Kentucky back out of the AP Top 25

For only the third time in the John Calipari era, Kentucky will begin the postseason unranked. The Cats’ loss at Florida was enough to get them tossed out of the AP Top 25 once again.

Kentucky received 66 votes, putting them in 27th. Florida is back in at No. 23, while Tennessee and Auburn come in at No. 13 and No. 16 respectively.

And is that surprising? They didn’t play like a top 25 team…

I think if this same UK team played in this same league 3 years ago, they would have had room to get together quicker, at least in my opinion. I think UK is better than most people think Nationally. We have the talent & we know they can put together 4 wins in a row against 4 straight tourney teams. Take it as you will but I remain glass half-full! Go Cats!!

They are 17th in the RPI. Kansas just got blasted by OSU and they are still in the top 10. UNC barely fell after getting swept. Rhode Island lost by 30. UK should definitely be ranked ahead of them.

It’s the SEC folks! The league as a whole was preseason ranked in 40’s & 50’s besides a few teams. That being said, most teams had huge preseason wins which vaulted certain teams up. Along with that, the SEC beat up on each other therefore not allowing the “league as a whole” to move up in the rankings; at least in my opinion. However, I would bet big on the SEC having at least 3 teams in the Sweet 16. Go Cats!!

The SEC was a good if not the best conference when it comes to amount of teams being close to top 25 talent. The problem with the SEC this year was no clear cut elite top 10 team. UK has played easily Sweet 16 teams if not Elite 8 Final Four Caliber opponents.

“For only the third time in the John Calipari era, Kentucky will begin the postseason unranked”…I’m not sure “only” is appropriate in this case but I could be wrong.

Nonetheless, the good news in the tournament (mostly) is we won’t have SEC officials.

    Fun facts:

Number of seasons finishing regular season in top ten of AP rankings:
    Pitino – 7 of 8 (88%) 75% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking (net overachievement: +13%). Avg final ranking** – #7
    Rupp – 18 of 23 (78%) 88% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking (net underachievement: -10%)* Avg final ranking** – #9
    Smith – 6 of 10 (60%) 80% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking (net underachievement: -20%). Avg final ranking** – #12
    Calipari – 5 of 9 (55%) 89% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking (net underachievement: -34%). Avg final ranking** – #12
    Sutton – 2 of 4 (50%) 25% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking (net overachievement: 25%). Avg final ranking** – #15
    Hall – 6 of 13 (46%) 60% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking (net underachievement: -14%). Avg final ranking** – #13
    Gillispie – 0 of 2 (0%) 0% of teams had top 10 pre-season ranking. Avg final ranking** – #26

    * AP only had rankings in Rupp’s final 23 seasons and only published pre-season rankings in Rupp’s final 8 seasons
** assume final ranking of #26 when team finished outside top 25

This tells me Cals teams are overrated preseason quite a bit. We all knew this team had 0 business in top 10 preseason. Atleast most of us. 4ever, bigboard, catsrunnin had us #1 and still do.

UK is still 17th and has a shot to make a run like 2011 or 2014. And to prove the AP is a joke UK won at WVU and we are way ahead of them in the RPI. Rhode Island is way overrated, too. Not to mention Kansas and UNCheat.

The point of this post was to point out that Cal’s performance is ‘middle of the pack’ among KY coaches – along with 2 coaches that were basically run out of town (Smith and Hall) and one that was fired (Sutton).

I guess we’ll get to see what kind of a coach he really is when the NBA kills the one and done experiment.

UK is 17th in the RPI. This poll means nothing. And last time UK went into the tournament undefeated they made it all the way to the finals. What’s sad is people complaining about Cal when he has 6 elite 8s and 4 final fours in 8 years. That’s insanely good.

1 title and 1000 nba guys. Any decent coach should have these results.

It would be great if he had 2-3 titles but it’s obviously not easy to win it all. At least we have the most final fours and wins. And for comparisons sake Self has been at Kansas for twice as long and only has 1 title and 2 final fours. They’ve had plenty of one and dones. I’ll take Cal.

    • Eazy
      8:14 pm March 5, 2018 Permalink

And the main point you left out was those nba guys were freshmen. That’s the key. It’d be different if they were veterans. But like I said at least Cal advances deep most years unlike every other program.

Lol, UL at least has a shot at a title now…in the NIT. UL has 4 q1-2 wins. UK has 13. UL is a joke. The ap poll is a joke. All that matters is the RPI and quadrant wins. Oh, and Parrish also has us ranked.

  7. Eazy

Absolutely ridiculous that we fall out after losing to a top 25 team on the road. We were a 6 point dog. Kansas stays in the top 10 after getting blasted at sub 90 OSU. WV lost to a depleted Texas team and they are still ranked despite being way behind UK in the RPI and losing head to head. Gonzaga is a joke, too. I love our chances in March. We’d be favored over half these top 25 teams.

UK has the 7th most quad 1-2 wins in the country and is 17th in the RPI. This proves the obvious bias in the media. Rhode Island? They only lost to St Joes by 30 last week! Pathetic
