Kentucky 1-6 in games shooting under 30% from three

Kentucky’s shooting struggles this season are well-documented, but one stat in particular jumps out: the Cats are 1-6 in games in which they shoot under 30% from three-point range.

Tonight was Kentucky’s latest poor performance from the outside, the Cats connecting on only three of 14 shots from beyond the arc. Quade Green accounted for two of those and Wenyen Gabriel the other. Kevin Knox was 0-3 from three-point land, another indicator that as he goes, the team goes.

“You know what, it’s funny when the ball goes in it looks pretty good,” Calipari said afterwards. “Your offense looks better. We got some guys that are struggling to make shots and a 3-14 from the three is not going to get it done. You’re not going to — you know, in a game like this — now they only made 5-21. But those two threes, if we make those, we win in pretty good fashion. So he was making them and the rest of the guys weren’t.”

Lol, is this supposed to be some kind of revelation? “If you shoot really bad you’re more likely to lose”?

Part 2 when you value athletes at the cost of having a balance and players who are really good shots you have more games shooting poorly. This is especially true when the other team is good enough to force you to play half court offense. Even more so when the other team knows they can zone you with impunity.

Right? That was my reaction. Hey… We’re 0-7 when scoring fewer points.

If you look at the UWV game, we hit lots of treys. Yet the three ball usually in our game plan. Didn’t we also beat a team known for hitting threes earlier in the season, and we out-performed them? Fort Wayne? Would it be wise to set Knox, Wenyen, SGA and Green up for more 3’s? I’d say they wouldn’t have the percentage of the Unforgettables, but they’d knock down enough to matter, and it would open up the paint. And I don’t see that we have a chance without a major change, or would this be a tweak?
