John Calipari says Alex wants to come back

John Calipari accepted the Adolph Rupp Cup this afternoon, making him the first coach to ever receive the award twice. Cal had his swag back a little, joking around with Herky Rupp and laughing along to stories told by Mike Pratt and Herky before taking some questions from the media.

One of the first questions asked was about Alex Poythress, who was reportedly still mulling whether or not he wanted to come back to school. Cal settled it. “We’ve talked. I think he’s wanting to come back.”

In fact, Cal said he can’t wait to get Alex back on the court, along with his other veterans, including Marcus Lee. “It’s their time now,” Cal said of Poythress and Lee. “This is their time.”

What about Derek Willis and Dominique Hawkins? “I would say both of them [sense an opportunity]. I’ve seen Derek in the gym on his own putting up shots.”

I’m probably reading into this incorrectly, but “this is Alex’s and Lee’s time” could mean they’re veterans and need to be leaders, or we aren’t getting Diallo and Lee, and AP will be getting huge minutes at the 4 (Lee some at 5)?

    Guess we’ll know soon enough.

We’ll need both AlPo and Lee at full strength to be nationally competitive next season…

Apparently Thon Maker cut his list to UK and IU

Hmmm, interesting. If he decides on UK before Diallo does, what does that do for our chances with Diallo? Wouldn’t Maker be available in the second semester at the earliest? Sounds like a possible problem for team chemistry to me.

If Alex Poythress comes back, then we’ll have four starter caliber Juniors: Alex, Marcus Lee, Hawkins, & Willis (and two of them are bonafide Kentucky kids)… and we’ll have a battle-tested Sophomore at the Point in Ulis. Add to that, the JUCO transfer Mulder that we could possibly add.

Will this shut-up some of the naysayers that complain about the one-and-dones every year? What if we don’t win with such a veteran roster? Will this disprove and shutup those who clamor on and on for more 3-4 year guys instead of uber-talented Freshmen who leave early. I doubt it.
