Kentucky falls to Auburn 75-70

Well, the worst thing that could have happened just happened. Kentucky was up by 12 with 15 minutes left in the second half, but totally collapsed, letting Auburn surge back into the game and win by 5, 75-50.

Tyler Ulis tried to do it all in the end, putting up 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, oh so close to a triple double. Derek Willis played admirably in the first half, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jamal Murray led scorers with 20 points.

When it was clear Auburn was going to win and storm the court, Calipari sent his starters to the locker room early for their safety. Ulis exited the tunnel with what I’ll call the “Anti-Pitino”:

More coming throughout the evening…

Fouls, poor shooting, no inside presence kills UK. All it took for Auburn were a few lucky shots to go in and they were able to pull it off. After Canty his that BS bank shot I knew it was over. Oh well, Auburn deserved the win with how bad we’ve playing. They needed that win to at least get something to celebrate.

Get used to it….this team is terrible.

    Absolutely zero post presence.
Continuing to settle for the 3.
    No movement on offense.
    Defense is decent at best.

8 losses in conference, 1 weekend exit of the NCAA tournament.

This makes me sick this team has no guts just fold up and quit when times get hard disgrace to the uniform

If Andrew Harrison did a lot of the stuff Jamal Murray does people would have run him out of Lexington last year.

Where would this team be without him??

They tried to his freshman year.

    • cayts23
      6:43 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

@catsarerunnin you are right it would be worse, but I’m just saying Murray leaves a lot of empty possession out there and if Andrew Harrison did that people would have blamed the loss on him. I’m not tired of the freshmen I was just pointing out a simple observation.

    • Bluecreeker
      6:45 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

@catsarunnin – I suggest you look at the offensive inefficiencies of all players. Murray has scored a lot of points, but he has also taken and missed alot of low percentage shots.

      Briscoe isn’t much better.

Ulis had a bad night which was the difference. However Murray jacking up garbage all 2nd half didn’t help.

    • catsarerunnin

So if Cal sits him who do you suggest to take his place??

    • EdC
      6:53 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

You got that right … either Harrison. Murray has no conscience and is way too ready to just throw the 3 toward the basket without a thought of passing it.

    • cayts23
      8:07 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

@carsarerunnin You still don’t get my point. Never said he was the problem but we can all agree if he was a Harrison he would get crushed by a lot of the fans. I agree he needs to shoot when the big guys play bad but you can’t tell me that there are not better options than a contested off balance 3 or drive to basket and get stripped or taking an off balance shot with 15 to go in the shot clock.

Auburn has 8 losses, all but two, to Middle Tenn and Colorado, are by double digits. They are not good, just like Ohio State{lost by 30 today} & LSU are not good. This team is not good and Cal is not a great in game coach. People are always on here bashing Stoops yet Cal seems to get a pass. Unless he just has way more talent than the other team he does not win, and even when having way more talent has won just 1 title, EVER. Not bashing Cal, he does a great job in the community, just stating facts that nobody wants to hear. The last several years college basketball has been way down, few quality teams, especially the SEC. This year he missed on top recruits, Brown, Zimmerman, Swanigan many others up front, so coaching is a key and just like the Nerlens year we see no progress and horrible losses. Don’t think this will be a 1st round NIT loss year but can’t see it being much better. Last year we had more talent than any college team ever, yet had to hang on to beat a well coached Notre Dame team and we know how the next game went.

    • SanDiegoCats
      7:13 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

We don’t treat Cal the same as Stoops because Stoops hasn’t proven himself. Cal has. UK football hasn’t gone to 4 playoffs in 5 years. Yeah Cal missed out on some recruits, but are any of the guys you mentioned doing anything for their team? And with all his recruiting success next year is supposed to be the best. I’ll take Cal over anyone else. No question.

    • justaguyinthebackrow
      7:48 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

You are gleefully bashing Cal, with little merit. Only 1 NC in 6 years with 3 other FF appearances? Whatever shall we do? Fire Cal and replace him with WeareBBN. It’s easy to go 203 and 42, right? Besides KY’s losses, it’s always the team with the most talent that wins the NC every year, right? Next you’ll start whining about how Tubby was so great and mistreated. Go back to the Louisville boards.

Yeah, those tournament wins vs #1 Ohio State and UNC back to back in 2011 were just flukes. And beating an undefeated Wichita State team in ’14 was pure luck.

Its funny though; current and former Div I coaches praise his coaching ability all the time – yet redneck callers to radio shows and anonymous internet commenters seems to disagree….. Fascinating.

Holy Cow…! Seriously… you going to roast cal over four losses. Sure they were to poor teams that had crazy great games… Everyone plays up for the Cats. The truth is we have some holes… ghost players and inconsistent shooting (Briscoe and Lee are painful to watch at the free throw line). But to throw call under the bus like that is true ignorance… I go blue win or lose. Next season you bandwagon supporters will be screaming what a great coach he is… lest we forget four final fours in five years… two championship games and one championship… WE ARE IN JANUARY! These guys are going to turn the corner and get to the sweet sixteen. You haters… just chill…

They did not make shots today. Ulis was off and so was Murray. Why is Marcus Lee playing like a role player? He hasn’t got ANY better. They have to get Skal going some way some how, give him the ball SOMETIMES all this dribble around and hoist up a 3 at the end of the shot clock is NOT working.

Tough loss. Auburn played a whale of a game and we missed some shots that usually fall.
    It’s still early folks.

Really, really proud of the way Willis stepped up. Tyler has so much heart and Jamal got his 20.

Skal is as bad of an inside player as I’ve seen at UK since Mike Scott.. and Cal has nothing but praise for him after every game. Blow smoke much, coach??

IF Skal is as good as Cal says, why isn’t he playing 35 minutes a game?

Finally gave Willis time to get active and be a part of the game. Played great. If Skal can’t play, why don’t we put Humphries in? Hell, use the 5 fouls and try to control the paint. Maybe, just maybe he can get a rebound. Poythress not impressive either. Lee plays good 5 minutes a game on average.

Okay guys, stop with bashing Murray, he IS our offense and has to be out there, those saying he shouldn’t be are morons.

Poythress needs to come off the bench if for no other reason than to see if that will motivate him, regardless …. Willis needs to start and play if for no other reason than we need the offense badly and that’ll make him better.

Marcus Lee has to be there for this team to win. He doesn’t have to score, but rebounding and block shots are things he should always bring, the points would just be a bonus.

    • EdC
      7:43 pm January 16, 2016 Permalink

He should be out there BUT I don’t see how they succeed if he has a shoot first mentality. Tossing the ball in the general direction of the basket as soon as he touches it is not a recipe for success.

I hope now that Cal sees he has to have Willis on the floor. Now we need someone with him on the front line and I believe we all can forget Skal for sure. Alex is the most inconsistent player ever at UK and I think he comes off the bench from now on. So do we go with Lee or do we go deeper into the bench with one of the 2 big freshmen who can give us bulk up front. Lets face it fans the Cats are in for a very long season and no one will be happy with the seeding we end up with. Just not our year and poor recruiting with to many guards and no real post player. Thanks Dakari you missed a hell of an opportunity.

Everyone may not like it be we need to play Skal More. I know he is very green but he will get better if he is playing more. Any way cal turns he is going to take a lot of L’s this year, this is a 10 loss team no matter what way you play it. If we get the right guys on the court and play a defense that the players can execute in the end it will help us be the best team we can be. This team is very slow but Its our inside play that is killing us and we have many other issues, one big one is our on ball defense, another one is cal likes to burn the clock at the end of games, the bad part about that is this team does good to find a good shot on a full clock, We get beat off the dribble left and right and there is no one to protect the rim. I feel we need to go big, here is my line up and play zone defense.

    C Skal/Isaac
    PF Alex/Marcus
    SF Derek/Charles
    SG Jamal/Mychal
PG Tyler/Dominique Isaiah would not get playing time until he learns to shoot FTs
