Kentucky Deputy Athletic Director DeWayne Peevy has been named Adidas’ 2018 NEXT UP honoree.
The award is given to an up-and-coming name in the world of college sports, whose selflessness and dedication to forward progress stands out among his peers.
“I challenge my peers to share their opinion. I feel like it’s my part to motivate others, to share, and understand their opinion matters,” Peevy told the College AD after winning the award.
Peevy arrived at UK in 2008, where he started as the Associate AD and worked his way up the totem pole from there. He became the Senior Associate AD for Communications in 2010, and then the Deputy AD in 2013. Now, he helps with the day-to-day operations of UK’s athletic programs.
John Calipari says he has never been more comfortable with an associate at a school than he is with Peevy.
“I would say he’s one of the brightest I’ve been around. I trust him. As a matter of fact, he’s the only person I’ve given my schedule to,” said Calipari. “He oversees my schedule. I’ve never had that outside my office, in all my years of coaching. With him, though, I felt really comfortable.”
Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart says he Peevy has been durable and dependable in his time at UK, two key traits that allow this program to function as well as it does year after year.
“His ability to communicate with people and bring them together has been very, very helpful to me,” Barnhart said. “I always tell people that toughness is about being durable and dependable and he is both of those; and then, understanding the greater good this program has for our state.”
“Measuring how tall you’ve helped the people around you stand is a selfless and honorable way to measure success,” the College AD wrote in the official release. “We are proud to count DeWayne Peevy as one of our NEXT UP honorees.”
