Jamal Murray working out for the Timberwolves today

Last week was quite the week for Jamal Murray, from John Calipari telling Andy Katz the Canadian sharpshooter should go first in the NBA Draft to Murray making a record 79 of 100 threes in a workout with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics have the third pick in the Draft, and today, Murray has an individual workout with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have the fifth pick.

Chad Ford’s latest mock draft has Murray going to the Timberwolves at #5, but only if the Celtics don’t pick him up at #3:

Murray could go as high as No. 3. He’s seriously in the mix with the Celtics. If he slides past them, the Wolves will have to take a long look.

His shooting ability would fill a major need and his ability to play multiple positions is a plus. Buddy Hield, Bender and Ellenson are also real options (as are Dunn and Chriss if they are still on the board), but the Wolves would probably be making a mistake if they pass on Murray.

Personally, I’d love to see Murray in Minnesota. Not only would he team up with fellow Cat Karl Towns, it would be yet another step towards the Timberwolves being a powerhouse in 3-5 years. Is there a team in the league right now with more young talent than Rubio, Wiggins, Towns, and potentially Murray?

I’d love Murray to go to the Timberwolves or even the Suns. The dark horse has to be the Lakers, I’m not sure if he’s worked out for them or anything but with Kobe gone there is room for a player to step up. Jordan Clarkson is there and he’s a fine player but when you have the chance to get Jamal Murray to pair in the backcourt with D’Angelo Russel you need to consider it. Especially with how the floor spacing, ball movement, and outside shooting is in the NBA. Russel/Murray backcourt would easily be a top 5 duo in a couple years, maybe even the top duo.

FWIW: I listen to a Minnesota sports talk station on the ‘Net. [I lived there for 20 years and know the sports scene up there and am still interested.] There are folks on those shows that think that Rubio is a huge waste of time/energy and would *love* to have someone else at point. [From what I can pick up, Rubio is offense-only.] So I would love to see Murray go there; if he does I might have to get a Wolves shirt. 🙂 (It would be nice to have a reason to root for the Wolves again — before Towns was drafted, not much there for me to like.)
