Kentucky Falls to LSU 73-71 at the Buzzer

LSU erased an 8-point halftime deficit to defeat Kentucky on a buzzer-beating put-back.

For the second straight game, P.J. Washington missed significant minutes with foul trouble.  Washington picked up his fourth foul with 8:40 to play in a tie game.  Without the Cats’ most consistent offensive weapon in the game, they struggled mightily in the halfcourt.

Once Washington returned to the game, he wasted no time putting points on the board.  He had a quick two, then turned a five-point LSU lead to two with a left-handed And One off the glass with less than two minutes to play.  On the following offensive possession, Washington tied the game at 69 with a right-handed hook.

In the final minute, Tremont Waters missed a step-back to take the lead.  Keldon Johnson’s go-ahead bucket rolled just off the rim.  The offensive rebound slipped out of Reid Travis’ fingers into LSU’s hands.  A pair of Tremont Waters free throws gave LSU a two-point lead.  Herro’s potential game-winning three rimmed out, but Travis corralled the rebound.  With 6.0 left on the clock, Johnson went to the free throw line and knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 71.

LSU’s first game-winning shot attempt fell short, but Bigby-Williams was there to tip in the game-winner.

Why do fans only see the things that go against them and not for them. Did you see EJ put his arm through the net and rim on that last shot. Should have been called defensive interference so actually basket should have counted for the guy that drove in.

Know your rules before you come on here actin like you know more than everyone about basketball. It is only defensive goaltending if the players hand/arm is through the basket WHEN THE BALL IS ON THE RIM OR INSIDE THE CYLINDER! It wasn’t even on the backboard yet when EJ’s hand went through!

No, I did not see anyone put an arm through the net. I only saw the tip in while the ball was in the cylinder. Two wrongs dont make a right. They can review the basket for goaltending, but they cant review the no call (based on what you saw) on EJ.

While they’re reviewing the film, maybe they can review the mugging of PJ. Any of them. See if they coincide with any deposits to Greene’s investment account

It was most definitely offensive basket interference by LSU, straight from 2018-19 Mens NCAA Rulebook (word for word): Basket interference occurs when a player touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or within the basket… According to the same rulebook it was NOT defensive interference by EJ (word for word) Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before it
enters the cylinder; EJ NEVER touched the ball, his hand was long gone by the time the ball got to the rim…

    • mashburnfan1
      10:59 pm February 12, 2019 Permalink

Not goal tending on EJ but basket interference. His hand DOES go through the rim but the interference occurs when he grabbed the rim. You don’t see the grab on the above video, you do on the above rim view, but on this clip you can see the entire goal shaking as ball comes off backboard for the illegal tip in. THAT IS BASKET INTERFERENCE ON EJ. Like slapping the backboard and making it shake. I agree the tip was also interference but so was EJ. I did misspeak responding to the original post as he said it was goal tending. Not a goal tend but is interference. Watch the above rim view and also look at that entire goal shaking from EJ grabbing the rim.

    • ClutchCargo
      11:36 pm February 12, 2019 Permalink

Again, mashburn, you don’t know the rules of basketball. First of all, EJ did not grab the rim. Second, slapping the backboard isn’t basket interference, but it can be a technical if it is done intentionally to interfere with play. You didn’t misspeak, you just don’t know what you’re talking about.

    • mashburnfan1
      9:17 pm February 12, 2019 Permalink

Does not matter if the shot had a chance to go in, it is a rule and is interference. By rule EJ committed basket interference by going through the net and basket to block a shot, plus I believe he grabbed the rim. I did not see it live but did on the replay.

Neither did the fans do anything to prevent Lsu from making a shot. All I am sayin, and you know it, to be who we are, Rupp Arena lower entitled section is lame. Waters just worked Hagans (who is getting worse) all game. Cal shoulda went to quickley or Baker on Waters. The Tennessee game sure did lose its luster now. Wonder why top guys dont wanna play for Cal? Because of 2nd halfs like that. Everytime they have a lead they let the other team outhustle and outplay them in the 2nd. So the refs missed two goaltending calls on the last play…EJ put his arm through the goal and the LSU player touched the ball while it was still over the cylinder. If they make the call on EJ, UK gets ball with time on the clock. Not calling the other ends the game. Sucks

My only problem with the way we played at the end (aside from Herro’s 3 being unnecessarily difficult) is that Travis twice pulled down a big rebound and didn’t try to score. Once he passed out to a shooter and once I think he lost the ball. He was right at the rim both times. I can only assume he was afraid he’d get blocked or that Cal told him to pass it out, because we didn’t need a 3. It just struck me as a bad decision from him each time to not try to score or draw the foul at the rim.

LSU dominates the glass in the second half. They feasted on second chance points because we couldn’t block out. On the other end, they limited us to one shot. Meanwhile, their guards played with much more energy, aggression, and confidence than ours did. They had 8 steals. In short, LSU was just tougher than us tonight. It’s concerning this deep into the season, but we have a chance to redeem ourselves on Saturday. Hopefully we come out with a chip on our shoulder after this pitiful performance and lay the wood to UT.

The offensive meltdowns and stagnation continue to be a problem under Cal now for years and continue to define where the teams end up long-term each season. These are the areas where Cal comes up lacking as a bench coach–when the opponent makes adjustments in the second half and Cal has no answer in terms of a game-plan or adjustments of his own. He gets outcoaches numerous times each year, even in some wins. The bottom line is if this team is unable to get it done offensively, forget about it….this is what its gonna be. Their D is their best O, but ur not gonna shut down good conference teams all 40 mins every game.

We played their game coming out of the locker room and I said “that’ll cost us the game.” My wife thought I was crazy bc we were still up a bucket. They scored 12 in 4 minutes or so. We just can’t run like that, it’s not our game and it makes us pick up dumb fouls (including PJ who otherwise was great) and commit stupid turnovers (EIGHT steals!) Shooting fixes a lot of problems and when we shoot like that we look rough… we gave away 10 points at the freakin stationary, 15 feet from the basket in every arena, FREE throw line. Hope I’m wrong but odds are we drop 2 straight unless we shoot well and that’s not a bet I’d book.

There was no basket interference by EJ as someone keeps mentioning. His hand going up thru the rim and net is perfectly legal because the ball wasn’t on the basket. So no interference. Please learn the rules!!

As far as the basket interference on LSU, yes it was because you can’t touch the ball in the imaginary cylinder above the rim and the LSU player clearly touched the ball in that imaginary cylinder, so refs should have waved it off in real time. Not reviewable is an absolute terrible rule by NCAA.

To respond to anyone talking about EJ’s hand (especially mashburnfan1, since he’s commented on everyone’s post about it), by rule, his was not basket interference because the ball was not in the cylinder when he was, and his hand didn’t affect the ball or the shot. Yes, it looked weird, but it was not basket interference. I’ve read the rules, and it’s pretty clear cut. Jay Williams and Seth Greenberg both said the same.
