Kentucky embarrassed by Duke in Champions Classic

(Photo: Brian Spurlock/USA Today)

(Photo: Brian Spurlock/USA Today)

Kentucky looked absolutely terrible in its season-opening loss to Duke in the Champions Classic. The Cats were manhandled by the Blue Devils for 40 minutes, on both sides of the court, until the final score of 118-84.

It was an unimaginable loss for college basketball’s second-ranked team, especially after how well we saw them play in the Bahamas. We were led to believe this is a special group, but Tuesday night’s game was anything but special. It was an abomination, and the worst loss of the John Calipari era of UK basketball.

Looking back at what went wrong, defense is to blame. Offense is to blame too. Duke being really, really good is also to blame. The only positive thing to say about the loss is Reid Travis and Keldon Johnson came to play. Everyone else could’ve done much, much more.

Here’s the box score, if you can stomach it:

Will be lucky to make the tournament this year with how tough our schedule is and how bad we are as a team. Worst coaching job since the days of Billy G.

Coach Cal blew this game I don’t put this on the players, this is all coaching 34 pt lost on national TV smh

You take all the confidence away from quade & Nick by not starting them like you did in the Bahamas SMH then the substitution patterns was stupid, coach Cal was absolutely terrible tonight especially starting Hagan’s what a great move coach SMH
Why not start your most experience guys & I loved quickly in the Bahamas 18 & only 1 or 2 turnovers, I’ve been said this if Brad Stevens was at Kentucky we would have 5 championships but Cal has only got 1 thank God for AD, Cal almost let that slip away, other than that coach Cal is great recruiter but X & O’s, I don’t know hopefully I change my tune & he wins this because I love Cal but this performance tonight is very disrespectful & I’m blaming him coach Cal…..

Tough schedule? SEC? UF just got pasted by a very average FSU team. Auburn will be good, LSU better than last year, Bama and Mizzou down. UF is young and not good, Vandy is well Vandy, USC not good, UGA not good. Our weak conf and weak schedule is what will save us.

A lot of work to do and a lot of coaching as well. If we don’t hustle, play defense, move the ball around, and stop forcing shots it’ll be a long season. You can say “freshman” all you want but fact is we were beaten by freshman who did all of the things mentioned above. Another thing I don’t understand is Zion has 2 fouls in first half and was back in the game with 6-7 min to go…why do you not go at him? Were the teams in the Bahamas that bad or have we regressed a ton? Hard to tell at this point. If we come out Friday and only win by 15-20 it’ll say a lot.

  10. AndTheDevil

What a horrible display of whatever Kentucky thought it was playing. Tonight was a display of what happens when one team plays modern basketball and the other plays a style that peaked in the 90s. Cal would have forced Zion to only to post up. Can’t blame a kid for picking them.

We run no pick and rolls or pick and pops. I mean we should be pick and rolling Herro/Reid. Instead it’s pass and shoot or dribble the air out.

The dribble drive offense is dated and useless in modern basketball.

    • unbridled

I thought the dribble drive looked pretty good..on Duke. They got two guys who can put it on the floor and get to the bucket any time they want. That’s the difference between this Duke team and their past few teams. They’ve lived and died on 3 pointers on the past. This year they have the two best dribble drive players in college basketball. Plus shooters. We were after these guys hard and didn’t get them. Duffel bag??? We may never know, but right now K is playing Kentucky style ball with the players we wanted and didn’t get. If those guys stay healthy they won’t get beat. Let’s say they don’t get any better by March and we improve by a lot, which I think we will..we still have serious match up problems with their big 3. We’re gonna have a decent season and we’ll get better, but they are the team to beat, unfortunately.

    • mashburnfan1
      1:03 am November 7, 2018 Permalink

I’ll point it out. Our guys had no clue how to play D, no rotation and not stopping ball {that is coaching}. On offense we are very bland, no inbounds plays {thats coaching}. Look at the FR for dUKe tonight vs our guys and tell me which players were more prepared to play {thats coaching}. Even their 11th-12th players schooled the #1 center recruit from a year ago, a guy that has had over a year of Cals {and I say this while laughing} teaching and developing. K is 10 times the coach Cal is, maybe more.

So OBVIOUS to see! Tonight we all saw what a team of freshman All-Americans can accomplish when they are coached… well coached! This I do know… Coach K isn’t in front of the media proclaiming “these are young 18 year olds who don’t listen… who won’t do what a tell them to do. It’s about youth”….

Never thought I would see a Kentucky loss worse than the UK-Kansas debacle in Pitino’s first year. This ranks way above that in ‘hard to take’ cause at least then, we had a limited roster. This is an embarrassment beyond belief. No guts, no hustle, no coaching, no nothing. NIT, maybe! They will lose 10+ games this year. Pitiful for a bunch of guys that call themselves dawgs. This may be the single worst loss I have witnessed in decades. To be surrounded by such hype, national TV audience, NBA scouts, high expectations, #2 ranking, Duke as your opponent, and all the other hoopla surrounding this team prior to tip off you would think we would get a defensible effort……but no. This team allowed Duke to punk them unmercifully on the biggest possible stage……that’s something that just doesn’t happen. An embarrassing loss, and one that was predictable if you consider how poorly they played in their exhibition games last week. If there were any 5 star recruits on the fence, I shudder to think what impression this made on them.

Terrible perimeter defense and so many live-ball turnovers based on stupid, lazy passes.

You guys cant be serious can you? We didn’t play great but that beating was about how nasty the duke freshman were. I mean Zion is a freak of nature. The kid is 6’7,280,and has a 40-something inch vertical. He is bigger, stronger, and jumps higher than almost any player on our team not to mention he’s skilled. He was practically unguadable for us. We’ll never see a team like that again. Unless its them in the tournament and the only way we’ll beat them is by drawing the foul. Travis learned that quickly. This team is going to be fine and you’re going to see duke do that to alot more teams.

UK and Cal still play the same bully ball, force/drive to basket and try to get fouled. Same lack of outside shooting, and same man to man defense. Duke truly played positionless basketball, with 4 fantastic athletes. Fluid, perimeter oriented but yet attacking. Duke looked like GSW, we lost led like calipari coached Kentucky. Calipari coaches “ugly” basketball, read any article on this site about any game and the words “ugly” are always written. I’m not saying duke goes 40-0, but I can say this UK team, on their very best night, is 20 worse than them.

Williamson will spend a certain amount of time injured. That big might be able to be that explosive but that’s a lot of force crashing onto hardwood hundreds of time per night. Now that Duke’s on tape, every coach on their schedule is figuring out how to stop them. John Robic will break all of those tapes down and figure out how to beat them in April – after the Cats come together and start playing team ball.

Duke could seriously be the team to go 40-0 this year. No trouble at all giving them credit for their play. With that said, that was about as disgusting of a display by a UK team that I have ever seen. They got their hearts ripped out of their chest with fifteen minutes left to play in the first half. I’m not sure how this team even can recover from that. Number two in the country my ass! The lack of intensity and willingness to hustle is inexcusable and has a lot to do with coaching. I knew Duke was going to be the more disciplined Team going into this…I did not however equate that to one of the most miserable games I’ve ever watched in all my 32 years as a Kentucky fan. I wasn’t buying into the hype, and it’s not just our Football team’s exciting year they’ve had that’s dampening my feelings about the Basketball team. There’s just something “off” about this group. Yes, Duke was really good and was hitting nearly everything they threw up. Does that still mean that we should get embarrassed by as much as we did with the eyes of the entire Country watching us? In my opinion, no it shouldn’t. I really don’t know what else to say, most of you guys have already took the words right out my mouth. If things don’t improve, this is going to be one long, ridiculously underachieving year. You don’t know how much it hurts for me to post this.

What y’all don’t realize is this. This was Duke playing at 90%. UK was playing at 60%. It was one game. First game of the year. My team? They don’t have much talent and when they play at 90% they can’t compete with most top 10 teams at all. Just relax. After January UK will be better like usual and ready to play. You caught Duke on their best night and you at your not so best.

Time to sit back and watch the blue devils OWN the nation for the next 4-5 months. Gonna be a long season for Cal and the kittens.

Everyone’s like, It’s the first game of the season. Yeah, it was also Duke’s first game of the season. Next excuse.

No one wanted to see this happen, but it did. Everyone’s character is being tested tonight. How everyone responds, including players, coaches, the administration, and fans, will tell the story going forward. I vote to take the high road and move ahead. Congratulate Duke on a great game, as hard as that is to swallow, and hope the players and coaches use this as motivation going forward. If it were me, I would be back in the gym doing whatever I could to get better and be looking forward to a rematch in the ncaa.

Listen folks… Duke isn’t 34 points better than us, we simlply didn’t match their intensity and aggression. It’s a mental issue rather than a talent issue. Yes duke was better tonight because they we’re better prepared, and they attacked all night. I know this will get our team going and I think Cal trimmed his rotation after tonight to 7 main guys. Herro, Hagans, Green, Johnson, Washington, Travis, & Montgomery. Then play Richards & quickly for spot minutes. Again, I know it feels and looks bad right now but it’s not by any means Duke is that much better from what I seen. I seen a UK team come out got punched and we’re spectators. That will change after tonight and the rest of the season. I think a loss in the Bahamas would have helped and it would have maybe changed tonight’s out come.. go Cats!!

Correct. They’re probably closer to 50 points better than us. Don’t forget K told his team to slow down and started subbing with 7 minutes left. It could have been much worse. Will this team get better? Yeah, but so will Duke.

So you watched a team that can’t shoot, can’t defend, can’t pass, and does not run a single set play, and seriously think Duke is not 34 points better? If duke wanted to score 130, they could have. 59 Points are most EVER given up by Calipari teams in one half. Duke scored 59 in both half’s, and called off the dogs with 8minutes to go in 2nd half

I am so sick of having to scroll through 500 of your stupid click bait shit ads and teasers.

Now that I’ve said that, the fact is these guys looked lifeless and like they could care less in the exhibition games and it showed again tonight. To much believing the hype.

They’ll get better, they can’t get any worse. Maybe it turns out to be a valuable lesson. It’s up to the players and the staff.

Duke is loaded…everyone knew that coming in to the game. We obviously weren’t prepared to play but it would have been a similar result if Duke played Mich St or Kansas. We didn’t hit shots which I’ll blame that on early season nerves. What concerns me most is lack of ball movement, fast break points, and defense. I’ve never been a huge fan of the dribble drive. In my eyes it works well IF you have superior athletes. We got to the basket but couldn’t finish. It’s early and there’s a long season ahead. I have full confidence that we’ll have a good tournament run in March. But if Duke plays like this the rest of the year….I’m not sure it’ll matter what any other team does this season. I knew they were too loaded but did not expect the role players to play that well.

I’m really irritated with some of the UK fans right now. Granted, this may be the most disappointing regular season loss in Kentucky history, but it is just a November loss. We are Kentucky. We play for March. This team can still bring a banner. It is beyond stupid to give up on them.

God awful display tonight. The only solace I take from this game is 2015. We were clearly the best team yet dUKe won it all. Let’s hope we steal one this year.

There was absolutely no effort from the coach or players tonight. I can handle a loss. But this was just sad and pathetic. Duke couldn’t miss a damn 3 pointer. But UK s defense was just awful.

The Cats will get better and be there at the end of the season. The way Duke played, they would have done that to any college team they played tonight. Better to have this game to start the season so we can see what areas we need to improve on. It’s a long season.

I see a bunch of horses being stolen and rode off the bridge in Louisville here pretty soon according to some of these comments. Get a grip guys. Duke played as well as they could play. We’ll get better, maybe not good enough to beat Duke, but we’ll have a good season. Unfortunately, Duke is the team to beat this year. Those 3 guys we wanted them bad but didn’t get em. Now K is playing dribble drive ball with them and beating us at our own game.

Embarrassing is understatement. This is not a good start. This team should have been better prepared. We in for a rough season. Recruits just saw why they should choose Duke, or any other school. Wiseman to Memphis, Carey to Duke, Hurt to Kansas…that was an ass beating. Only thing you can hope is these kids become motivated by it and Duke gets knocked out in tourney but Duke looks ready this year.

We played awful looked like kids among men. Pukes Big 3 are not only college ready they would do damage in the NBA. They played great and we didn’t and they aren’t 30 points better then us but last night they were. Let’s see how they respond to getting throttled the rest of the season. Puke would beat anyone last night playing that way and will have to play poorly to lose a game. They won’t lose many and are #1 we are top 20 maybe.
