ESPN’s Jay Williams is in town for Saturday morning’s College GameDay broadcast and he spent part of his Friday afternoon giving his thoughts on Kentucky’s team, namely Ashton Hagans and PJ Washington.
Williams, who knows a thing or twelve about the point guard position, sees something special in Hagans.
“I use a word called ‘moxie’ for him,” Williams said. “I think a lot of players who are given the position of point guard, don’t know what comes with that, or entails that. For Ashton, we’re watching in front of our eyes, a young man develop and evolve into a leader this team really needs. You can have a team of very talent players, but in order to win a championship, you need that next level mentality, that dog mentality. I think that’s what Ashton brings to the table.”
As for Washington, Williams sees only one man in PJ Washington’s way: PJ Washington.
“There’s nobody in college basketball that can stop PJ Washington,” Williams said. “The only person physically, that may be able to hinder him, is Zion Williamson. Okay, thats .0001 percent of college basketball, okay? So PJ is the only person that stops PJ. The way that you get out of your own way is you get into what the team is trying to do; you get lost in the passion of the game.”
“For him, he has to communicate that. You want to see him yell at people. You want to see him lead. Now seeing him and Ashton do that, you feel like those were the two missing links of this team taking the next step and that leads you to winning a championship.”
You can catch the rest of Williams’ comments in the (shaky iPhone) video below, including his thoughts on the UK program.
“This is one of the best fan bases, if not the best, in college basketball… I love this place. This is one of the meccas of college basketball.”
