Herald-Leader reader blasts UK players for autograph tours

For some reason, my sister and brother-in-law still get the Herald-Leader, so I leafed through it this morning while I drank my morning tea. After reading Merlene Davis’ column announcing her retirement, I found this letter to the editor from Mike Downs blasting the UK players headed for the draft–the “Sayonara Seven,” according to him–for making money off their autograph tours. Check out the entire letter above.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but I wonder if Downs realizes how much money the university and the NCAA made off the “Sayonara Seven” this season. Probably enough to buy Mother Harrison as many cars–any make or model–as she could ever want.

Sorry “douche” would be the correct spelling — damn tiny keyboard.

Really shows how dull and boring bb news is, when items that appeared 2-3 weeks ago are reprinted.

BBall news IS quite boring this time of year but you may wish to keep up…this was printed in the May 24, 2015 Lexington Herald Leader; Letters to The Editor, online and print editions.

You may be slightly confused, as the Owensboro paper printed a letter several weeks ago that. expressed similar sentiments.

Regardless, Mike Downs gets to wear the Captain-of-the-Douche-Canoe hat for the holiday weekend. Well earned.

This is probably the same troll that signed his name as a MD a few weeks ago. I highly doubt these are UK fans writing these. If a UK fan truly feels this way then they are greedy and selfish. The fact that people in this world don’t want the best for someone, especially a kid, is unbelievable.

Unreal! You call a man greedy that doesn’t wish to give $20 to a kid that has been famous the past year and will be a multi millionaire in a few months? I would just assume to contribute that $20 to the disabled veterans fund or my local church…but that’s just me! I guess we all got our different heros.

While I think he was a bit hyperbolic and corny in his delivery, mike downs is correct in having disdain for the autograph tour. I think they’re a pretty gross cash grab. Traveling to small towns and charging big money for signatures given to overwhelmingly not-rich people is very unseemly. It’s not illegal, it’s not TERRIBLE, it’s not the end of the world but it is very very uncool.

If 25 bucks is big money either (A) need to not go to the autograph or (B) need a new career path. Either way it’s optional to attend. If someone goes then obviously that person thought it was worth 25 dollars since it’s always posted in advance. The only people who don’t think they should make money off them are just jealous…..end of story

Not one player MADE anyone go to these. People who did made the choice and how many of these so called poor people you talk about do we see smoking cigs at $5 a pack and a couple packs a day. At least they got something that won’t kill them and they will have for a while. Most of these autographs we working people paid for anyways.

The second tallest team in the NBA or college was out rebounded by an inferior team. Rebounding is about hustle and effort. Dennis Rodman, Faried, etc. Jones can keep saying the season was a success, but it wasn’t. The 1 will always be bigger than the 38 and when the team was punched in the mouth on the games biggest stage, they folded. I don’t fault the players for taking the money they can get, but why would you want the autograph to begin with?

People paying for these autographs (and this guy complaining) has absolutely zero relevance to what the university “makes” off these kids.

We buy the merchandise, we buy the tickets, we pay for parking and we buy things from the vendors…

As long as we keep doing the above, all of this will continue. Period.

Looks like Louisville fans are so butt-hurt, they’ve taken to writing whining, troll hater drivel to a dying source of media, hoping it will somehow change the state of things. 🙂

Sad, these folks….. Their tears taste so sweet.

It’s not like these tours have never happened before. Plus people know it costs money to get an autograph and picture, so let them spend their money how they want to. Also what’s 25 bucks for a Towns autograph right now, when that will mostly likely be worth more in 5/10 years.

Autographs used to be free to show appreciation for the fanbase and $25 is 2% of my SSI. Pay if you want but from here, its a ripoff period!!!

Dear Mrs. T, We love you but your off base on this one. UK & NCAA are making all that money and we, the fans, pay out the nose for everything related to our beloved CATS! Just because you can afford to live the good life in Nashville, Tn. and go everywhere with the Cats doesn’t mean we all can. Us poor fans would appreciate some scraps occasionally, so give us a break or a couple of tickets so I can take my son and daughter to a game. lol

Hey Mike Downs, let me guess, you are a liberal right? The world owes you nothing; these players owe you nothing. They don’t owe you more years of basketball. They don’t owe you their autograph. Mike, it’s time for you to be a man. Everyone has to grow up sometime.

They should have signed for free, as this was a great opportunity for a lot of young kids to get the autographs of the players they love. They are all going to be millionaires very soon so the money should not have been the point of going around and signing but rather an opportunity to connect with the fans who loved watching them play one last time. Everyone has a choice, and mine was to not pay it.

Free? Would you spend 4-6 hours of time traveling to/from and dealing with hundreds of people “just to be nice”? These kids don’t owe anyone anything and didn’t HAVE to do any of them. Reminder that final exams were either coming up or in progress when these were occurring.
