Grad transfer Nate Sestina commits to Kentucky

(Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports)

(Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports)

That didn’t take long. After arriving on campus for his official visit earlier this week, Bucknell grad transfer Nate Sestina has committed to Kentucky. The 6’9″, 245 lbs. forward just announced the news on Twitter:

Sestina averaged 15.8 points (53.6% shooting, 38% from three, 80.8% from the free throw line), 8.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game last year for the Bison and scored in double figures in 27 of his 31 games. He was named Second Team All-Patriot League and was a Patriot League All-Tournament selection.

Kentucky can’t mention Sestina by name until the paperwork’s done, but confirmed the news with a video of a boy watching Reid Travis, another grad transfer, play:

Welcome to the fam, Nate.

OK, so Jack Pilgrim, can we have your thoughts on how this affects our remaining targets? Specifically JMcD

    • BlueByYou
      12:48 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

Not Jack…but my opinion is this. Our remaining targets are not back to the basket beefy type post players. They like to play outside and I do not think this ‘signing’ will scare them one bit. Might actually help as they see that they would not necessarily be put in a true post position. May not get either McDaniels or Hurt….but this should not HURT!

      12:57 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

I believe earlier in the week Jack predicted that UK would get Sestina and that would wrap up the class.

    • WatchutalkinboutWillis
      1:54 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

I’d say with Sestina, Montgomery, Richards and Brooks that will wrap up the bigs. Depending on what 1-3 players leave we might need another grad transfer type guard. But Quickley, Maxey, Allen, Whitney and some combo of Hagans/Herro/Johnson would be a complete class as long as no one transfers and at least one of those three return.

    • BlueByYou
      1:22 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

My ‘OPINION’ is that Cal knows what this guy has the potential to do and I trust he knows more about a guy he’s actually seen versus what we’ve seen in video. I would not have classified Travis as overly athletic and he changed his body, lost some weight and turned out pretty damned good. If this guys comes in and has the same work ethic (which cal must feel like he does) then why can he not be a contributor. Experience is also a factor. I prefer to let it play out and judge the results after we actually see what he can do.

    • lexcatfan2367
      1:24 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

Also, Your opinions on players is invalid until you become the coach. Cal has a specific way he wants to play and you probably aren’t privy to that information.

    • ClutchCargo
      2:03 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

This guy actually moves quite a bit better than Reid Travis, from the videos I have seen, and seems to have a better shooting stroke. I see no downside to picking him up.

But I’m sure the Negative Nancies will be along shortly with all the downside anybody needs, and then some.

So assuming we lose PJ and Keldon to the draft, how does the lineup look next year?

    Hagans
    Maxey
    Herro
    Sestina / Whitney
Montgomery / Junior 1st semester Nick Richards

    ?

Gives us something we don’t have next year a big man that can shoot with range. Nice addition

  14. BeastAtom
    1:11 pm April 4, 2019 Permalink

A win-win! IF those who should stick around for another year actually do stay next year may be the most experienced team Cal has had here. I know that’s a big “if” though. We need a strong athletic rim protector. I like Nick but he is just too foul prone and makes too many silly mistakes. If EJ bulks up over the summer maybe he could be that guy. Maybe we get Matthew Hurt but for some reason I get a feeling we don’t. Do you guys know if we’re recruiting Chol Marial, the 7’1″ guy from Arizona (I think)?
