Jeff Goodman has Kentucky barely cracking the top 25 in latest preseason poll

Jeff Goodman believes Kentucky will be lucky to be ranked in the top 25 when preseason polls are released as things stand currently.

In his most recent rankings, Goodman placed the Wildcats at No. 23 overall, putting them behind the likes of Arizona State, Creighton, Houston, Richmond, Rutgers, Stanford, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and Louisville, among others.

The reasoning? Kentucky returns just one rotation player from last season in Keion Brooks Jr.

Should they add another frontcourt piece, Goodman would be more willing to move the Cats up a bit, but the current roster doesn’t do much for him in the slightest.

“Big Blue Nation probably won’t be happy about my placement of the Kentucky Wildcats, but they have just one returnee from this past season, and that’s Keion Brooks and his 4.5 points per game,” he said. “They can move up if they can add a frontcourt grad transfer, but the current roster isn’t worthy of a top-20 ranking.”

To drive his point home even further, Goodman said Kentucky fans should be “ecstatic” that he has the Wildcats ranked where they are now.

Here was Goodman’s entire top 25:

  1. Baylor
  2. Villanova
  3. Gonzaga
  4. Iowa
  5. Wisconsin
  6. Michigan State
  7. Kansas
  8. Virginia
  9. Arizona State
  10. Creighton
  11. Texas Tech
  12. Duke
  13. Houston
  14. Richmond
  15. Rutgers
  16. Stanford
  17. West Virginia
  18. Alabama
  19. North Carolina
  20. Tennessee
  21. Florida
  22. Louisville
  23. Kentucky
  24. Florida State
  25. Oklahoma State

What do you guys think?

Jeff who? Didn’t he used to be on the Roseanne Barr show?

Who cares? It’s April. Hopefully we’ll have a basketball season.

That big hog head…… he looks like someone plastered a normal face on a sack of potatoes. Pre Season rankings mean nothing. He should know better than to piss of the BBN regardless.

A normal face, ha ha ha. He’s so ugly he would make a funeral procession turn up a dead-end alley.

He definitely put UL one spot ahead just to troll. Talk about not being T25 worthy? Who do they have left on that team better than even Brooks? Much less our top recruiting class.

I rolled at the “normal face on a sack of potatoes” comment. That’s a really good burn.

Not sure why anyone is surprised by this. We have a brand new product. Unseen by anyone. I think lower 25 is exactly where ( maybe even slightly above ) we should be.

We typically are pretty good when Cal rolls in the #1 recruiting class- and these are top notch recruits compared to some of his other classes. Probably his 2nd best class ever.

I have no problem with his ranking. This team has no returning players except Brooks. Freshman will play like freshman and this team could lose 10-12 games. That is if there’s a season.

One and done college ball is played out. Blue-bloods suck til March, manage to win conference, then get beat by a team of hot shooters. Rinse and repeat. Not just us, college ball as a whole is a trash product right now. A Top 25 w/ Richmond Rutgers Creighton Houston Stanford… Even if he’s right, who cares? All of college basketball is on the hot seat. The roster turnover is comical, they might as well be playing pick-up.

Well, considering that 1) we’re 2 weeks removed from what would have been the championship game and 2) Goodman is always desperate for clicks and is barred from UK basketball by Cal, I would say this is worth almost as much as Lunardi’s bracket guesses.

100% correct. That the NCAA allowed their #2 product to get trashed and ruined is infuriating.

I’m no fan of those who reside in the ivory towers of the NCAA but how exactly is the demise (if there is one) their fault? One and done is a NBA rule. The recent G league proposal of paying top tier high school kids decent money is a NBA rule. They could go the baseball route and require kids to commit to 3 years but then you’d never see the top tier kids go to college. What’s the alternative?

And here we have a couple of grumpy old farts wishing for the good ole days again when Larry Bird was on top of the world and you could still slap ladies asses or some shit. Just stfu already with the constant complaining about one and done. No one cares about your musty old opinion.

I also have no argument with UKs ranking. In fact, I like the Cats under the radar to start the season. You just can’t put Kentucky in the top 10 just because they are, well, Kentucky.

  13. lexslamman

I wouldn’t put UK in a top 25 right now. Roster management has become a total disaster in Lexington.

How so? They have every position covered except center which you don’t even need to be good these days.

They’ll likely start future NBA talent at 4 positions…… just gotta drag them up the curve quickly

Here’s a fresh new idea. Take a page from college football, wow did I say that, and don’t rank anyone until around thanksgiving. Rank means nothing up until about Feb anyway. Jeff Goodman: Look at me! Look at me!!

They will rank them in top 15 to begin season because we play in champions classic and they need all 4 ranked in top 15 to draw numbers. Then we’ll lose some early ones, could lose champions classic by a lot, and drop out of top 25. But by late January no one will want to play them, then in March an experienced team will beat them. Same story different year.

Frankly, it would be nice to start the season UNDER-rated for once, instead of wildly OVER-rated.

Not bothered and after early season struggles in previous years with similarly experienced or even more experience on the roster I can’t fault the logic. Want more respect then stop losing to Seton Hall, Evansville, Utah etc etc. Last team we had even close to next year in terms of inexperience was the Randle year and that was a rough season until the end. I actually prefer to be ranked around there and try to climb as opposed to starting high and free falling if they drop some early ones. Just my opinion.

    5:28 pm April 24, 2020 Permalink

Honestly, I don’t feel like I have a lot of ammo to disagree. Totally new and untested roster. We had more retuning returning experience in 2013. I think Dontae Allen might be the wild card in all this. Everyone seems to have forgotten about him.

  23. makeitstop
    5:38 pm April 24, 2020 Permalink

Sounds about right to me. No production coming back though I really like Brooks. High hopes for Allen but he won’t have played for 2 years and he was a 4 star guy. Great class but there’s no AD or KAT or Fox/Monk, it’s solid but Not flashy and it’s young. If we get a stud transfer it will make a big difference in rankings but to be fair, not in immediate impact as they try to get chemistry. It could be a roller coaster til February even if they are as good as billed. Hang on.

We will not be a top 25 team. Other than Hagan’s there’s not one player I’d replace from last year with this year coming. And let the “idiots” start how good Cal will do developing them… 22-12 ousted in second round, but oh wait second in the SEC ?

My sources say that Goodman is WAY overrating Ky at 23. With no experience returning, Ky is only a marginal top 60 team…
