Jamal Murray considered best small forward in college basketball

jamal-murray

Never mind the fact he entered college basketball as a point guard, Jamal Murray is considered the best small forward in America, according to at least one college hoops website.

The Sporting News ranked Murray No. 1 on its Top 10 Small Forwards List, released this morning on its website. Murray beat out Duke’s Brandon Ingram, Wayne Selden of Kansas, Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine and North Carolina’s Justin Jackson, among many others, for the top spot.

The rankings are part of The Sporting News‘s position-by-position top tens being released throughout the week. The ten best point guards were named on Monday, and Kentucky’s Tyler Ulis made the list at No. 7.

The top power forwards will be ranked tomorrow, followed by the centers on Friday. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the Wildcats on the site.

The red duct work is scheduled to be painted a different color before the 2016 2017 season per Rupp Arena website included in the 15 million dollar renovation bundle. The ribbon boards were the first step of the renovations.

Other improvements will include the installation of new venue video production equipment bringing the venue video system to an HD level and replacing the four corner LED screens with HD state of the art screens in a 16X9 aspect ratio. This will be completed during December between UK games so fans will experience the upgrades as they occur. The LED courtside scorer’s table display will be replaced some time during the upcoming season.

Other improvements scheduled over the next 12 months include replacing the video display in the Rupp Arena lobby and the exterior LED Marquis signs that hang on the Hyatt Regency hotel at Broadway and W. Vine and Broadway and High St.

The center-hung audio/video scoreboard will be installed during the summer of 2016 and completed in time for the 2016-17 UK Men’s basketball season. Upgraded Wi-Fi will also be installed before the 2016-17 season as well as improvements to the roof’s steel support structure. Upgrades to the roof structure are needed as concerts and other productions have increasingly gotten larger and heavier. In order to continue to attract major concert and family show productions it is necessary to increase the show load capacity for hanging production equipment.

Additionally, the sports lighting used for basketball games will be replaced with LED fixtures which are far more energy efficient. Also, the HVAC ducts and structural support towers, currently red in color, will be cleaned and repainted a different color.

There is no way there are six point guards in college basketball who are better than Tyler Ulis.

      1 – Melo Trimble (Maryland)
      2 – Yogi Ferrell (Indiana)
3 – Demetrius Jackson (Notre Dame)
4 – Fred VanVleet (Wichita State)
      5 – Kris Dunn (Providence)
6 – Marcus Paige (North Carolina)

Yup six better. love Ulis but there is always a bigger fish, and in this case 6..Sorry. He is still a great player and glad we have him.

None of those guys are a better point guard than Tyler.

Hmm, you must be smoking something. Ulis is probably the best floor general UK has ever had. His ability to make the right decisions, weave in and out of traffic, crazy passes, and shooting ability are why. He will end up in UK record books. Not to mention, he is the only pg under Cal who has not struggled to grasp what he wants them to do. Wall, Knight, Teague, Andrew…they all struggled. Ulis is naturally unselfish. People underestimate him because of his height, but he will be an NBA pg.

Let’s not be homers here. Ullis is not as good as Marcus Paige or Trimble.

Trimble…..that’s the guy that Jamal Murray took to school in the Pan Am games, correct? Murray, who’s never played a college game, correct?

I’m probably in the minority here but this is bit ridiculous. Murray is a PG who will play PG and SG for UK this season. I would also argue that the SF position is a major weakness for the cats this season and our “small ball” lineup will struggle to guard other elite SF’s. In theory the idea of small ball is great but not ideal. GS warriors in the NBA are the exception not the rule.

I think Matthews has a hell of a chance to be a good SF. It might be mid season before he starts really balling, but I think it happens.

This article is funny, especially considering it came from TSN!?!
Are they gonna say he is the best #3, AND the top #2??? I will say he and Skal should fight it out for POY award! Ulis will be one of the top 2-3 PG’s

Murray and matthews are big and atheltic enough to play sf in college. The other players length and athleticism will be able to cover it up if we run into a team with a legit 6’8/6’9″ sf. Those are few and far between in college.

Well we are going to see one (a 6’9 SF) third game of the season against probably our toughest opponent and biggest game outside the tournament. (Duke)

To beat duke we MUST play a lineup of
    PG Ulis
    SG Murray
    SF Poythress
    PF Lee
    C Skal
dont believe me? just watch…… let Poy handle the much younger ingram and ulis will expose thorton and we are in the drivers seat

Ingram is scrawny. No way he could handle Poythress.

i dont think matthews can handle ingram especially because hes 6’9 , but i think later in the game he wouldnt be a drop off of defensive talent from poythress after he gets use to the game flow so ingram wouldnt have an easy game against us

For anyone who didn’t watch the pan am games, Murray made Melo Trimble his bit*h. If you believe Ulis is a better POINT GUARD than Murray, then he’d be a better one than Trimble. And I think Trimble is very good. As far as lineups go…any lineup that has Alex anywhere but the 4 is not our best. He’s far less effective playing the 3. Sometimes a smaller guy can really bother you. I always hated playing against very short guards like Ulis. And in the final four, Dekker killed Willie, Karl, Trey, etc…when Aaron Harrison was switched on him, he slowed down a bit. Id start with Murray on Ingram and adjust as needed. Matthews or Willis may have to try their hand at Ingram. They’re the only 2 perimeter guys we have with comparable size. Matthews is shorter but a much better defender. Willis isn’t known for defense but has the height. If he’s going to plsy, he’ll eventually have to learn to defend at some point anyway.

Who people think are the best players in the nation any position is personal choice, therefor getting everyone to agree would be very unlikely. The thing that I would never do is think that I could put together a better starting lineup than Couch Cal. I have my opinion but I’ll leave player management to Cal.
