How the end of the Kentucky/Indiana series turned Dan Dakich into the biggest troll of all time

The news that Dan Dakich will help Brad Nessler call the UK/LSU game tomorrow night has sent sales of the SportsSync radio skyrocketing this afternoon.  Dakich has become quite the household name around these parts over the last three years thanks to his combative interview skills and troll-like tendencies, especially where Kentucky, John Calipari, and the “KSR fanboys” are concerned.

Before we all turn down the sound and turn up Tom Leach, let’s take a look at Dakich’s history with the Kentucky fan base, and figure out why in the world ESPN assigned him to this game.

December 6, 2011:  Dakich first popped up on KSR’s radar when he said he didn’t believe it would be an upset if Indiana beat #1 Kentucky in Assembly Hall.  We immediately asked him to be a guest on the radio show to explain that statement.

December 7, 2011:  Dakich came on the radio show in what may be one of the most awkward interviews in KSR history (and that’s saying a lot).  Dakich said he didn’t think Indiana beating Kentucky would be an upset because Indiana beat Cornell two years prior.  Huh?  Other odd moments: Dakich claimed he doesn’t speak with Indiana fans everyday (yet he hosts a daily radio show in Indianapolis), receives emails telling him he’s “bitter and angry,” doesn’t need a “dot com guy, a poll or Vegas” to tell him what he sees, and doesn’t care who wins certain games. Dakich was oddly defensive and combative throughout the interview, making it very difficult to follow him.

April 2012:  After Kentucky beat Indiana in the Sweet 16 and went on to win the National Championship, Dakich was surprisingly complimentary of the Cats.  Now, that could be because they had just won the National title, thereby making any criticism difficult and incredibly petty, but let the record state that Dakich praised Cal for getting a young team to play at a championship level.  I bring this up to emphasize the shift in Dakich’s view of Calipari from then to now.

May 3, 2012:  The Kentucky/Indiana series officially ends because Indiana refuses to play neutral site games, and Kentucky refuses to play a home-and-home series after the chaos of the court storming in Bloomington when the Hoosiers upset beat the Cats.  Somewhere in Indianapolis, a mega troll was born.

September 14, 2012:  Dakich claimed Trey Lyles visited UK during a dead period, which would be a recruiting violation.  If you’ll remember, Lyles used to be committed to Indiana before reopening his recruitment and committing to UK. Lyles’ father, T.Lyles, called Dakich’s accusations “ridiculous” and “untrue,” and wanted to know why the radio host would put something like that out there.  Sour grapes…

March 20, 2013:  After UK lost to Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT, Dakich seized the opportunity to mock the Cats and their incoming recruiting class:

I’d love to see him answer this tomorrow night.

June 28, 2013:  This doesn’t pertain to Dakich’s feelings about the Cats, just his hypocrisy in general.  One of Dakich’s favorite pastimes is bashing the media, even though he himself is a media member.  When Tony Adragna, an aspiring sports broadcaster and graduate of IU’s sports communication program, called Dakich out on twitter for his hypocritical media bashing during one of his shows, Dakich went off on him, and after Adragna emailed him to apologize, Dakich went one step further, threatening to blackball him from the business.  After Adragna wrote a blog post about it, Dakich backtracked and invited him to be on his show.  What is this guy’s problem?

December 14, 2013: In an interview with Jerry Tipton, Dakich said that the Kentucky/Indiana series is too important to let die, and blamed both Calipari and Tom Crean for its demise.  In fact, he said Cal not wanting to play in Bloomington because it’s too dangerous is a “load of crap”:

“He’s giving me the load of crap that it’s too dangerous,” Dakich said of Calipari’s objections to Bloomington. “Which is crap. Some Playboy girl (Megan Dills) got her ankle hurt. Big deal.”

Apparently Dakich has something against Megan Dills, whom he later referred to as a “pretend Playmate.”  Larry Vaught is outraged.

January 8, 2014:  After Calipari got in a jab at IU on his radio show about disrespecting opponents by storming the court, Dakich’s anger with Cal boiled over into full-fledged Twitter diarrhea.  Dakich posted several tweets about Cal, aka “the baby Baron,” being too scared to play at Assembly Hall:

And this is the guy they chose to work tomorrow night’s game?   Can’t Jimmy get in his jet and fly down instead?  I’m sure Dakich would much rather call Missouri/Arkansas.

So why did ESPN assign Dakich to cover the Cats?

The same reason Bobby Knight has called UK games in the past: they know it will create a stir. Just like ESPN knows Kentucky fans will stay up for the late games, they know they’ll watch Dakich, and if he does get in a jab at the Cats, explode about it on social media.  Even the Worldwide Leader trolls sometimes.

Will you take the bait, or turn the sound down and radio up tomorrow night?

When Indiana was playing Wisconsin the other night, he also offered that “Vonleh was just as good, if not better, than Randle and Embiid”.

He’s a joke. Treat him as such.

Dan is such a media ho. All he wants is to get attention from UK fans. The more we complain to him the more he likes it. You can’t win with idiots. Besides he talks about being scared to play at Assembly Hall….Bib Knight played more regular season games at neutral sites than he did at either Rupp or Assembly. Why? Because he got scared of playing at Rupp. Many of those games Dan either played in it helped coach. He like Knight got bitter due to all the losses he suffered at the hands of the Wildcats. He isn’t worth the time to tweet and complain. What would really shock him is of he didn’t get any angry tweets for UK fans tomorrow. Will never happen but wil oils be funny if it did.

Great article, and you’re spot on when talking about ESPN. They know exactly what they’re doing by having him call the game. Think about this: would ESPN ever have the audacity to slate an announcer who is universally known to be outspoken against Coach K and Duke? Someone who never misses a chance to publicly denounce or discredit his coaching style and the fans of Duke? Absolutely not. They wouldn’t dare. I hope the Big Blue Nation blows up ESPN on social media tomorrow night for their obvious trolling. Watch the game, but #BoycottDakich.

Download the uk athletics app and they have the IMG stream of the game. It’s about 3o secs behind. Just pause your tv 30 secs and they should be just about dead on. I had to do it during the Baylor game – makes it so much better than listening to fools that know very little other than what’s on the sheet in front of them.

Dakich is doing a disservice to the NCAA and to potential recruits by not getting back into coaching and bestowing his vast bball knowledge to lead a program, don’t you think? During our 2012 season I started muting the TV for all the games and they became much more enjoyable. This season I purchased the sportsync radio and I listen to Tom and Mike while watching the game. I only consider about 5 color commentators worth listening to and appear unbiased. Dakich is at he top of the list of biased and inept commentators, him being assigned to our game after he has been spewing garbage in the Big Ten all season is just another reason why ESPN has become biased and pathetic. Buy the sportsync radio and avoid any more additional aggravation, trust me the officiating will provide enough stress. Go coach a team Dakich so we can schedule and drill you every chance we get!

Following a great Christmas gift I can listen to Tom & Mike call it while watching on TV. Check out RadioInSync. You purchase a cable that allows you to connect FM to your iphone / ipad and computer speakers and then download their app from itunes. This allows you to delay the radio to match the action on TV. I have directv and have delayed the radio broadcast by up to 25 seconds. It works perfectly; zero complaints. I love no longer having to listen to Jimmy Dykes & similar talk about their new baseline ‘should cam.’

As much as I can’t stand Dickich, I fully support UK playing IU every year on home courts. I’ve been following the Cats since I was 10 years old in 1978 and IU is the most loathsome of rivals. We need to play the Hoosiers every year, period. It’s too good a tradition to ignore and the media will eventually put IU in their place when Kentucky consistently whips them over time. We need to embrace this rivalry and play in Lexington & Bloomington. Mix in a game in Indy and Louisville every 5 years or so.
Come on Cal and Mitch- make this happen! We can’t beat IU if we don’t play IU.

I honestly don’t blame Cal for not wanting Home and Home with IU. IU fans would storm the court even if they were ranked #1 and UK not ranked, and they do not act with class and are dangerous to opposing fans, players and coaches. Play IU at neutral sites and I am fine with it.

Just go to Bote’s Radio Delay page and download “RadioDelay” . It’s FREE and it works. Just run a wire from the radio’s earphone jack to the microphone input on your computer, dial up 10, 20 seconds or whatever delay you need, then listen to the computer’s earphone jack. OR run a wire from the earphone jack to your other radio. or DVR. I RECORD the ESPN or CBS feed from the Dish Hopper, at the same time I watch the game through a DVR and feed in the Tom Leach call. I get the game both ways that way.

It’s FREE and there are no spy bugs or spam or whatever. I’ve been using it for several years now, and it’s never failed me. They also have have a 180 second delay version – the Notre Dame game last year had a 40 second delay to it. ( Maybe they sere sendiig it to the Vatican for support first. Seemed to help.)

Any way, try it – it works.

When the UK-IU series was called off, I must admit that I was very disappointed that two of the heavyweights of the game would not be playing each other. However, a few years down the road, I have discovered that I really do not miss playing IU and their disrespectful troll fans one bit. When you play a team so downtrodden as IU, you really have nothing to win and everything to lose. I would prefer to continue to fill our schedule with programs that I cannot stand, yet respect, such as Michigan State, Kansas, the Dukies, UNC and other truly respected programs. Indiana is starting to become the new UCLA. Were they great once? Of course, but they really have not been nationally relevant since Bobby Knight left. It is almost pathetic to see how desperate Indiana is to play UK, because they know that they NEED UK to in order to give themselves legitimacy in the ranks of the blue-bloods. But here’s a news flash to them, WE DONT NEED YOU, ACCEPT OUR TERMS OR BEAT THE PAVEMENT.

Dakich is too stupid to realize no matter what he does or says, he will always be loser, no one is going to love or respect him, IU will still be a joke, and we will still be UK. I’ve been watching UK since the late 70s and the rivalry has never been the same since Knight left IU. They are not even on the same level as UK anymore in my book. I don’t blame Cal for not wanting to play at Assembly Hall. I guess the NCAA won’t do anything to stop court storming until someone gets trampled to death. I would rather play a marquee game against a quality opponent in a large media market venue than to go to IU. That’s what helps drive recruiting people! Not playing at a dingy old arena in the middle of nowhere Bloomington. Young recruits would much rather play in big games in NY, Atlanta, Dallas, or LA than in Bloomington. It’s one of those things for UK bball: if we do play them and we win, we were supposed to win! And if we lose, they make commercials about it being a huge upset and it looks bad on us. Why schedule that game?

I sat next to Dakich on a flight this year. The guy was extremely nice and we talked about the IU and Uk series. His bashing of the media, Cal and UK through twitter is pretty immature. Would be great if Cal called him out tomorrow….

Screw Dan Dikich. Gonna be great for him to have to sit there and watch UK win knowing he’s hating it every second.

Don’t watch the game on ESPN. Lets see how bad we can make their ratings.

DD is awful. First he is a KY hater, even taking a shot at Ky during the last Big Ten game he announced. Worst of all..he never shuts up..talking continuously while calling a game. So annoying..I turn down the sound.

    “Complimentary” not complementary……………………………………
as in “UK fans are not very complimentary of Dakich’s bouchebaggery although it is embraced by IU fans.”

Sorry to be the edit police just trying to help…….

Why is it that if you put a twitter account in the hands of a middle-aged man, he morphs into a 13-year old girl online? Grow up, Dakich.

Gotta love that Dakich cries about vulgarity and calling other people classless, yet called Matt Jones a “douchebag” on the air two weeks ago. Nice work ESPN-real professional.

Wait, making fun of the media, calling out how bad local media is, and saying “I’m not in the media,” who are we talking about again? Oh wait, someone hiding behind blog, a wanna be Howard Stern. Your blogger is so controversial and tough…..

Coach Crean gave his reason for NOT playing in Indianapolis as they “would have trouble getting their students down there”. They played Notre Dame in Indy this year. Has any one asked Tom or Dakich to explain that?

I kinda enjoyed the last IU/UK game on a college campus (who wouldn’t), but I now agree with most UK fans: college teams should play each other on college campuses, and UK under Cal is NOT a college basketball team. Calipari has not had one single recruit of his in the last eight years obtain a college degree. Highly touted basketball players? Yes. COLLEGE basketball players? Nope.

IU should only play college teams, not UK’s pro-developmental team.

PS: Dakich’s rants stick especially well because they are overwhelmingly true. Save for one girl’s twisted ankle, there was absolutely no harm, either intentional or accidental, from that game’s fantastic celebration.

Jarrod Polson? Eloy Vargas? Twany Beckham? Julius Mays? (i think). You didn’t say Cal doesn’t have ELITE talent graduate, you just said he has not 1 single recruit gain his degree. I forgot Eric Gordon, Cody Zeller and Noah Vonleh will have all graduated by the end of the season

Neither Polson, Vargas, Mays, nor Beckham were John Calipari scholarship recruits. Yes, the walk-ons tend to graduate, as do the one year grad transfers. John Calipari scholly recruits at Memphis and now at UK do not get a college degree (and UMass was his biggest academic disaster).

Eric Gordon was a Kelvin Sampson IU player; same non-college oriented type coach…same problem! Vonleh’s still at IU and probably won’t stay four. He is an outlier, and is not an entire roster of kids that have no intention of completing a college education like Cal’s scholly players. Cody Zeller? He was a 1st team Academic All-American last year at a top business school that is really close to a degree (within a few semesters) after 2 years and three double summer sessions. You can be darn sure he will graduate, with honors. Oladipo? Early entry and top five pick with a degree.

I am a Kentucky fan and have been all my life. That being said, I am embarrassed by Matt Jones and his self promotion. He called Dan Dakich on his radio show today and though I have no admiration for Dan Dakich or anything Indiana, Matt managed to come across as the total arse. He interrupted, accused, challenged and unprofessionally resorted to personal attacks during the interview. People thank Matt frequently, for all he does for the fan base, Matts motivation is self promotion, ratings and contoversy which keeps his name front and center and provides him with leverage for pay increases during future contract negotiations. Matt doesn’t have the big blue nation as the prime motivation for what he does, Matt is all about self promotion. It is obvious that Matt is willing to embarrass Kentucky and our fans just for attention. What is even more concerning is that he refuses to take responsiblity for his missteps. He has a very general limited knowledge of basketball, but speaks as if he were an expert. He stated that this years team would blow everyone away, the best team ever assembled, without tempering his expectations and hype with the caveat that a young team will take time to develop, This team is ever evolving and growing and I believe they may be great by years end but Matt won’t own what he said early on. I love Kentucky and big blue nation but I am discouraged when I see a representative of a proud fan base, make us all look like fools, for no reason other than his own ego and self promotion override the best interest of the proudest sports fanbase in existence, BBN,
