Kentucky drops an embarrassing one in Knoxville

USATSI_9835421_154849602_lowres

Well, that sucked. Despite having De’Aaron Fox, Kentucky looked completely out of sorts tonight and Tennessee made them pay, the Volunteers winning by a final score of 82-80. On a night that Villanova and Kansas also lost, Kentucky picked up its third loss on the year, and this one hurts.

Malik Monk led scoring with 25, followed by Bam Adebayo with 21 points and De’Aaron Fox with 17. For the third game in a row, Isaiah Briscoe looked off, although he had 14 rebounds; for the second year in a row, Kentucky loses in Knoxville.

More coming throughout the night…

I wouldn’t have had an quibble with their fans chanting over rated. When you don’t play as a team and don’t play with passion you deserve the loss and Tennessee deserves the win.

And when you’re not prepared, you don’t play with passion, and you don’t play as a team, does the majority of the blame fall back on the coach? I would certainly think so.

Three straight awful offensive performances by Briscoe, dude’s starting to look like a headcase. Also Monk is great, but if you’re clearly having an off game then maybe taking 13 threes is a bad idea. This team really hasn’t been looking very good as of late and going into the Kansas game there isn’t much of a reason to have confidence that we will win that game.

Agree. Briscoe has spent a lot more time mouthing than playing over the last several games. He played terribly in this game until about the last 8 – 10 minutes when he got most of his rebounds. Looks like a team going the wrong direction to me since A&M basically.

Dude- stop sugarcoating Briscoe’s last 2 games. Something is clearly in his head. He’s a much better player than he’s been showing. There’s nothing wrong with saying so.

Props to Briscoe for rebounds and assists. He should have added 8-12 to his point total. He played far below his ability on the offensive side tonight. Really not even debatable.

This team needs to learn how to play defense quick. Not to mention the other glaring problems. No one on this team makes his other teammates better. And we have too many dudes who’d rather shoot until they hit than pass to an open shooter.

Totally squandered a major opportunity to solidify a 1 seed with Nova & KU losing tonight. On the bright side as long as they beat KU on Saturday they won’t drop too far because those other teams also lost. Still- this should have been a springboard into February, it’s a huge step backwards. Briscoe needs a psychiatrist.

No direction from the guard area. Neither Fox nor Briscoe seem to grasp situational basketball and where we need to get the ball to be successful. Settle way to often for an average to poor shot way too early in the clock. No one could stop Bam….we just don’t try very hard to go through him..because sometimes it is hard.

Briscoe has seemed lost the last 3 games although late he showed some promise. Need him to get it together.

Defensively we are a hot mess. Not sure what we can do to hide Fox but he is awful on defense. But there are quite a few in that line :).

I think we can kiss a 1 seed goodbye; this is a seed-killing loss to a bad team. I honestly think KU may beat us by 20 in rupp unless Monk is on fire; fox wasnt healthy tonight, i could tell he was a bit slower than usual. This team MUST realize that feeding bam is our best bet–he had 4 shots in the first half; monk had more missed threes than that: selfish and immature.

Monk had 25 and left 30 on the table. Another potential 15 in turnovers… player efficiency is poor at best. Kobe scored 30 a game too when he had the green light. 5 less 3 point attempts and convert those to passes to Bam and we not only get them in foul trouble, but we easily win the game.

4 pts from the bench; all from Willis. Cal needs to shut up about the ball not getting to Bam. I believe he said he has ways to make sure that happens, like benching guys, but he didn’t. Let’s coach! I’d be fine with a loss if I saw ‘Nique and Hump battling and the ball getting to our big man. Step-back threes and showtime dunks aren’t the answer. And those taking up for Briscoe, please! Dude was flat out awful first half. There were a few questionable calls like Wenyen’s tip-in that was called over the back. That started a six-point swing. And balls that went out of bounds after touching UT. Just a gross game all the way around.

    11:49 pm January 24, 2017 Permalink

SERIOUSLY? How did Briscoe look off? 11pts, 15 rebounds, 5 assists?

Monk missed 10 3’s and had 5 turnovers

Willis and Gabriel were a non factor

Neither monk or fox could get it to Bam who was again unstoppable.

At least Briscoe’s assists were to Bam

Not sure why everyone is so hard on that Briscoe. He battles. One of the best defensive players we have and he rebounds. Without him we would give up 100 pts a game

I’m not too terribly upset at this loss because it’s early and it will be a learning experience, but let’s lay blame where it’s deserved. And quit using Briscoe as an excuse. That dude is our heartbeat.

    • JusSayin
      12:14 am January 25, 2017 Permalink

He will always be the scapegoat. It’s not fair but once UK fans make up their mind about stuff like that they rarely change it.

    • chris43
      3:21 am January 25, 2017 Permalink

Briscoe is our heartbeat? Seriously?!? Yeah I’ll give it to ya….dude can drive on anybody! But if he can’t out muscle them he can’t finish because he can’t jump that well! So you end up seeing a lot of drives and once he realizes “oh shit! We aren’t playing EKU and one of their quality bigs knocks it back out to half court….he either stops driving OR drives to the basket with ZERO idea of what he’ll do once he gets there!
WILLIS-the big KENTUCKY “white boy”….yup! We have one yearly and you guys know it whether you’ll admit it or not. He was playing really good before his ankle injury last year but hasn’t looked the same since. He’s had a few good games this year but been pretty bad/average in the rest. Fact is that he’s a below average defender therefore if he isn’t hitting 3’s…he has no business being out there.
Monk- is a BEAST! In my opinion they do t get him the ball enough and he ends up taking random shots here and there. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. If not for Monk…..North Carolina beats us!
if you notice Fox and Briscoe are “ball dominant” and Monk will tend to fade due to this. I wish we’d run more of a Fox/Monk “1-2 ball dominant offense” with Briscoe as the 3rd. Bam should be option ONE with Fox/Monk options 2a and 2B on offense.

Since Cal has been here we get beat on the end line in bounds a lot. We were smoked on it again twice at critical times late in the game. TN got layups on it.

True we are very bad on defense but you also have to remember we are not a super deep team. I’m not a Cal. Basher I think he’s a great coach with one weakness. His unwillingness to play zone in certain situations. When a team spreads the floor and you see that you’re man to man is breaking down over and over he has to learn to swallow his stubborn pride and play zone.

I don’t blame Cal for being out coached. It’s his recruiting philosophy. He (and we) will live and die by the one and done system that we have in place. If Cal had all his players for 2-3 years, a new area would be build in Cal’s name. It is what it is… These young men have a ton of talent and they just scratch the surface at Kentucky THEN it’s off of to the next batch of soon to be NBA players.

It’s entertaining and it works half of the time. Games like tonight are just a reminder that kids play for themselves and not the team. I don’t blame them. It’s the system that they were dealt. Cal’s job is to somehow bring them all together in 5 months to be the best team in the land, year after year. If that’s overrated then I want what you’re smoking.

Now watch, Kentucky gonna whup some arse on Saturday! Briscoe gonna make them pay for last year’s OT game. And please… GIVE THE BALL TO BAM!!

They realized the mistake and gave them 2 points but took 4 off of our score (making it 16-20). I paid attention the entire game and never noticed them correct it. I don’t understand why we don’t play zone some? Switch it up! Go man and then back to zone and then randomly press a bit! Attempt to confuse and rattle them a bit! The more I watch this team it seems that teams spread us out, move the ball some, and drive to the basket. There is very little or no help defense. If there is help defense it seems to be late and results in a foul.

If this is “Briscoe’s Team” we won’t get to Round 2. Yea, I get it he had a bunch of rebounds, etc, but he makes unbelievable poor decisions that, interrupt the flow, lead to a turnover, or like these stupid drive and prayer shots that he MIGHT make 10-20% of the time. The rest are either smacked back or damage the rim….
