University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Jay Bilas: “Kentucky will contend for the national championship.”

Jay Bilas was a guest on Kentucky Sports Radio radio this morning and he had some wonderful things to say about John Calipari, Julius Randle, Andrew Harrison and the Kentucky basketball team. You can listen to the entire interview in the first hour of today’s podcast over at, or if listening isn’t your thing, you can find some of the quotes below.

On John Calipari, the person…

“John Calipari is not only a great coach, I think everybody knows that; he’s a Hall of Famer and has won championships, Final Fours, he’s won everywhere he has been, but he’s a great a human being. He’s a great guy — not a good guy, but a GREAT guy.”

On if Kentucky has the makeup to win it all…

“Kentucky will contend for the national championship this year.”

“With the talent level, the depth, and then the guard play, Kentucky is going to have really good capable guards that can not only handle it but shoot it, so I think you’ll see Kentucky go back to some of the dribble-drive motion principles.”

On Julius Randle, after seeing him play pickup games in the Craft Center…

“He can be one of the top players in the country this year. He’s going to be one of the top draft picks when he comes out. He has a maturity level in his body and how he plays; I think he’s got a little Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in him with how hard he goes after it and how hard he competes.”

“When he puts on the floor with one dribble, nobody could stop him. He’s so powerful; he’s going to shoot a lot of free throws.”

On Andrew Harrison…

“With the weapons he is going to have around him, I think he can be especially effective because he has really good size and can absorb a bump and still finish a play. And he can handle it and penetrate, he’s a good passer. And he’s a really good kid.”

On what Kentucky needs to work on now to be ready in March…

“The first thing for the entire group of new players, and for some of the sophomore too, is to talk more. They’re very quiet; there’s not a lot of talk out there, not a lot of talk on defense, not a lot of communication. Now it was a pickup game — will there be some in a regular game? It’d be better, but it wouldn’t be to the level they would want it or need it. And there’s not a lot of time to work on it. Even a pickup game is an opportunity.”

The Billastrator has spoken.

Am I required to say “first”?

This team is definitley deep enough to challenge any team in the country in their physicality. They are talented enough to beat any team at their own games. They are tall enough to erase open shot opportunities. The only question left to be answered is are they tough enough to win it all? I think they will be, but I hope Coach Cal can change that “think” to “know”.

    Also…Tards stink.

I don’t know what we need to do as BBall fans & the BBN, but we need to some how get Jay in the big seat at the NCAA.

That was Cal’s constant complaint last year; no talking on defense.

I hope the guys will realize how important that is. No talking on the floor is not good.

Bilas saying Kentucky will contend for a championship is a nice way of saying Kentucky will make the tourney this year. 68 teams contend for a NC every year,

Not sure how you’re taking that away from what he said. For one, Bilas always speaks his mind. If he meant UK will only make the tournament, I’m pretty sure he would have said that. Secondly, 68 teams don’t compete for the championship. When a 16 seed wins the title, then you can say that 68 teams compete, until then everyone knows that it’s really about a quarter of those that are genuine title contenders.

Also, extending your foolish suggestion to it’s end you could really say that all 300 something teams compete for the NC every year. But again, we all know that isn’t true.

Nope only 68 will contend, not everyone gets an invite. Like how UK didnt contend for a NC last year, because they were not in the tournament.

Nice seeing you last night, Matt! I think Jay is having a bro affair with Cal now. I know he is having a love affair with Kentucky and the BBN. Cal is a genius, he invites Jay to his home and Jay is mesmerized by him and his personality. Cal works his magic, gives him some good old Kentucky cooking and bourbon and Jay is a fan for life. I think I would rather have Jay the dookie on our side then dookie v and wildcat whisperer, don’t forget Matt is a dookie…
