Jeff Goodman drops Kentucky to No. 24 in updated preseason rankings

Kentucky may have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, the top-ranked incoming transfer in Olivier Sarr, a Big East transfer who started 79 games at Creighton in Davion Mintz, and a returning player former Cats and current coaches expect to explode next season in Keion Brooks Jr., but the Wildcats will be lucky to be a fringe top-25 program in 2020-21.

That is, of course, if you believe Stadium college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman.

In his updated rankings – yes, the ones following Olivier Sarr’s commitment – Goodman listed Kentucky at No. 24 in the nation going into the upcoming season.

In fact, this comes after Goodman listed the Wildcats at No. 23 overall in his previous rankings, meaning he believes UK somehow got worse after adding Sarr.

Here was his ranking and roster breakdown:

24. Kentucky

Last Season: 25-6, 15-3 in SEC
Lose (8): G Immanuel Quickley* (NBA Draft, 16.1 ppg), G Tyrese Maxey* (NBA Draft, 14.0 ppg), PF Nick Richards* (NBA Draft, 14.0 ppg, 7.8 rpg), PG Ashton Hagans* (NBA Draft, 11.5 ppg), PF EJ Montgomery* (NBA Draft, 6.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg), C Nate Sestina (5.8 ppg), F Kahlil Whitney (NBA Draft, 3.3 ppg), SG Johnny Juzang (transferred to UCLA, 2.9 ppg)
Starters Back: None
Other Returners (1): F Keion Brooks Jr. (Soph., 4.5 ppg)
Redshirted (1): G Dontaie Allen (RS Fr.)
Eligible Transfers (1): G Davion Mintz (Creighton, Grad, DNP)
Potential Sit-Out Transfers (2): C Olivier Sarr (Wake Forest, Jr., 13.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg), F Jacob Toppin (URI, Soph., 5.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg)
Add (6): SG-SF BJ Boston (No. 6), SG-SF Terrence Clarke (No. 8), PG Devin Askew (No. 25), PF Isaiah Jackson (No. 30), PF Lance Ware (No. 40), SF Cam’Ron Fletcher (No. 58)

In his previous update that had Kentucky listed at No. 23, Goodman said he would be more willing to move the Cats up a bit if they added an instant-impact piece in the frontcourt, but the pre-Sarr roster didn’t do much for him in the slightest.

“Big Blue Nation probably won’t be happy about my placement of the Kentucky Wildcats, but they have just one returnee from this past season, and that’s Keion Brooks and his 4.5 points per game,” he said. “They can move up if they can add a frontcourt grad transfer, but the current roster isn’t worthy of a top-20 ranking.”

To drive his point home even further at the time, Goodman said Kentucky fans should have been “ecstatic” that he had the Wildcats ranked where they were originally.

Here is Goodman’s latest top-25 rankings heading into the 2020-21 season:

  1. Baylor
  2. Villanova
  3. Gonzaga
  4. Iowa
  5. Wisconsin
  6. Michigan State
  7. Kansas
  8. Virginia
  9. Texas Tech
  10. Creighton
  11. Duke
  12. Arizona State
  13. Richmond
  14. Rutgers
  15. West Virginia
  16. North Carolina
  17. Stanford
  18. Alabama
  19. Houston
  20. Tennessee
  21. Florida
  22. Texas
  23. Louisville
  24. Kentucky
  25. Florida State

If you’re somehow dying to see the rest of the rankings, you can find them here.

(I won’t hold it against you if you’re not.)

Let them rank us where ever. We are always young and start out a little rocky. But we all know everyone will be picking us to a final 4 because march we are always a better team after some time playing together and some chemistry

The fact that he thinks we should be ecstatic about anything he says shows how FOS he really is. How can anyone be so dumb and so arrogant at the same time?

Until Sarr is eligible, I could see us fringe top 20. If he is eligible, top 10.

STOP WITH THIS IDIOT!!!!! I didn’t read it, because I never acknowledge his drivel, but putting everything he does on here just gives him exactly what he wants—exposure to and attention from the biggest fan base in the universe! This is the only reason he keeps up his inane and feeble attempts at trolling. If KSR would stop sharing 99% of the people who respond to his dumbassery wouldn’t even see it!

The only thing about clowns like this guy, Lunardi and a few others such as Thameltoe that upsets me is the fact that they are able to increase their clicks/reads tenfold by trolling this fan base. While I never give any of them so much as a look it is obvious just from this comment section the ridiculous amount of undeserved attention these (should be) irrelevant people gain by their baseless rambling. If the UK fans would just ignore them none of these tools would have a job.

To be honest, he’s probably much more correct than the nitwits ranking us in the top 10. We’re returning 5 pts of production, and yes we have 2 potential stars and some really solid other freshman, but without Sarr it’s going to be a slow start to the season.

If you are being honest though, you know that’s about right. This team will be good in March, but will struggle mightily for quite a while

    • BowdenQB4ever
      4:18 pm May 22, 2020 Permalink

That’s the hope. This will most likely be a team that overacheives if they reach the sweet 16, though we know if you get that far anything can happen. Most fans wont be happy with that, but at least we’ll get to see some guys who barely contributed get drafted well before they’re ready to compete on the NBA level.

Kentucky will begin the year as a work in progress, with virtually all new players and one quality transfer (if he is eligible to play). We don’t know if the new players will live up to their potential and how the team will mesh in terms of chemistry. Kentucky will likely struggle early, per usual, have an up and down regular season, and try to get it together in time for the tournament. When all is said and done, I think that early departures and transfers will come back to haunt us. Goodman’s ranking seems a bit pessimistic, but he is not as far off as we would like to think.

Seems too high. Next year is a bubble team. Only thing that will get them 20wins is weak SEC. And we all know an upset loss in the sweet sixteen or elite 8 is the new norm for Cal.
