Now that’s more like it.  After a choppy first half (but a decent start!), the Cats cruised past Texas A&M with a final score of 68-51.  Alex Poythress led the way with a season high 16 points and five rebounds, looking every bit the player Cal has raved about recently.  James Young had 15 points, followed by Julius Randle with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

While Alex’s play is the story of the game, another major storyline is the disappearance of Willie Cauley-Stein.  For the third game in a row, Willie looked listless and completely out of it, scoring only one point and grabbing one rebound.  I’m sure Cal will be asked about that tonight.

For now, let’s all revel in Alex’s big night.  Do the Cal hop!

You chose the wrong angle for that gif. The other angle shows he turned the ball from a layup to a dunk and it was glorious. Good try otherwise.

i think they chose that angle because it showed Cal in the back ground. Actually I know they did cause I actually read it. Goodtry on the comment otherwise.

The other angle was by far better. More impressive.

really would like to see the original angle at real-time speed. That made me jump out of my seat. This gif did not.

I would guess “personal matters” are WCS’s problem. Guy looks depressed, completely somewhere else. Maybe girlfriend?

If Poythress can give us those numbers we are at a different level. I don’t think wcs likes basketball or cares about it. Everyone is telling him he’s 7 ft. and athletic so it’s what he’s supposed to do. I think he’d rather be doing something else.

Great job stepping up Alex! UK’s offense works so much better with Alex in instead of WCS. Alex and Johnson should start getting a lot of those old WCS minutes.

You may have something there Real Cracka, maybe Willie not enjoying basketball, if that’s the case theres nothing wrong with that, hope he finds what he wants to do. Good game Cats

If Willie is bored with basketball, I bet the football team could use him as a wide receiver? Could you imagine our QB’s having a 7-foot target who runs like a deer?

Glad we won, but getting impatient with this team lollygagging around until late in the second half before they put these teams away, especially at Rupp. At times we look like we are completely mailing it in when it comes to defending around the rim. Did like the way Dakari, Alex, and Andrew played, however.

And one thing about Cal that has always griped me – why won’t he put in the bench warmers when we are blowing a team out by 20+ points at home and there is 3 or 4 minutes left in the game? What possible harm could it cause to put in Derek Willis, Marcus Lee, Polson, Hawkins, etc.? Our starters were pissing the lead away anyway just passing the ball around with no intent to score. I just can’t figure that one out about Cal. One day it is going to bite him hard when a starter gets injured at the end of a game. Wait – didn’t that happen in 2011 in the SEC tourney when Liggins and Lamb both sprained their ankles in the final minutes? You would think Cal would have learned from that one.

Oh well, glad we won anyway.

We beat a 3 and 1sec team by 17. Hawkins didn’t play well Polson played okay but have up some drives as you would expect. I think everybody except Derek Willis is getting the appropriate amount of minutes. But who does Willis cine in for? Poythress? Dakari?

I don’t think Cal is worried about making sure everybody plays. This isn’t rec league basketball and I for one would much rather have the young guys who will be playing finishing the games so they learn HOW to finish games.

Even more disappointing is that when WCS was given the chance at the end of the game to try and get a field goal he turned it over on consecutive possessions. There are no more Cleveland State’s or Robert Morris’s where he can pad his stats and this is closer to what we will see from him come Feb and March. Hard to consider him a first round pick in the draft.

When that happened I felt so bad and embarrassed for him. Plus he had back to back fouls called on him late in the game too right? Hard to get going when he gets called for things like that and gets in his head not to mess up. He’s completely out of it. I think maybe his GF broke up with him bc he hasn’t played well since Arkansas game.

I saw Coach Cal jump at least 12 inches on another lob to the basket play that was nullified by a foul during the second half. I just wish the UK ballplayers could see Coach Cal’s enthusiasm on the sidelines and feel that Micheal Jordan energy he has and transport it to the talent he has on the floor..

I’m beginning to realize that this team simply doesn’t “get it.” Halfway through the season and they simply can’t play a complete game, period.

Alex was tremendous and Randle was his usual excellent self but A&M scored in the paint at will it seemed and missed a boatload of close in shots (anytime the interior defense wants to show back up is fine with me). As far as the zone offense? What zone offense? (unless you consider rotating the ball around the perimeter and jacking up three’s an offense.) Instead of looking inside as the first, second and third option these guys right away start bombing from the outside (which is great if you can actually make them)

These “freshmen” are no longer freshmen; they are halfway through the year. Time to grow up and start playing the game the way it’s supposed to be played.

As a final aside, the game again was brutal to watch, no flow at all thanks to officials blowing their whistles at every opportunity. Game is becoming unwatchable.

I know beating a 3 and 1 Conference opponent by 17 on an off shooting night. Real disappointment.

Totally agree with Mark and jus sayin…and I think many others are saying the same thing. How many layups did we see by A&M last night????????? Nobody challenging guys driving to the rim…passing the ball for 15-20 seconds outside trying to solve the zone…and then sometimes recklessly driving to the goal hoping for a foul…What??? Let’s go back and see how UL consistently beats the best zone in America (Syracuse)………..we will not shoot our way out of it for six games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
