John Calipari is here to stay.
This afternoon Seth Davis reported thatUCLA talked extensively with the Kentucky head coach, before UK responded with a deal that would keep him at Kentucky for the rest of his life. Tonight UK Athletics confirmed that deal will be signed to keep Calipari in Lexington.
“We can confirm that the University of Kentucky has agreed to terms on a long-term contract with Coach Calipari to finish his career at Kentucky,” said a UK spokesman.
Details of the new deal are not yet available. On his call-in show, Calipari revealed this deal has been in the works for quite some time.
“It had nothing to do with all the other stuff. Every year that I’m here, something at the end of the year happens. Someone’s trying to call or talk,” Calipari said. “You think of what we’ve built, the culture that we’ve built. We’ve done it all kind of different ways. We’ve got good kids. The academics, that we’re allowed to give lifetime scholarships. We’re allowed to bring these kids back. We insure these kids. This is a situation and a culture that’s taken time to build. Where else would I want to coach?”
He added, “This is a unique place and I appreciate the opportunities I’ve had here.”
The timing is impeccable. Ten years ago to the date, John Calipari was introduced as the Cats’ head coach.
