Hamidou Diallo is Invited to the NBA Combine

Shooting guard Hamidou Diallo received an invitation to the NBA Combine, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reports.  Diallo is the fifth Wildcat to receive an invitation, joining Malik Monk, Isaiah Briscoe, De’Aaron Fox and Bam Adebayo.

The No. 1 ranked shooting guard in the 2017 class came to Kentucky a semester early in January, but never saw any game action.  Diallo’s draft projections vary, seen by many as a fringe first rounder in the 2017 draft, or a lottery pick in 2018.

The NBA Combine is May 9-14 in Chicago.  Diallo has not hired an agent.  He will have until May 24 to decide if wants to go pro or suit up for Kentucky next year.

Not gonna lie…I was selfishly hoping he wouldn’t get invited, but now I just hope he receives good advice/feedback, then decides to play next year. If he leaves, not only will it be a huge blow to the Cats for next season, but it could start a bad trend for future players looking for the fastest route to the NBA. People thought 1-and-Done was bad; None-and-Done will be a disaster.

I do enjoy having STARS in the NBA, but this diallo ordeal sucks!

Why? At no cost to kentucky we had (and still do) have a chance to enlist a really talented player. If he doesn’t play for kentucky, it cost UK literally nothing. A scholarship that wasn’t going to be used for half a semester. If he does come back and play, UK gets a really talented player.

I really don’t get the angst that some have over Diallo possibly going pro. If he has an opportunity to do so, great. Again, there was zero cost to kentucky. Literally the “worst” possible outcome for the university of kentucky is that it didn’t cost the university a thing. A possibility of “winning” with no possibility of losing doesn’t sound like such a horrible situation to me…

I have no ill will against diallo. I would have done the same thing. I just dislike the system I guess. Like the aforementioned post, I am just not really looking forward to the none and done now!

People are mad about the opportunity cost. If he chooses to go directly to the NBA we lost the #1 sg in the country for next season and the ability to recruit another top sg in his place.

Would you rather have the #1 player and him not play a minute or the #2 player and him play a season?

      Exactly!

You have zero proof there is zero cost to UK. First of all, you shouldn’t be on an athletic scholarship if you aren’t going to play. Second, you have no idea if him on the roster affected other recruits decision. It isn’t unreasonable at all to think it could have. That’s 2 obvious “costs” IF he were to go pro.

The past team had a dip when Diallo arrived (chemistry may have been effectes slightly) and a player like Knox or Johnson may have already committed, had it not been for Diallo. This is Caliparis risk and his fault if the risk dors not reward. Saying there is no losing in the scenario Diallo goes pro, is not true. Also since 1 and done came out, Diallo should go pro and not risk injury. If Diallo stays he is a gambler, no risk if you are playing for money next year.

The only guards to make decisions since diallo committed to uk are baker(uk got) and smith (uk didn’t but diallo had already declared so it’s highly unlikely his decision was swayed). All other major guards had already committed elsewhere when diallo committed. Therefore the idea that uk missed on the #2 guard because of diallo is silly. UK lost nothing.

He gone! I wished he would have played this season if this was the plan, but I understand. He will get some attention at combine and hire an agent.

I think it’s great that he has this opportunity; but in all honesty, his “assumed” presence for next year likely changed our recruiting strategy causing Cal to not go after an additional SG.

I have lost respect for Cal as a coach. Time for Cal to hit the road.

I hope that was sarcasm. These kids’ dream is to play in the NBA not college. And I wish fans would quit saying “us”. Being a fan does not give you special say in anything.

I don’t really care if it was sarcasm or not, Leon is most likely a UofL fan or just a hater. And I am sure Cal will lose sleep knowing Leon has lost respect for him…..I know I will.

I can’t hardly tell the fools from the UL fans, but I guess they are one and the same. Diallo testing draft waters was always the plan. Are you people new to BBN or just uninformed?

It doesn’t matter if it was the plan or not, It’s truly taking advantage of University of Kentucky “brand” and taking advantage of fans also. It’s an insult to fans to have a guy possibly go to the NBA, from the University of Kentucky, which is how it would be announced when he was selected, without even playing an actual game.

    • catsarerunnin

He would have “taken advantage” of another school. Cal took a chance on him in case he decided to play next season. It’s not like it’s a shock or anything that may make himself available for the draft. If Cal had said no to him the whiners here would have complained.

I cant imagine him wanting to leave if only projected 2nd round. If he is as good as advertised then he will get good feedback and go mid to late 1st round and he is gone. However, he isnt the best shooter and that is one thing that could keep him out of the top of this draft. Give it a year and he could go too 15 too 10. I say 70/30 in favor of coming back.

      6:59 pm April 29, 2017 Permalink

30 for 30 says go make that money in the NBA while you can. Why does he stay and risk an injury, when he can play for money next year? If he gets drafted in the 2nd round, he makes a D league team and possibly plays in the league during the last few weeks of the regular season. Good Bye Diallo.

I applaud Cals effort here, but I do not think recruiting players, housing players, coaching players, etc that do not play in games, is a great recruiting strategy long term. Especially when you have a ton of scholarships to fill.

    • maximumscott
      8:22 pm April 29, 2017 Permalink

UK offers more than a Dleague… if your logic follows then he would play more games and risk more injury for 30k a year… if he returns he gets full ride, room board, etc amd plays less physical games with less games on the schedule. P

Congratulations to Coach Cal for finally figuring out how a HS player can take advantage of the Kentucky/Cal name when it comes to the draft without actually having to play in a UK game! Brilliant! This is truly the biggest day in the history of UK basketball!

#HeGone … BBN we are going to have to come to grips that next years team is going to struggle. It is apparent now that we are not going to have Diallo and Shaka is going to beat out Cal for Mo Bamba which will leave us thin on size, thin on experience, and thin in the back court. This might be another NIT year like the Nerlens, Willie, Poythress, Archie year. I say they lose 8 to 10 games just way to many holes to fill.

    • Wilfred Smith
      5:43 am April 30, 2017 Permalink

If Bamba goes to Texas, we have Richards, Washington, Winyard, SKJ, and Gabriel. Then Vanderbilt and ? as wings. Yes Bamba is nice, but hardly a bare cupboard.

    • UKALLDAY1
      12:14 pm April 30, 2017 Permalink

When was the last time Cal didn’t have one 7 footer on the team? There isn’t a true back up center, SKJ is a 4, Wenyen is a 3 and Wynyard sux at basketball and only 3 guards on the roster. Do you honestly think that is a roster that is going to contend for a championship?

I just wonder why he didn’t play ANY? If they’re all pros they better get used to a little rotation. I’m pretty sure that they all understand the game of basketball better than most their age or older. Throwing the number one SG in every once and awhile just to see what happens at least should be a no brainer. Was there any question of his eligibility?

    • timewilltell
      9:04 pm April 30, 2017 Permalink

I agree Collie. Why worry about a year of eligibility when he would never stay 4 years anyway! This whole deal is somewhat fishy! Love Cal. He is da man for the job at U.K. But can’t agree with this move. None N Done is not right at all. We ARE COLLEGE BASKETBALL not Junior D League.

I think what will hurt the most is a guard that would have had “some experience” in Cal’s system leaving and having no one besides wenyan and skj who have any real knowledge.
