Kentucky Falls to Florida 66-64

A bad night just got worse.

Kentucky squandered away a good start by finishing the first half without a field goal in the final six minutes.  Even though they fought back to take a lead with five minutes to play, it all went down the drain to close the game.

The Cats went more than 30 minutes without a made three-pointer.  Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Wenyen Gabriel were the only Wildcats in double figures; each finished with 10 points.

A banked-in three from Kevin Knox with 32.5 remaining and a three from Gabriel with 26.2 on the clock gave the Cats hope, but Kentucky couldn’t get a good scoring opportunity in the final offensive possession.

Tonight had the potential to be an excellent night for the Big Blue Nation.  Instead, everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.

Wow, no comment on the obvious missed calls that should have put UK on the line to tie the game? Even Bilas admitted that a foul should have been called. Complete bullshit.

It’s just great how Cal refuses to run out of bounds plays. Or defend them for that matter. Way to waste your last TO too.

Not being negative but how are we a tournament team? We have no good wins. We just lost at home to an unranked team who shot 33% from the field, 20% from 3, and 64% from the ft line.

It’s called parity…Duke only beat the unranked Gators by three, and they were ranked No.1

I will say I can see Florida as a top 15 team if they get their bigs and I do think TX A&M is one of the top 10 to 15 teams when healthy but unfortunately I get your point. I still think we are a tournament team and don’t see Quade being this terrible the rest of the way. The tough part is Cal’s loyalty, and we have a 2 that can’t really shoot. The chemistry isn’t there. I’d like to see Knox, Vanderbilt, green, and sga starting with either Richards or PJ or whomever else idk. I think that group could develop chemistry. Ok, gonna grab another beer.

Fair question. I just visualize Vanderbilt at the point driving and kicking. I think Knox has more upside as a shooter. However with his defensive lapses maybe throw PJ in his place. Lol. I guess really maybe there isn’t a great solution if the pieces don’t fit. I still think this team has potential. They could also lose the 8/9 game

One of the upcoming NCAA reforms includes allowing you to rip your hand and arm across the head of your opponent. The SEC has implemented this rule this season as a pilot program before being fully implemented next season.

Not sure which team is worse, this team or 2013 NIT team. Can’t wait to hear the Cal freshmen excuses. What’s even better is watching some naive fans swallow that load of garbage.

You will get your wish next year. Gabriel will be back. Sacha will be back. SGA, Green, and possibly one of the other 4 of Knox, Diallo, Washington, or Knox MIGHT be back. So it won’t be all freshmen. Still don’t know if we will be any good, but it won’t be all freshmen.

Here’s some more garbage for you. Last year, we lost by 2 points on a last second shot to the eventual champions….ever hear of a rebuilding year?
And, we’ve been in every game, and have not lost to teams like Wofford, Boston College, NC State, Washington….or Mercer or Lehigh.

Cal and the bball program are on a downward trend. For everyone saying and have said we will be ok I think you can admit we are not ok. Also quit comparing old years to this team. They are worse than those teams. Im not sure if this team does anything right. Cal runs zero offense and its clear a lot of these guys are aloud to do whatever they want. Clearly this team is no better than an 8 seed team. 5 losses already and will easily have 10+. I truly think Cal has gotten way too comfortable with this job and has to do something soon or this is the start of the end for him. Embarrassing night for Kentucky Basletball. Im curious now to see all the excuses now from the true blues.

I think the regular season championship is lost. Now, my hope is we can improve enough to win the conference tourney & make some noise in the NCAA. Florida did not play that well but then we played just a tad worse. To need a foul to potentially tie the game at the end AT HOME is not encouraging to me. Haven’t given up on this team but hoping for some magic at end of season.

We couldn’t stop ball penetration. Haven’t been able to do it all year. I’m sure they’re good kids but we just don’t have the elite guards that Cal has had since he’s been there. They can’t defend. Florida defense was really good. Better than ours. They beat us to loose balls. All. Night. Long.

Can’t let that no call determine what happened the rest of the game.. sure it was a foul but let’s be honest PJ would have missed 1 of the free throws but we’ll never know for sure. But what we should know for sure is that it’s almost February, and this team still makes very questionable passes especially in clutch situations, never use on ball screens correctly, jack up unnecessary 3 Point attempts, and finally… still have no leadership.. so it’s time to accept the fact they haven’t improved much this season and don’t see it coming at all anytime soon, looks to be another NIT year or maybe a 13-16 seed and out in round 1 or 2.. the writing is on the walls as of now..

Tonight’s moment was too big for Kentucky’s youth and inexperience. That said, what makes anyone think they will be able to rise to the occasion in 2 months? Also, whatever happened to the proclaimed “dribble drive offense” that was the stable of Cal’s initial years? Recruiting has declined with Antigua’s departure. Cal needs to start keeping many of the players around for more than one year and put the focus on where it should have been all along….on the front of the jersey.

Valid point about Orlando…I had lost track of him; but, last night watched Illinois v Wisconsin. Saw him sitting on the Illinois bench; surely we could get him back.
Also, we could be Wisconsin…they’re 10-10 and 3-4; now that’s how the mighty have fallen.

Cal’s philosophy is to bring in the elite player who is just better than the guy guarding him. When he has 2-3 of those type players his teams do well. Face it- this team just does not have that type of player! What is concerning is the lack of consistent improvement. Not sure we see the best-of-the-best players in Lexington anytime soon. Hate to say it but Duke is kicking butt on the recruiting front. This team does not have a lottery player and the best thing for the this TEAM is for them to have another college basketball season.

  23. bankerbh

Heard Cal talking about players being selfish. Doing things for just themselves…not the team. Lack of trust. Here’s a novel concept for Cal. Bench them. Oh wait, he can’t otherwise they won’t get enough looks to make championship night. That being draft night. Cal hasn’t cared about the program rather the individual making it to the next level. Why wouldn’t he expect them to be selfish?

    • BBNDan7
      10:54 pm January 20, 2018 Permalink

I don’t blame Cal’s dedication but I start the question the system when we’re being soundly beat for the top guys now, three years running. It seems this only works if you’re really getting the “best of the best.” We’re getting great players, but we’re a clear runners-up to Duke lately.

The worst part is this team isn’t even fun to watch… and it’s late January. If they were clicking for 30 minutes but falling apart for 10, there’d be hope, but it seems more barren than that.

I’m just caring less and less and that’s probably good because I have too much going on in my life to be depressed over five losses this far in the season.

    • Skeps
      11:24 pm January 20, 2018 Permalink

This team is so boring to watch. Throw the ball to the post, turnover. Pass up open 3 to drive to the basket, charge. It’s like watching a BCG team.

    • henderblue
      11:47 pm January 20, 2018 Permalink

It is a little bit much to be getting depressed over 5 losses. On the upside, since we’re not getting the “best of the best” maybe some of them will stick around another year or two. Meanwhile Coach K gonna be on the hotseat with all that talent he has and is getting next year. He’d better start doing a little better than he has been

16 turnovers. Two gamea in a row. 16 chances to score we just threw away. Cut 4-5 off that gives us 2 fewer losses and a lot different season. But these guys don’t understand that. And when one guard shoots 1/8 and the rest are 2/9 from 3 u lose even if ur opponent plays basically 6 guys and shoots under 40%. Just not putting it together and not talented enough to mask the holes.

Aside from Vanderbilt and Gabriel, I would not miss any of these players if they left next year, and I’m only saying that because of their heart, hustle, and want to win. Everyone else is passing time until draft day. I wasn’t this mad with the NIT team. Let’s all just say our prayers tonight that something changes soon.
