John Calipari Tells Paul Finebaum He has No Plans to Run for Public Office

At the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, John Calipari joined Paul Finebaum but did not stick to sports on the SEC Network show.  Instead, Paul was more curious about Calipari’s reaction to the 30 for 30, his lunch with Bill Clinton and other celebrity inspirations.

Most importantly, Paul asked Cal a question we’ve always wanted to know the answer to: “You ever thought about running for something?”

Calipari quickly responded, “No.  My mother used to say, ‘You could be President someday.’  But that was her way of saying, ‘Dream big.  Think big.  Do what you want.  You could be President, why can’t you?'”

Her message from years ago is a message he shares with his players.  “I make sure to tell my players don’t be afraid to have big dreams.”  It was the most basketball discussed during their 12-minute conversation.

Before the conclusion of the interview, Calipari made sure to add this about potentially running for public office: “I’m just trying to keep me job here.”

You can listen to Paul’s interviews with Mark Stoops and John Calipari here.  You’ll hear an optimistic Stoops and plenty of name drops from Coach Cal, including a story about the time Cal had lunch with Warren Buffett at KFC.
