Jayhawks spoil Kentucky’s fun in Rupp Arena

A day full of excitement around the Wildcats ended in heartbreak as Kansas came in and stole the show and the victory. The Cats got out to an early 12-point lead in the beginning and all was happy in Big Blue Nation, but the Jayhawks came back and won the game in the end.

That’s now two straight losses for Kentucky and you can kiss that No. 1 seed goodbye in the tournament.

This team just cannot guard…how do you let a team put up 52 points on you at your place? UCLA did the same thing…I’m sorry but this is just not a very good basketball team.

What happened to Camp Cal? You could drive a freight train down the middle tonight. Points in the paint – wow. KU had a wide open door. We did not know how to attack the zone. Guess if you practice a zone, you cannot attack one.

Can we hold on to a 4 seed?

Seriously Out Coached. I cringed every time there was a timeout because it was almost a guaranteed easy basket by Kansas

Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist aren’t walking back through that door to play again.

Briscoe was the only guard with a positive assist to turnover ratio. He tied most rebounds, had most assists also shot a better percentage that Fox and barely worse than Monk. Shot better from 3 than Monk. Can’t lay this one on Briscoe.

Totally disagree. Briscoe didn’t hardly get any of those stats until the game was already over. We looked much better in the first half when he was on the bench. He’s a liability on both ends. He was out of position on defense the whole night.

    • JusSayin

Briscoe had 10 points, 5 assists and 8 rebounds while the game was still competitive. We took him out for 2 minutes in the second half its was tied when he went out… we were down 4 when he came back in.

And it got much worse when he came back in. He couldn’t guard anyone on KU’s team, and KU was able to double team Monk and Bam because they weren’t worried about him. Don’t get me wrong, he certainly wasn’t the only one that played terrible, but Briscoe has been a liability in every big game we have played.

CATS inability to attack the zone, TO’s and FTs really killed the CATS. Seemed like they played like a bunch of “freshmen” tonight. Live and die with our freshmen. Jayhawks played well with season players and a short bench. Pretty sure they lost their #1 seed tonight. Can the bleeding be stopped with the bulldogs? To many jump shots. Love me some Willis but he hurt us on defense several times. Go CATS!

I’m officially done with UK basketball. So sick of shitty refs. This is why I nearly gave up after the 38-1 loss. When refs refuse to make calls.
No excuses. UK missed a plethora of free throws and had nearly 20 turnovers. But no calls on hacks, Gabriel getting shoved in the back for a rebound, and Monk getting a nice little shove at the end is just beyond me. Then to top it off the kid from Kansas fouled out on a play that wasn’t even a foul. He was giving ground with his hands up. Eff the refs. Good luck KSR. Good luck Cal. Refs can suck a big one. They decide the game. Not the coaches. Not the players. The stripes

Just tired of fairweather fans who don’t know enough to talk about basketball. Yes we should have won tonight, but Cal can’t make players hit shotsand freethrows, not make bad passes or move out to guard players. Whatever he tells them to do they have to execute.

    • UKfanman01

@ justaguyinthebackrow Fairweather? Last time I checked I’ve watched all of the televised games since I started watching basketball. I stood behind Tubby when everyone had given up. I watched the painful years with Gillespie when they got beat by VMI and Gardner Webb. I watch the televised football games and don’t lose hope. I don’t know what I’m talking about? I’m fairweather? I never asked you to miss me in the first place. I get tired of refs deciding the outcomes of games. The multiple no calls when KU climbed the backs of UK players for rebounds. The fact that Bam was literally hugged from behind when he went to dunk the ball and got a measly foul, which should’ve been a T. The kid had no play on the ball at all. Or Jackson pulling up on the rim after an ally oop. What about the two or three times the ball clearly went out on KU and they miraculously ended up with the ball? I could keep on naming pal. But the all knowing guy in the back row knows that I’m clueless when it comes to basketball.
Like I stated in my first comment, they didn’t hit free throws and had almost 20 turnovers. That’s inexcusable sure. I totally agree. But you throw in 10 plus no calls and then some of the measly fouls that were called, it’s too hard to come back from. The refs’ bad calls are just as inexcusable. Not a single person can tell me since SEC play has started that the refs have been consistent or good… Period. For or against UK. The game should be called evenly. Refs take the fun out of the game. Just like Gabriel getting the put back in the last 2 minutes of the Tenn game being called an over the back. It took the wind out of their sails. I feel like when you’re fighting an uphill battle (being behind) and you’re getting seemingly every call go the other way you just succumb.

He is talking about during the Tennessee game that the wind was taken out. I agree. I believe the main reason fox has trouble stopping players from driving because his fear of getting into foul trouble. I know people say that monk should be getting more rebounds. I will take it a step further, as athletic as he is he should be blocking more shots. I’m tired of seeing fox and monk give up when the other team has a run out.

  16. “Who’s ready to round baaaaaaallllllll?” Apparently not us.

This is disheartening. We’re getting worse and not better. I guess I’m panicking too early, but I’m starting to think Cal will never hang #9. Matt can talk all day about how we did it with freshmen in 2012, but we still had some experienced talent on that team in TJ, DM, and DL. And yeah, he’s right that we almost stole one in 2014, but it just seems that there’s always something that bites us, whether it’s something to do with the youth, or one (or a few) of Cal’s head scratching moves like in 2015.

They would be a great team if they played team ball and didn’t worry about SC top 10 plays and how many points they scored. I just dont think it’s going to happen. I would love to be wrong but I really don’t think they are gonna “get it 100% this year”.

If you knew anything about how Cal coaches you would realize how assine that statement is. Cal knows he has the best players he doesn’t worry about what the other coach is doing he builds confidence in his guys to make plays. 17 turnovers is what lost the game and not one of those were made by Cal.

I agree he didn’t make any turnovers but when monk started playing 1 on 5 he didn’t take him out of the game, regain his team focus, THEN put him back in. I’m not saying monk lost the game, but he tried to take the over and he just didn’t have it at that moment. A great coach would have had the balls to take out ur star for a coaching moment.

Let’s face it. Bam is a great physical specimen, but not a very good basketball player. Humphries has regressed from last year. This team has no clue what to do against a zone. The officials are not great but that is not the reason we lost. The players look desperate at times as to what to do. I love Cal, but what is going on. they do not look well coached. I have no expectations of this team going very far. Disappointing but this is what they are. Good but not great.

There are literally no quality wins left to be had on the schedule. I don’t see how we can get a 3 seed if we win out at this point. Didn’t deliver in big games except for UNC and a bad bad lost to UT. Our only quality win going into the tournament was from December against a team that is just a 9 KenPom, i.e. likely 3 seed.

    The keys to the loss…
21 points off turnovers for KU
44 points in paint for KU
we miss 9 free throws, luckily they kept us in it by missing 8
they have a coach we have a recruiter
Bam had exactly 1 more defensive rebound than Dom did but played 21 minutes more so Dom really beat him. Maybe Cal should worry more about that than trying to feed him on offense, feed him defensive boards.

Although Ky has had the highly touted recruiting classes and the most players sent to the NBA, it hasn’t translated into nearly the success that was expected. It is just too hard for freshmen to make the adjustments from playing individual style AAU ball to playing D1 level team ball. I’m not seeing a deep run in the tournament from this group. Briscoe has digressed. Who was the last non-freshmen to show improvement under Cal? Think this is a legit question.

Yea I really personally have had enough of Cal trying to change the measure of success to number of NBA players. At any level of any sport the goal is to win, not to send players somewhere else and we have let him get away with it. This year we do have 2 fairly high quality seniors but that isn’t going to help this bunch.

Same play by Kansas all night. Shuffle up top and run a pick and roll on the third handoff. Our big does not step out on the hedge but backs off. This leads to the offensive player to drive and pick up fouls on our bigs or drawing a player out of position for an easy pass off for a layup.

We further don’t need to go for the blocked shot all the time. This leads to the offside opponent rebounder to be wide open for the put back.

Several lazy one handed passes leading to break out transition points for Kansas as well.

  27. Rixter

when you have one team that jumps out to big leads early, then lets the opponent come back and thrash you, what you have is one team making in-game adjustments, and the other team unable to make adjustments.

When the team not making adjustments allows opponents to come back in games over and over….. well….

I despise Duke and everything to do with them BUT their coach does know what the actual goal of college basketball is as does Kansas’ coach.

Ours knows his limitations so he tries to change the measure of success. A lot of people have bought into it. I guess it is cool for him that he has a lot of rich friends but for me as a UK basketball fan for a lot longer than he has been it is about trying to catch UCLA which isn’t happening under Cal. He will keep the win total looking good in the SEC but my hope we would catch UCLA in my lifetime seems very unlikely.

    • Ed, I’ve always hoped, but not expected, to catch UCLA. After 2012, and with how bad UCLA has been at times, I thought maybe it might happen after all. Now, I just want to stay way ahead of UNC, Puke, and IU. Both Roy and K have won multiple titles, esp. K, and Roy just barely missed wiining his 3rd and UNC’s 6th last uear. We need to get to 9 before any of them get to 6!

Really? 1 coach has won more during Cal’s tenure at UK, 7 years, and he has twice as many final fours as any, but you’re ready to give up on him? That’s idiotic.

    • Not giving up, but certainly venting. I just hate that we usually go 20 years or so between titles and UCONN won 3 in 15 or less, and K has won so many, including 2015 of all years.

Sure, I’d like to win every year, and ’15 still hurts. But it’s hard to win a championship. K is the only one that’s won more while Cal has been at UK and we’re not getting him, nor would I want to. Cal is the only coach we’ve had that gives us a shot every year. It’s not always pretty from beginning to end, but it’s there. That said, I too would like a couple guys to stick around and be leaders and heaters. I don’t think Briscoe, Willis and Hawkins are the equivalent of Lamb, Jones and Miller. Maybe they can get there, I don’t know.

Do people just make up their minds that they are going to blame Briscoe? Do we even look at the stats anymore?

    • Yep, one guy ain’t the problem.

Yea I already had that discussion in another thread. He outplayed all the other guards but he’s the problem somehow. Apparently he was supposed to get stats while he was on the bench. He had more rebounds, more assists, fewer turnovers, better assist to turnover ratio (obviously) than Fox and Monk. Shot better than Fox and barely worse than Monk and still better from 3 than Monk. All that playing far fewer minutes than either of them.

Briscoe was not the problem nor was Willis.

One other thing I noticed is that Briscoe just played this game instead of mouthing at Cal the whole game. Not saying Cal knows all but I’m not a fan of mouthing off to the coach and he played better when he just played the game.

He also outrebounded our big men per-minute by a wide margain.

Yall need to call it like it is with monk. He’s a volume shooter that takes bad shots early in the shot clock, and doesnt guard. Briscoe is euro league bound

I know Matt Jones Hates to read this, but he believes the criminal Hilary should have become our president, cal just isn’t a great coach. He is good but not great. He thinks the hero ball should go unchecked

Someone PLEASE come on here and chastise us all for not being coaches. Please justify this $hitty loss. Seriously. I would love for someone to provide some clarity and tell us how we are all wrong. Honestly, a cogent argument that we didn’t suck would soothe me greatly.

Cal doesn’t have uk’s best interest in mind. Only the star players. We won with Davis cuz that team was special. This team just isn’t.

17 turnovers leading to 21 Kansas points. There’s the game right there. Oh LOUSY free throw shooting (yet again)

It could be worse I guess given the issues Duke and Louisville (on and off the court are having this season…)

I wonder how good our team would be if Hawkins was given the chance to run the team for the last couple years. He needs to play more and monk needs a shooter leash.

Defense was pretty good for 12-14 minutes then it vanished.

I keep pointing this out but BEFORE Camp Cal we were the 7th ranked defense on KenPom. We are now 13.

Have you ever noticed that we struggle from halftime and into the second half with every loss? Here is why…..we are worse in second half when Cal and our offense are both on same end of the floor. He is up yelling and screaming, trying to call plays and stuff that Fox and Monk can ignore or can claim they can’t hear in first half. Is it possible to not switch ends after halftime? Just my 2 cents.

I have never been a referee but can someone explain to me why the defensive player gets called for a foul when the player jumps into the player. Isn’t that the offensive player initiating the contact?

I would like to know WHY Dom, one of our best defenders, only played FIVE minutes in the second half? What didn’t Fox drive it in more? Sure didn’t like Mason outfoxxing Fox! Fox was unstoppable when he was driving it in! Was the team concerned Cal would take them out if they didn’t feed Bam (who wasn’t making free throws)? This was a senseless loss! I think Cal thought we would win because he “had their attention” after UT, bet he wishes now we had had a miracle last-second shot there.

Monks defense is AWFUL. Fox plays defense like he is in foul trouble. The four spot is killing us and I think we need to go ahead and play a 4 guard offense. But that is what a GREAT coach would do.

Yes, big board thinks Cal is still god. Always will. And anyone who dares be critical will be attacked with personal insults.Looks like he changed his name, though. Justaguy has the same brown nosed pen. “Methinks” they are one in the same.

Hey trolls. Funny seeing you here. Why don’t you two ever post after a win?

So, let me get this straight: the first thing you do after a loss is come here and call me out by name, huh? LOL You trolls are so predictable.

And tippy, I don’t need to change my name to call f*ggots like you out. This one works just fine. See comment 55. I live in his head, rent free. 😉
