They are calling it “The Miracle at Male,” and if you haven’t seen the video of this impressive clutch shot, you got to see it to believe it.
Friday evening, the clock was ticking down as Male High School in Louisville was trying desperately to put up some last minute points against St. Xavier during a tied game.
As the Male boys basketball team raced down the court for one last shot to win it all, the ball was deflected toward midcourt and the chances of Bulldog’s edging out a win dwindled.
Cue Alex Cook, a top candidate for Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball, who scrambled from the top of the key and heaved a gutsy half court shot at the basket as the buzzer sounded.
Amazingly, he nailed it, clinching a 65-62 victory for his team and some court-storming from fans.
“That’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime ending,” said Willie Feldhaus, Cook’s coach, about the game-winning shot.
While the buzzer-beater is impressive, I’m hoping Cook is still alive after the crushing he probably received from the swarm of fans eager to congratulate the hero of the night.
