Jemarl Baker is in the NCAA transfer portal

Kentucky’s Jemarl Baker is the newest name in the NCAA’s transfer portal. Friend of the program Evan Daniels broke the news via Twitter on Wednesday.

Baker made big plays late in the year during the tournament run, but with Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley coming back, plus incoming five-star guard Tyrese Maxey, it’s easy to understand why he would consider other options for his redshirt sophomore season.

Baker averaged 2.3 points in 9.1 minutes per game in 2018-19, while shooting 31.0% from outside, which ranked fifth on the team.

Good luck to Jemarl wherever he ends up. My guess is it’s somewhere out west so he can be closer to home.

Baker has very solid defensive fundamentals. Not an exaggeration at all. Hagans will eventually be a better on ball defender when he learns to just stay in front of his man.

Well, he played great on ball defense for a game or two… while it was surprising and impressive I think doing it for an entire season would mean more. I’d still take hero or hagans to lock up the opposing guy

Actually transferring like this, he loses a year, right? I guess he won’t be that old in that case.

    • Han
      1:12 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

Since his redshirt year was medical, he might have 3 years after sitting out one.

    • StillBP
      1:15 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

Doesn’t he lose the year of transfer? So if he played one and loses one, I think he only has two left. Could be wrong *shrugs*

    • ClutchCargo
      1:58 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

Medical hardship waiver/redshirt wouldn’t come into play if he transfers. You get 5 years to play 4, so he could still do that if he stayed. By transferring, he would have to sit out another season, which would leave him 2 years to play 2 seasons. A medical hardship waiver to get a 6th year is only for when you lose 2 seasons for reasons beyond your control. Baker would only have lost 1 of those seasons.

Cue the people saying he wasn’t good enough to play here. Same people also complain that we don’t have 4-year players like Virginia.

Assuming he does move on (and it’s likely), hopefully Cal adds another guard via Grad Transfer or something. With one of our recruits already rehabbing, you never know when injuries could screw us like happened some this year.

    • loosey101
      1:14 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

Yup. Same people that said Matthews and Wiltjer weren’t good enough.

That’s the curse of this program, unfortunately, either produce or it’s next man up. It hurts us when it comes to these potential three to four year players.

Kyle Guy is basically the same as Tyler Herro. He stayed 3 years and they won a championship. I just think that Kentucky is becoming it’s own version of the G-League. If these players went anywhere else they wouldn’t even be considering the draft. Kentucky is it’s own kryptonite. If Baker is worried about playing time then why would he go somewhere and not play at all next year?

    • JT919

Tyler Herro is 3 inches taller and more athletic.

I thought he was overrated as a shooter/scorer but obviously played some great defense later in the season. I don’t think it’s a huge loss next year and might free up a spot for an additional transfer. Where we’d really miss him is his Junior and Senior year. He obviously doesn’t want to be a bench player though. I did really like Baker and wish him well.

    • UKinIN
      1:21 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

If he played great defense why didn’t he shut down the Auburn guards? Nothing against Baker. I wish him the best. But if he wants to be a more important player he’s making the right choice.

    • Pensacola_Cat_Fan
      1:28 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

In all fairness, he only played like a minute against Auburn. He made one mistake (albeit a big one) and got benched for the rest of the game.

    • Alex90

I am kind of shocked by this news. I really think he would get playing time next year with only 4 scholarship guards (unless R.J. Hampton is a real possibility than I expected). With injuries and foul trouble, we need four on the roster. I guess Brad can help in a spell, but I wonder about his “D.” Plus I think Cal is hesitant to play him much. Maybe that grad transfer Pilgrim wouldn’t tell us about is a guard…

The hemorrhaging of players has reached a point of absolute absurdity. Cal is fine with it and basking in the glory of sending a record number of players to the NBA. He went so far as to say that UK officials have endorsed his methods by extending his contract for the next 600 years. Kentucky has become turnstile U

SOB! All these transfers kill our depth! One year players and gone (quite a few not lottery picks, first round, or even drafted) add in the transfers…it’s just far too much turnover to hang banners. If you’re not getting the super elite level one and dones and even then no guarantees look at Duke past two seasons. I’ll always support and root for all of our guys but I’m about over one and done.

I love Cal, but part of me feels like he needs to find a way to get guys like this to hang around for 3 or 4 years to develop into solid role players. I know he wants to bring in the top talent, but we need both. He needs to find away to balance the playing time enough to get these guys 10-15 minutes of consistent clock every game. Unless Baker has just made his own mind up to get closer to home. But it is a bit concerning to lose so much offense and shooting. Only retuning player who can shoot AT ALL is Quickley. These new guys better be good!

  28. Fitz
    2:06 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

It was never a good sign when players transfer, but in today’s game where players want to play instead of sit, it has become more the norm. A mid-major is where Baker could be a star. At UK nothing more than a spot player. He was a very good on ball defender, but he never had to defend an entire game so we really don’t know how good of a defender he is or isn’t.

  29. VirginiaCat
    2:31 pm April 17, 2019 Permalink

For those who believe that the main purpose of the basketball program is to help young men realize their dreams and get to the NBA as soon as they are reasonably marketable, then Cal is the perfect coach. Seriously, he has no peers when it comes to getting players to the NBA at the soonest possible moment. I get that. If you believe, however, that the main purpose of the program is to build teams and win national championships, then you are in a different camp. In 2015 and prior years, Cal could straddle that fence and do both. Post 2015, it has been a different story. If you take comfort in shooting the messenger, you will likely run out of ammunition in years to come.

I believe the main purpose of college is to make a path for your career. Our players have that path earlier than others. I’m not going to hold that against Cal or them players who are pursuing their dream career. I went to college 4 years to become a CPA. If I could’ve gotten my CPA after 1 year of college, I would have.
