ICYMI: Kentucky will have more McDonald’s All-Americans next year than every current NBA team except one

2014 McDonald's All-Americans

In case you missed it, an extraordinary statistic has been floating around the Internet all weekend: With the announcement of the Harrison twins’ decision to return for their sophomore seasons, Kentucky will have nine former McDonald’s All-Americans on its roster next season– more than every other team in the NBA this year besides the Charlotte Bobcats, who have the same number.

Yahoo! Sports released a breakdown of each individual team:

Of Kentucky’s league-best 21 former players in the NBA, 12 were one-time McDonald’s All-Americans. As you can see, the Los Angeles Lakers– the team for which Calipari was once rumored to leave the Wildcats– currently has only 5. Need I say more?

Throw in the fact that WCS wasn’t a burger boy and starts to get scary

uhm… yea… not scared. At all. our incoming class is much better than yours. WCS is a joke. the twins are WAY overrated (Only get a few good shots a game, wont save you when the score is way high). your best players (randall and young) are leaving. UK will still be young and be the same disconnected team it has been. you guys will have another greater than 10 loss season and will be a cake walk to any team with experience.
In case you havent noticed yet, being a burger boy doesn’t transfer into being a good college player. There are going to be plenty of teams that will walk over UK next year

Yeah, totally a cake walk for those teams that went down to UK in the tournament.

In case you haven’t noticed yet, these guys who are jokes and overrated just went to the national title game with one year less experience.

I mean, maybe you weren’t there all of march and april. UK was. And UK will be once again in 14-15.

But in still yet you have the nerve to sit here and say duke will be way better. That is laughable. But yall will be good. Tyus is pretty even ulis no matter how you cut it. Ulis can hold his own. And the twins will be better come next season. Trust! I’m not saying duke will be a** water I’m saying, ok I’m saying duke will be a** water…. lol we will be able to sub who we want n I think that will wear a lot of ppl out…

not exactly a glowing recommendation for McD’s AAs but point given. Charlette has struggled but they are in the playoffs

True; if anything, this shows that being a McDonald’s AA does not necessarily translate into being an NBA player.

    • JHK
      12:27 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

There’s only about 20 McD’s AA a year and every team in the NBA has several of them (except one).

There’s no doubting how much more of a chance it gives you to play in the NBA.

It shouldn’t reflect poorly on the McDonald’s All-American selection process at all. Look at the number of Mickey D’s guys in the league. 146!!!! That is incredible.

    • Wow...
      12:24 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

Better get ready for some failure then….
This 40-0 talk better not start up again. We lost our best players this season.. honestly there isn’t much to say about any of them returning besides ONE of the twins makes a good shot sometimes when it is needed… but that only works when a game is close. its a gamble. We are still a VERY young team.

      12:33 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

40-0 ain’t happening. Never will a college basketball team go undefeated for an entire season again. In this day and age with the incessant media coverage, the pressure would be too much for any team.

      12:43 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

I hate when ppl say we lost our best players. All of our new guys just jumped up to top 25. Karl anthony towns is no 2 overall from what I’ve seen in new rankings. He can do it all. The kid will fill that scoring void and rebounding void. Trey lyles will be a good rebounder. Booker will be a better shooter when its all said and done. N ulis oh my goodness ulis. Love that kids game. I’m telling you when he comes in the game the game will change to a different style and the defenses are goung to have ro constantly adjust. Thats hard on a defense… Any defense!! And the defense will be another level I think this yr. These guys want to play together from day one. Like cal said the younger guys have bought in already. He has a whole lot to be happy about…Haters need to heed the warning. Cause its gonna get real, real quick… what tend to know about the haters is that they tend to not a lot about bball because they never played a lick of organized ball in their lives. So I pay no attention to wack trolls who come on here and talk basketball. Have a great summer haters. Cause its gonna be a long basketball season. As MR. T.O would say ” GETCHA POPCORN READY!!!!!

    • pr
      12:53 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

Yea silly to talk forty and 0. But to say this team is still very young is silly to. Whole starting five is soph and juniors that’s if cal starts cauley and dakari together. Sounds like that’s what he might do. Is start piythress at the three since he wants him to learn to play there. Then you four would be cauley stein. But remains to be seen. We will be deep in every position. This is what every college team wanted. They wanted the one and done gone. Its gone!, now we are about to see just how much they are happy about it. Be careful what you ask for…

      1:16 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

I’m not saying a team can’t go undefeated anymore, but it’s extremely unlikely no matter how talented the team. The three-point line has changed the game and really is the great equalizer. If one team is drilling three pointers, it’s hard to beat no matter how good you are.

    • Han
      1:42 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

While the returnees and summer exhibition games will be a major help in starting the year better, let’s not talk about going undefeated until we’ve beaten Florida in conference play.

I’m so glad we have those guys, and can’t wait to see them in blue and white… but they’re too damn skinny. They need to spend their summer training like they’re on the football team.Eat… Lift… Eat… Lift… Eat… Lift… all the way until the season starts.

Well of course… all of that goes without saying. They are basketball players. Was just suggesting… that, in addition to playing lots of basketball, they should work hard at putting some meat on those bones. It never hurts to be bigger, faster, and stronger… regardless of what sport you play.

Mr. Duke fan, where was Duke while UK was playing in the Championship game? Sitting at home on their couch watching it on TV. When was the last time Duke was in the final four? Next year Duke will have the freshmen and get crushed while UK steam rolls everybody!

  11. Han
    1:41 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

As much as I’m happy we’re getting great recruits, let’s not forget that guys who in no way deserve the distinction regularly end up in that game because they’re going to Duke or UNC. I seem to recall a guy ranked at least in the 40s in the game a couple years ago for that reason.

Also, Matt said Duke will have that many, too, so let’s not let the media forget that if/when Duke flounders next year. UK caught hell the last two years when our star freshmen underperformed. Duke, UNC, Kansas and UCLA have comparatively avoided criticism for bad years with great recruiting classes.

And don’t forget John Wall wasn’t a burger boy.

My first thought was that this stat mostly says that being a McDonald’s All-American doesn’t mean that much. But here’s a question: I wonder if you consider only the NBA players who played high school ball in the U.S. (the only ones eligible), what percentage were McDonald’s all Americans. Anyone know? That would tell us a lot about how relevant it is.
