UK, and 0.78% overall. He’s built three programs, and taken them to the final four.
Donovan’s winning percentage at Florida was 0.71, and the last year his record was 16-17.

    • justaguyinthebackrow
      10:39 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

Right, because Duke is just mowing everyone down every year.Of course UK is better off with Cal; there’s no one better we could even hope to get. Anyone who knows anything about basketball knows this. Cal has played a large part of that winningest program ever title.

    • Kozmo
      10:42 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

If Donovan had these players he’s had the last few years he would have 2+ rings.

Don’t even tell me he wouldn’t have got some of these guys or that Cal would’ve outrecruited him. Look at how much Calipari’s recruiting improved due to the Kentucky effect. Same thing would happen for Donovan. He might not get the exact same teams every year, but I would far and ahead prefer a team with him coaching.

I don’t think the win percentages really prove anything because of the parity between the player quality. Anyway, no one ever talks about win percentages—it comes down to rings and he’s ahead there.

    • Kozmo
      10:44 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

I’m not talking about Duke’s success. I’m talking about Calipari’s lack of it if he doesn’t have an AD, MKG, TJ, and Teague on the roster. That’s what it takes for him to win national championships.

    • runningunnin.454
      11:03 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

Lots of unfounded speculation in the last two comments. No way to know any of that. What I do know is that Donovan told a friend that he was growing weary of the SEC struggle with UK and Calipari…that was in numerous national sports columns…and soon after that, Donovan left for OKC.

    • Kozmo
      11:08 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

I wouldn’t say his last years at Florida were terrible. His next-to-last season they were beat in the elite 8 by UCONN who won it all, but yeah that last year with a losing record is pretty questionable. Probably was ready for a change and exhausted a lot of effort recruiting that team the previous year and focusing on them. He also has been quoted as saying recruiting against Cal was “wearing him down.”

To each their own, if you don’t want Donovan, cool. I do, I believe he is a superior coach to Cal. Superior enough that it would overcome any recruiting deficits.

Do I think he is coming here? No, I don’t think the timing of Cal leaving and him leaving (fired/resign) the NBA will be right. Unless he gets a job in between then an Cal retires and then we get him.

    • runningunnin.454
      11:12 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

I have nothing against Donovan, and he’s a good coach. I do think it takes a special person to coach at UK….just look at all the comments after a loss compared to a win. I would take Donovan over any of the other names I’ve seen.
      Peace.

Yep, they had 3 inbound plays under their basket and should have had 3 dunks. We did nothing to prevent it but luckily they were so bad they threw the pass badly twice, 3rd time Gabriel just grabbed the guy but he made the free throws. But 3 imes they had WIDE OPEN guys going to hoop, that is coaching. Barnes could say just lob it in to tallest guy we got.

100% agree. You can’t use the ‘freshman’ excuse but then fail to help them out in a pressure situation like the team experienced tonight. Cal is an excellent recruiter, outstanding motivator, and strong defensive teacher, but he’s only about a “B+” in-game manager. This loss is on him, like the KU loss [when he was at Memphis] and the Wisconsin defeat.

It’s the level of crticism that falls to the childish level that’s the problem. Every team has off years. This one isn’t really gelling and doesn’t have any leadership, that’s true. But some people act like these players just spit in their face. You people are taking this way too personally. If you call for the ousting of Cal, then you’re either an idiot or a teenager who doesn’t watch any other basketball and only started watching UK in 2009. This isn’t anything like the BCG debacle or the consistently underachieving Tubby years. Cal has a better winning percentage at UK than Pitino did. And we aren’t getting Rupp back, nevermind that’s it’s a different game today. There is no one out there that would do a better job and anyone who thinks otherwise has been spoiled by Cal winning so much since he’s been here.

WTF does that even mean? Getting to the final four isn’t fun? Winning isn’t fun? If it isn’t fun for people, it’s because they have set expectations too high at 40-0 every year and get overly upset when that doesn’t happen. It’s sad when people tie their whole existence to a group of teenagers plating a game. He’d be silly if he did, look at these comment threads. Ready to fire cal after 2 elite 8, 4 ff, 1 runner up, 1 ship. This team isn’t very good, I’ll admit that, but I trust Cal will make the changes in recruiting and win another one. You can go back last year and see the same comments, from the same people. that team lost in the elite 8 to the eventual champion….. on a last second shot. Again I’m not saying this team is as good as last years, just pointing out that some of our fans quit on that elite 8 team.

Sec is just so tough, did you just see that disaster which ESPN tried to call a basketball game, and that was 2 of the better teams in the SEC, well at least 1 of the better teams. Just like I said in November, can’t stand it when a season starts and I know we have ZERO shot at a title, anyone believing me now, come on you bashers, truth hurts.
And Cal will say: this team is just so young, they have to learn to fight, is a process but I like my team, we will get it together for an NIT run, we now have the 1st ever loss to Mizzou and 1st sweep by UT in about 20 years but you blue kool aid drinkers keep drinking what I say. Don’t forget we should have lost to Vandy, they just wanted to lose a little more than we did. SGA in the rare spot of being our Player of the Game, and probably costing us the win all in the same contest……but it’s not like we lost to St. Johns…….Tennessee is a good team, a legit top 20 team……sadly, we are not this year, and likely won’t be between now and March.

This group never quite gelled, and despite Cal’s pleas about their youth and potential, it’s time we understand this is a 10+ loss team that will not be expected to do much in the post season. I really try hard not to knock players. I do. But Diallo is the Ryan Leaf of college basketball. Has all the looks of a superstar, yet none of the intangibles. Sometimes being a super athletic super long player doesn’t amount to being a superstar talent and we’re witnessing it. I personally think he should’ve left when he had the chance. On another note, how does your point guard come away with 0 assists? I don’t know what will help this team or if they’ll ever figure it out this year. I hope they do. I’ll cheer them on no matter what, but things look pretty rough right now. First sweep by UT in almost 20 years… And one other thing, it’s great to have the monetary support from all the long time season ticket holders. But when they’re sitting there like Tuesday night bingo at the senior citizens center…kinda hard for the players to feel supported or energized. I wish we could have open sales to people that really want to be there. Not the season ticket holders that have had the seats for 35 years. But as I said…I’ll continue to support them and hopefully we get this worked out by tourney time!

I could get some of my friends together and beat this UK team. Yes, they have the height, speed, quickness, and vertical advantage. But when it comes to actually playing basketball they are retarded.

Lmao I’m surprised you’re not on this team. You’re fix all the problems! So easy for you to sit behind your computer/phone and talk shit about 18-20 year olds. You wouldn’t have the balls to say any of this to their faces. You’re not a Kentucky fan, please go cheer for another school. Please

Now that’s just ignorance…just because we’re not having a championship season..how many of “these kids'” names do you not remember? How about Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins,Davis, Booker,Ulis, Murray, Lyles, Towns, Noel, Knight, Adebayo, Fox, Monk, Harrison’s, Cauley-Stein, Labissiere, Randle, Kanter, MKG, Miller etc..I can keep going. Don’t try to play that card cause it ain’t winning. Yes were having a tough time, but it’s happened before. Before Cal came along we had a lot of tough times. Stop being spoiled and support your team, if you don’t want to….that’s your choice and the road goes on…

They’re lacking more than 1 pure shooter! We need a Center, Power Forward, Small Forward and a Shooter to go with Alexander.

It will be interesting to see if Cal rights his recruiting ship the coming off season. It’s obvious this year’s woes are due to not having enough top 5 stars players. What he got this year were lower 5 stars, and after seeing them play I really doubt some of them deserved more than 4 stars. If he doesn’t do something dramatic in the off season, I think it will be a sign he has given up and wants to move on.

    • EdC
      9:57 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

Gotta differ on that. It isn’t about stars based on HS players getting those stars by being better athletes. At this level athleticism is important but so is being a shooter, being a basketball player. Cal puts athleticism above all else because that’s what the NBA wants. Go back and look at the teams who have won the NCAA tournament. It isn’t about winning with 5 star athletic freshmen. It is about having a balanced attack, about coaching, having players who can actually shoot. As good as AD and MKG were they NEEDED Miller and other role players.

EdC barbecues with the Caliparis on the weekends, so he knows what Cal is thinking when he recruits and just picks up whomever he wants.

Maybe they are really 4 stars. Who cares? They’re good enough to win with. They obviously had more talent than Missouri, but lost because they didn’t play as well together as a team. This isn’t Cal’s most talented team, but they’re good enough for a good coach to win with.

No back row but I don’t worship Cal above the program like you. Everybody yaps about the great recruiter yet why is it year in year out every team knows that UK struggles in half court offense against zone defense? Hint. It isn’t because he is known for recruiting shooters.

I don’t worship Cal, I’m just not a clueless moron like you. Did you forget Fox and Monk already? Do we really need to go back through the years and name the shooters? Yes, this year they are struggling. But that in no way leads to him not recruiting shooters as a fact. Hint: he doesn’t get everyone he recruits. Hint: (notice the colon, not period) sometimes recruits don’t pan out and score like they did in high school, just like not all great college players translate well to the pros. You guys are putting ridiculous motives and tactics and projecting your ignorance onto Calipari.

lol damn geriatrics… hey another word for them is customers, ones who pay for the spiffy dorm and training facility. It’s a hard balance but we have a great record at Rupp so it clearly isn’t the crowd, they didn’t blow the lead at UT or lay an egg at Mizzou.

Juice I hate to invoke slick Rick but I do remember the Kansas game the year after they smoked us like 150-105 w their starters in til the end and our crowd was terrifying, they totally got an assist on that BUT we had something to scream for: they hustled end to end, and we hate Roy. Give that effort end to end and I bet Rupp responds. We’re all a little older but we can still make noise if we have something to yell about. Agree?

I am so tired of all the negativity I see from some of our fan base. First off Cal has brought 4 final 4 banners to UK and has made it to at least the elite 8 every year but 2. Who else are we going to get to Coach this team that will do better job (and don’t say Donovan he’s not coming). Yeah we’ve dropped more games than I would have liked to see this season BUT, in case you haven’t been paying attention during the Cal era, Cal has his teams playing best come March. Last years team played awful this time around as well and ended the season in what was a Luke Maye miss away from being another Final 4/possible championship. My worry with this group is there really doesn’t seem to be a go to Superstar like past Cal teams, but I think they’ll figure it out and be an Elite 8 squad. My money is by the time SEC tournament roles around, if we play Tennessee again, we roll them!

OUT of the first weekend? If we play the next 3 like we played the last 3 we won’t make it IN the first weekend. I have to believe we will get better – but I would not bet the farm.

15 more turnover’s, absolutely no rhyme or rhythm when the game is on the line…just panic.

These aren’t “kids” anymore Cal, stop making excuses, these guys simply don’t have the basketball IQ (yet) to close out games and play the game properly over 40 minutes. It’s that simple.

    • JCraig
      10:28 pm February 6, 2018 Permalink

Its hard to say completely that this team can’t close a game considering the majority of our games this season seemed to come down to the wire. With that said I’ve also seen us win a few that we borderline tried to give away at the end. Obviously tonight was choke city. I agree they definitely seem to struggle playing the game a full 40 minutes and if we don’t figure out a way to stop these 5 minute scoring droughts we’re toast. And maybe you’re right and come Tourney time we get bounced in the first weekend. If so, look on the bright side, we would almost certainly get the majority of the team back. That should appease the part of the fan base that doesn’t like the 1 and done (not sure if you fall into that group). Regardless I just think its a bit harsh to just completely write off this team and call for Cal’s head. Especially since we’ve seen this before with Cal teams. Look at 2013-14, we lost 9 regular season games and the SEC wasn’t near as strong that year as it is this year.
