Jamal Murray’s 33 points weren’t enough

Jamal Murray scored 33 of Kentucky’s 67 points but his unconscious performance from the field wasn’t enough to get the win.

Murray and the Cats lost to Ohio State, 74-67, in Brooklyn’s CBS Sports Classic.

Collectively, this team is just bad. BAD. To think that they’re ranked as the #4 team in the country at this point is laughable.

We are ranked too highly. And this is a down year in college ball. That’s probably why we’ve stayed so high.

Sometimes I can’t stand Cal, he has more capable players down on the bench and he doesn’t play them. This loss is on HIM, no excuse to losing to a horrible OSU team, even if they played above their heads.

      5:49 pm December 19, 2015 Permalink

Above their head would be a huge understatement. We all have cause for worry, but a win next week and all will be well.

Who in the world do you think is more capable?

Against an athletic team Willis is the defensive equivalent of Kyle Wiltjsherrrrr. Same for Humphries. Today would have done more to expose them than prove your point.

Although when OSU is hitting everything they throw up bad defense won’t matter as much.

Agree! When the starters aren’t getting it done, use the bench. Guys like Hawkins, Willis, Humphries, etc. might have been effective today, but we’ll never know…

      @Art

We still lost the game, so really, why would it hurt to play them? You force the other team to play your style of ball. Play the other big men and force them to play UK’s style.

I had a feeling this would be the outcome. Ohio State played very well. We struggled. Skal does not look like a 1st round draft pick. Murray is awesome. Still optimistic about the rest of the season though.

Sorry, mistaken identity: there was a guy who called himself rainman who ran one of the early message boards and posed as former uk pkayers to drive traffic to his site. At any rate, i don’t dosagree that time off may not ge in order, but at this point kids’ families have purchased plane tickets, made plans, etc… Be poor form to take it away now. They’ll be back in time to yave 3 or 4 good practices before they play the cheaterbirds.

  8. AndTheDevil
    5:54 pm December 19, 2015 Permalink

Still can’t figure out Willis not playing. I mean the kid ain’t super, but has provided energy and a spark every time he comes in. Also I heard he can shoot fairly well. But Cal seems to view “will get drafted” as more important than actually playing kids that might provide something. The fact Skal is still getting so many minutes despite providing walk on stats is ridiculous. Hell, put in Humphries since we were getting killed on the boards. But there’s no “NBA potential” there so that doesn’t perpetuate the “players first” myth. It’s not “players first” it’s really “NBA first”

Murray played his heart out. Even when we went on our run we were weak on the boards, weak on loose balls. A work in progress. Ohio State coached and played a great game.

This team believes their own hype and believes they don’t need to play hard. I knew poythress would disappear as soon as his shot got blocked. At this point i’d rather see his minutes go to willis, matthews and humphries.

Love our kids. Good kids with good hearts. Try hard. But they are a BAD team. There is no leadership, and there is no ‘go-go guy’ on this squad. I would never look down on them or disparage them as individuals – I could barely function at their age. However, this season is going to end up feeling a lot like 2013 or 2011 minus the final four finish. BAD losses to ordinary UCLA and Ohio State teams (and a likely beat-down next Saturday) will have this team staring at a 7 or 8 seed at best come March. Very, very disappointing.

Beatdown? The only good team Louisville has played beat them.

The rest of the teams they’ve played are ranked 200-300th….

    • bluebew
      6:18 pm December 19, 2015 Permalink

Samford 148; North Florida 132; Eastern Michigan 58; WKU 127, and others, as you state, in the 200’s….none in the 300 range (think highest is 245). And, of course, Michigan State who they had by the nads on the Spartans’ floor, and let them get away at the end. They are pummeling those other teams.

My point is simply this: This UK team hasn’t figured it out, and most likely will not “figure it out” (I’m not sure I even know what that means) based on what I’m seeing. And they will almost certainly not figure it out in the next week.

And, no, I’m not a UofL fan trolling. I’m a 45+ year UK fan who is just very, very disappointed in the uninspiring performances by this team.

They read the rankings of Louisville’s opponenets on the radio show – there were several ranked in the 200 and 300’s.

Hey, we can’t be super dominant EVERY year, right? 😉

And even if we do lose to the Tards (still doubtful), Cal’s record vs Hooker U would be 7-2. Thats called owning a team, and its not even close.

But I’m sure the Tard fans will hang their hats on a late December win, a la Indiana.

Okay, BigBoard. Maybe my mistake (would like to get the radio show’s list)….I was just referencing the NCAA Div 1 College Basketball RPI rankings updated as of 12/19/2015. Either way, most of those teams are not impressive/good teams. But by comparison, UCLA is 44. Ohio State is….are you ready?…..176. Oh, and next Saturday’s opponent is ranked 21. That’s higher than any of our opponents to date, including an overrated Duke team.

I hope I am back next Saturday eating crow. I really do. But I don’t think I will be.

I notice you simply like to throw out uninformed, confrontational keyboard diarrhea to anyone who fails to profess their undying affection for Coach Cal, and/or your point of view. In point of fact, this makes YOU the actual “bandwagoneer” – offering nothing but misinformed ‘facts’ and confrontational jibber-jabber.

Another bad loss to a mediocre team that had already suffered some embarrassing losses this year.

No excuse for this kind of bad performance…none.

No hustle and the defense was awful. Poythress doesn’t play hard enough. He picks and chooses when he wants to. He should be a monster on the boards. Skal is weak. Has a great shot. But to weak to get to the basket. Briscoe is a very good player. But can make some bad choices at the wrong time. But he does hustle. And also free throws were awful today. But I do agree with a lot on here why didn’t Cal use some of his bench more? Give Ulis and Murray some breathers and help settle them down.I do think this team can still be very good. But they are going to have to play smarter and with more heart. Right now I don’t see enough heart from everyone on the team. Some players get it some don’t. They better wake the hell up for Louisville.

  19. shelby
    7:58 pm December 19, 2015 Permalink

Everybody, in their frustration, forgets that this game has absolutely NOTHING to do with how good this team will be in March. We should all know by now that Cal coaches for March and April, not for December. We have the parts to be very good by the end of the year–just need to grow. Skal will improve, murray showed he is a freak, Ullis had a rare bad game and his elbow is still bothering him (notice the arm sleeve). Willis was hurt and unavailable today, marcus lee is starting to become a beast on the boards; we’re gonna be fine folks, just fine.
