Grantland: “The Call of Coach Cal”

John Calipari recently said his 2016 recruiting class at Kentucky could potentially be his best to date. It’s a bold statement from a guy who isn’t projected to land any of the top five prospects, but that’s what makes Calipari brilliant. The brief, offhand remark on an ESPN podcast was the “Call of Coach Cal,” writes Danny Chau of

“He knows we’re listening, and, more importantly, he knows his targets are listening. It doesn’t take a true detective to discover that, with Coach Cal, everything is recruiting. And he has his reasons for campaigning early.”

Chau believes it was a calculated move to draw the attention of the top recruits. Duke is taking over UK’s recruiting throne, so Cal got back in the headlines, as only he can do.

As it stands, Calipari is facing an uphill battle, and maybe he knows it. Maybe the quick podcast shout-out was a subliminal siren song, a passive-aggressive “SCOREBOARD” shout.

I don’t see how you can say Duke is taking over Cal’s recruiting throne, Cal has the the # 1 recruiting class. One good year by Duke doesn’t mean domination!

Grant land seems very anti Cal and UK, so whatever they say carries little weight with me.

Agreed, this narrative about Duke taking over seems based on the media’s wishes. Duke could have the best class next year–maybee–cals had the best class many times. Also we weren’t projected to get Murray either, and he could end up #1 before its over in the lottery.

Im a diehard UK fan but it seems that Coach K gets more out of his players than Cal does. UK should have cleaned house in the tourney….

Yeah. 38-1 and a Trip to the Final Four sure does suck. Too bad Wisconsin was some scrub team, too.

Seriously, where do these people come from?

I would love for UK to have played Gonzaga and Michigan State instead of Notre Dame and Wisconsin in the elite eight and final four. Duke benefited from a much easier tournament schedule.

Ah, the old “I’m a diehard UK fan, but” preface. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My sources confirm that Duke will likely dominate in the Class of 2016 recruiting. We are playing catch-up…

Cal needs to figure out how to keep a couple veterans around (don’t recruit over them) and actually play them to go along with the great freshmen he brings in. If talent alone wins the tourny we would be 6x champs right now. I would take Wiltcher or Lee on this years team over any freshman he recruited this year. Neither may ever play pro ball but I’d take their experience over a freshmen for one year any day of the week.

Could you IMAGINE the beatdowns we’d give to Louisville? As if its not bad enough as it is. :O

Really reality – Duke had a senior laden team and a couple of hyped freshman a couple years ago when they lost to Mercer in the tourney. It just takes a few bad bounces in March madness. It happens. I loved this year. I loved the opportunity for MY Team to write history. More people will remember that game then who won that championship. We were close. It would have been epic and we still loved this years team because of what they did. Cannot wait for this year.

Bad losses like that have not happened under Cal……..we simply lost to a team who with assistance from the refs executed better down the stretch.
