Keldon Johnson’s McDonald’s All-American Game Mission: “Dominate and Kill”

Kentucky signee Keldon Johnson isn’t happy to just be a McDonald’s All-American.  He wants to crush the competition in Atlanta.

“I came here to dominate, kill and when I go back to Oak Hill I’ll have the same mindset: dominate and kill.”

Johnson will participate in All-Star festivities, including tonight’s Powerade Jam Fest Slam Dunk Contest, before departing for the Geico High School Nationals in New York City.  With a National Title on the horizon, you would think the 6’7″ small forward would take it easy during All-Star week.  That was not the case.

In the quiet early morning practice you could hear Johnson’s voice echoing throughout the gym.  He was constantly talking on defense, hoping to inject energy into the practice.

“I definitely want to bring energy and help everybody get going,” Johnson said.  “I’ve always been vocal.  I’m trying to emphasize being more vocal on defense because it’s going to win most of our games at the next level.”

He turned energetic defense into explosive offense.  Once the team was off and running, he could not be stopped.  Johnson scored ten points in a three-minute stretch.  It all started at the rim.

Then he caught a lob off the backboard in transition.

That was not as impressive as the tip-slam that my clumsy fingers were too slow to catch. I did however capture the bucket that ended his scoring outburst, a coast-to-coast AND ONE.

Johnson’s first practice was a resounding success, hopefully an omen for more good things to come from future Wildcats this week at the McDonald’s All-American Game.

Looks really good and love the fact that he understand talking on defense. Hopefully the talking will catch on to other players next year. Overall really like him and hope the whole team becomes a team of dominates.

Yessir, love the attitude. We’re going to need a scorer like this if Knox leaves. Now KJ just needs to spend his down time talking EJ Montgomery into joining him at UK and we’ll be all set.
