We should not have lost that game. I’m pissed because we played bad. Why not go to Bam every possible chance after he started going off? Big mistake and lost us the game. Cards better than I thought but we were not good today

Exactly. Instead, stay with Monk no matter that he as a 3 turnover to 1 assist ratio, wasn’t playing defense and had several balls he could have at least gone to the floor for and took A LOT of bad shots. The same old Calipari, fall in love with a player and refuse to recognize when they aren’t playing well.

Because Bam feels like dunking about once every ten minutes. The rest of the time … I don’t know. Mentally reviewing the ending to LOST ? Contemplating the implications of a big enough particle colider to crack the Higgs Boson ?

Outplayed and outcoached. The refs. sucked too but UL deserved the win.

The way Cal stayed with Monk despite all of Monk’s bad decisions was exactly the way he went down sticking with Knight in the UConn game even though half the team was playing better than Knight. Monk is a great player but when a great player isn’t on try something else.

We don’t HAVE to shoot 3s and quick contested shots for one thing. Mulder potentially. He is no worse on D than either of our regular 4s. We could think about working the ball inside especially since it was working. It isn’t like Louisville packed it in. Their defense was extended the entire game. Even Dukie Bilas was talking about how many bad decisions Monk was making. Monk COULD be more of a decoy instead of just green lighting him when he is clearly cold.

I get that it isn’t easy to coach. I do see a pattern where Calipari falls in love with certain players and refuses to accept that great players have bad games. Great coaches change things up when they aren’t going well. If Monk was a great defender or rebounder or went to the floor for some hustle plays or something I could get it but he just didn’t do any of that this game. He just fouled a lot, turned the ball over a lot and missed a lot of shots that often were early in the clock and we don’t have great rebounders who get position to negate that.

Willis is unfortunately is MIA, why Cal won’t play Mulder more I don’t know. He may not be the greatest at D, but he as good as those he replacing and he athletic as hell and can take some of the offensive pressure off Monk.

Another thing, glad Mulder didn’t play in the last 4 minutes. I mean, it’s not like we needed perimeter shooting or anything, no we definitely should’ve stayed with Monk Fox and Briscoe since they shot the ball so well this game.

  17. bankerbh

Briscoe has morphed into a liability on offense. I thought they moved the ball better when he was on the bench. Tired of seeing him go barreling into a group of defenders or go into the air with limited options. Just not a smart player on the offensive side of the court.

Well at least Briscoe hit his FT’s. Everyone is going to have a bad game but damn it, hit the darn FT’s at least! • Mc12
      9:41 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

He gives effort on the glass. If he and Willis could morph together we’d have a decent 4. Problem is Willis essentially makes them a 4 guard lineup with how he plays. So to answer your question, my guess is he plays based on his recruiting ranking lol

    • Bluebros
      9:55 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

Sometimes us UK fans are silly. You do remember that Gabriel is a freshman, right? He is the norm. Not every 18 year old is a freak of nature. He had some great plays, including that one block that led to the fast break bucket. I think Gabriel is going to be just fine. A player that I hope comes back for a 2nd year.

    • Kyblue34
      10:36 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

Gabriel certainly did look like a freshman out there, and that’s okay and understandable. But, if that’s the case, then why not sit him and give more minutes to a guy like Mulder, who looked comfortable and confident out there? It’s just baffling. Cal’s bench coaching was pretty bad tonight.

  20. Mc12
    9:38 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

Awful game. A lot of lack of effort plays on the glass by the guards. Monk needs to try getting to the line when his shot is off. He doesn’t go to the hoop enough. Good to see Mulder at least try to rebound. The team played better when Briscoe picked up his 4th. There are some matchups where Briscoe isn’t effective, which is why he won’t be drafted, but wish him the best. Mulder should get about 15 to 20 minutes a game. Oh, and Bam should have had about 15 attempts.against their stick figures.

  21. henderblue
    9:40 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

Everyone complaining about this player or that player. Bottom line..3 players in double figures. We didn’t play our game. Credit Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinals. And the Louisville crowd. They have a nice team and they were due to win one. I never thought Snyder would control the game. But he did. The freshmen played like freshmen playing their first game in a hostile environment

Who let this ding dong in with all his logical reasoning?! Rick sucks, UL cheats, the refs were paid and Monk’s pregame KFC was food poisoned. Ahhhh, the balance of life. I still wouldn’t trade beating UL in football this year. Let’s hope we see them in April!!

    • EdC
      10:02 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

I’m probably forgetting but I seriously can’t remember Cal EVER changing the plan when shots aren’t falling. I do remember him staying with whichever guard he is in love with at the time. Brags a lot about limiting KAT and Anthony Davis’ shots but never a guard. They get to shoot, shoot and shoot some more even if not rebounding or playing defense.

    • justaguyinthebackrow
      10:08 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

Step in more? Do you think he was just sitting on the bench? Cal can do or say whatever he wants, but at the end of the game he has to play his best players and trust them to do what he says. They weren’t tonight. It’s just 1 lost, not the end of the world.

    • EdC
      11:27 pm December 21, 2016 Permalink

Go look at the post game interview. Cal himself said that he hasn’t enforced discipline and blamed himself for leaving players in even though they weren’t listening. He also said those days are over so yea … step in more and he said he is going to from now on.

3pt loss on road to a rival in Dec. short term hurt / long term gain. Fox & Bam could have given us the game by shooting 50pct from free throw line. UL Defense is good and especially for us on a short break coming back from the Vegas win which was draining on the young guys too.

To all you saying Willis doesn’t rebound — UL outrebounded us tonight, but Derek Willis had more rebounds (9) than anyone on UL’s entire team.

Yes he missed open shots. Yes he missed a key free throw. No he can’t guard a fence post. But please stop with the talk about Willis not playing with effort. He plays with plenty of effort — he’s just not very good. That’s it.

He did rebound better today. I just wish he had instincts on d. He keeps his hands down a lot and gives up easy baskets, but I get it. He is what he is. He’s not a 3. He’s not a 4. He’ll be fine.

UK Big Board is an absolute ignorant DB with limited intelligence. Filters through comments and loves point out “trolls.” We are so much better off for having him on this site. What Kyblue34 said is valid. There were very few offensive sets that went through Bam even though he seemed to have success backing down the defender and dunking the ball (BTW seems to be the extent of Bam’s capabilities). They didn’t play lock down defense and continued to go under the screens and Louisville made them pay. One missing point though – no offensive rebounding.

Put in Milder , His son or someone other than Briscoe who can’t shoot. Shit is inexplicable if you ask me. Calipari gotta stop switching on screens. They gotta go over or under them instead of switching. It’s always a mismatch every time. Its getting to the point I’m starting to question Cal’s coaching ability to make a play or run a play.

Kentucky didn’t do anything tonite other than drive the hoop or shoot a three – because that’s all they have. Bam looks awesome when he jams that ball, don’t he ? Too bad he only wants to do it about five times a game.

Go back and watch it again. How many times did UK come down with the ball … and just have a guy on either block just stand there and watch to see what a guard does next ?

Briscoe was just doing the only thing they know how to do … when the outside shots ain’t falling.

Cal told Monk to get the ball to Bam. He didn’t and decided to jack up dumb shots. If you want to blame people, blame Fox for playing the laziest defense on the team tonight. Blame Monk for that horrible series where he throw that lazy pass to Bam that was stolen. Then Fox gets the turnover, gives it back to Monk who passes to the wide open shooter, oh, wait, he just drove on 3 dudes and tossed it in the air. Blame Briscoe for fouling 3-4 jump shots. Also blame Monk for not doing anything else when his shot wasn’t falling. Didn’t look for teammates, didn’t rebound, didn’t defend all that great.

PS–Like the poster saying Willis didn’t rebound when he was tied for the most rebounds on the team tonight. Look at box scores, folks.

#25 it’s not God’s fault. I’d be careful about blaming Him

Chalking it up to a bad shooting night. Sucks we lost to Loserville, but I have faith in this team and Cal

Did Cal flip off the Louisville crowd?

Can someone answer this? Maybe I am paranoid? Why do the rims at the Yum center seem so tight. The sound the rims made me nervous from the start. Shooting on these type of rims seems intimidating.

Boy, them “Skrip Clubs” gonna be popping with dollar bills tonight in Louisville City! Congrats to the dirty birds and their dirty dolla bills. It was a pretty good game and I hope we get another shot at them in April. Merry Christmas BBN!!!

as a louisville fan, it’s a good feeling to FINALLY get a win in this dang series because god it’s so lopsided. any louisville fan in their right mind wouldnt even talk smack about it because of that reason alone. honestly i don’t even like watching this annual game because it makes me feel sick to my stomach but this one was pretty fun to watch. didn’t seem like their was a lot of anger or bad attitude on the court aside from whatever the hell mangok was doing right before halftime because he’s kind of an idiot sometimes.

I disagree buddy, hope we see you in March. We played at 45% capacity tonight, and you won by 3. Good luck with that. Hope to see you in March.

Okay, now here is what I’m going to say after I have somewhat calmed down. We lost. It hurts. It’s tough. Yes, it ruined my Christmas vacation most likely. But if you look at the circumstances. There were some rediculously bad calls. Yes there was some headsheadscrating shots being taken. Yes there were a few coaching errors. But do I think in the long run we are a better team? Yes! Do i think we are the better team right now 9/10 times. Easily! Quit singling out one player for us losing. Because it wasnt. It came down to free throws, an off shooting night, and the schedule leading up to this game. Loserville one, plain and simple. Did they earn every bit of it? No. We lost the game more than they won it. But, we’ll get it together before March.

First off let me say this was not a bad loss!! To go on the road on short rest and play against a top 10 team, shoot very poorly from FT line and the 3 point line and still only lose by 3… is pretty darn good.

Having said that… this team reminds me of the 2009 John wall team… when they can shoot a decent percentage from the outside, they are impossible to beat, HOWEVER, once they go cold from the outside (like the NCAA WV game for the 2009 team) like we did tonight, then its anyones game.

few other observations: Bam will become a force by the end of the season, Briscoe is just a very poor shooter (aside from driving to the basket, Cal should not let him anything including short range jumpers), Fox is awesome and will only get better, Monk plays like a typical NBA player (good offense and lackluster defense), Willis simply has no confidence ( the guy will never leave up to his potential), the X factor will be Gabriel….

This team will either win the championship or fizzle out in the round of 8 or sweet 16…. we’ll see

UK offense and defense looked like AAU ball. Louisville offense used several screens, pick and rolls, back cuts, and several players were moving without the ball. The better team won. UK will he better by March.
