I have no issue with UK dropping anywhere from 11-20. But how in God’s name can UofL be in the top 10? They have played 1 team that is even remotely respectable and lost. Every other team they have played is a fringe tournament team at best. That should not yield a top 10 ranking. Period. Regardless, I’m taking the cats on Saturday by 7.

because the “statistics” say that since they’ve been blowing out these cupcakes that they “look like” a top 10 team… i say that those statistics do not take into consideration exactly how bad these teams are louisville is playing.

UK fans have got to take stock in this years team and realize that this is a good team but not a great one. The likelyhood of making the final 4 is just beyond the grasp of a team that cannot shoot, rebound, and defend as poorly as these guys do. Cal just does not have the parts and pieces to make a run here. Skal is no where near ready to play college ball and for the life of me cannot figure how he is starting over players who will contribute much more than he can. Alex is so off and on how can you put a lot of faith in him to be the consistent front line player we need. Murray is the one true star on this team and Lee is the best inside man after that the Cats have little to bank on. Lets just hope Cal can work something out to make this team better than just good into very good.

      10:34 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

Not true. There is plenty of time to turn this team around. They showed what they are capable of beating Duke by double figures. Skal will only get better and these young players will eventually figure it out. You can count on Cal to figure it out as well. He has plenty of parts and pieces and will most definitely make a run in March.

Cannot disagree with you more. As long as Skal keeps playing this team is in big trouble.

Why are today’s hosts and even callers acting like Louisville is such a big threat? Even further, they are acting like Duke and Louisville were the games we were most likely to lose during this stretch. I don’t get it. Louisville played good against Michigan State on the road, but so did Florida. Louisville has beaten NOBODY. The Cats will roll Saturday, ESPECIALLY after dropping the Ohio State game. There is NO WAY Cal loses to Louisville at home when Louisville is this bad, especially down one player.

We just lost to Ohio State & UCLA? There’s NO WAY we can lose to Louisville? Have you seen us play yet? Skal looks like a 2-star junior college transfer for crying out loud.

    • BlondeBomber
      10:40 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

Yes, there is NO WAY we can lose to Louisville at home. And we didn’t “just lost to UCLA and Ohio State”. We also blew out a pretty decent Arizona State team which is a lot better than Louisville. Quit jumping off the bridge. Cal will right this ship. If Alex hits his one and one we are probably not even having this conversation.

      10:44 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

Don’t be a delusional fan and think that we are invincible. We can absolutely lose Saturday. Do I think we will? No, I don’t. But that doesn’t mean that we cannot lose. 99% of this fanbase would’ve said that there was no way we lose to Ohio State on Saturday, but it happened. I stand firm that I think the cats win by 7 on Saturday, but we certainly CAN lose.

    • BlondeBomber
      10:54 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

Catsby80, I am not delusional at all. I realize we will probably lose at Kansas, we will likely lose at Vandy, and we will probably drop several more, especially if Skal’s struggles don’t change. If Louisville hadn’t just lost a player and we hadn’t dropped the Ohio State game they may have shocked us, but the fact that we lost to Ohio State just cements the fact that we will beat Louisville. Again, there is NO CHANCE we drop back to back games like that, losing to Scandal U at home. It will not happen.

    • Catsby80
      11:04 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

Well I certainly appreciate your confidence, and I sure hope you’re right. I live in Louisville and I cannot imagine a scenario in which I won’t lose my mind if we lose to them. I cannot stand these birds fans as it is. If they somehow beat us, it will make for a long long year.

I’m not “Jumpin off the bridge” at all. I hung in during the Gilispie years! I’m optimistic about this team…feel really good about them. But if we lost to Louisville, I wouldnt be shocked. BUT, I hope we’re able to play as a team, play aggressive and destroy them!

It’s pretty simple. This UK team, at this point of the season is very very soft. Louisville is a very physical team. The only reason I have any hope is because Cal pretty much always has slick Rick’s number.

Y’all need to chill with the hysteria. Including you, Tyler. You can’t call a loss to a team playing in a SHOWCASE OF TOP PROGRAMS an “embarrassing loss” in any context. Maybe a bad loss, maybe a setback, but embarrassing is losing to Northern Iowa like UNC did. But I don’t see anyone saying UNC sucks and has no chance to make a deep run in March.

    • deltasig41
      10:52 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

Agreed…Anyone watching Ohio State play can tell they have good, athletic players. They’ve lost some head-scratchers and have grossly underachieved to this point, but that wasn’t an “embarrassing” loss. It was a setback. And it was a loss that was largely unexpected. But Ohio State also shot the ball better than they have at any point this season (and not for lack of defense on several of them). When you foul a guy that is 6-21 from the line and he makes both, maybe it just isn’t your day.

That’s the kind of stock I put in that loss. Setback. Learning experience. We’ve got plenty of time. Besides, this season has been weird. St. John’s beats Syracuse, then loses to Incarnate Word. Texas A&M loses to Arizona State, then BLOWS OUT Baylor. Iowa State loses at home to Northern Iowa. There’s been examples like those all over the board. We will take some lumps…We’ll also be fine.

Let’s also not forget that if they didn’t hit 7/12 three pointers in the first half, they would not have won that game either. People make fun of us when we say that other teams shoot lights out against Kentucky and that’s why they win… but it truly does happen ALL THE TIME. some player on every team manages to just go HAM from distance whenever they see blue/white. It sucks but it is what it is.

I love this team and I think they’re going to be fine, but they aren’t by any measure a great team. No power game, poor shooting and ‘matador’ defense doesn’t lead to championships.

I’m not one of those who thinks that Skal is an underachiever, I think he was poorly scouted. Give him another year or two to develop some strength and some back-to-the-basket moves that aren’t the jump hook, and he’s pro material.

Right now, the only pro-ready player on this team is Jamal Murray, and if this team is going to do well, Jamal Murray has to carry them.

parrish is voting on emotion over logic, or he’s just trying to generate clicks. i don’t care where the cat are ranking at the moment, while they work out some things. but, parrish needs to think about where he would have ranked them if the comeback had gotten those few extra points it need to get over the hump. probably no drop. or not more than one or two. 6th or 7th. so, he can’t think the team that came back and lost at the end is 13 to 15 places worse than the same team if they made the same comeback and won.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:35 am December 21, 2015 Permalink

you’re absolutely correct. the fact that we didn’t score those last few points is no reason to drop us 16 spots in any poll… half those teams above us a phonies with 0 good wins. but the only ranking that matters in the one in march. so who really cares at this point. everything til then is just some moron’s opinion…

What i don’t understand about these rankings here is how UNC loses at home to Texas and they beat UCLA and they move up in the polls!! I know that UK lost to two unranked teams but so has UNC and they are in the top ten. I think they should be ranked worse than UK because they lost two unranked teams as well. UK will take care of business on Saturday against our baby brother!! Cal don’t lose to Pitino!! GO UK CATS

  12. BlueDeuce

I think it was a bad loss…Gardner Webb was embarrassing. But, losing to a 5-5 team that might not make the NCAAs (Ohio St. will struggle with their conference schedule and pile up 10+ losses!) is a bad loss no matter how you spin it.

Don’t care much about rankings this time of year other than stay in the top 20 so when you hit your stride in February, you can make your way up to top 8 or even better, top 3 or 4. Seeding is important because of matchups and the higher #1 seed or #2 seed the better the odds of getting the right matchup. Can’t drop from the rankings even in December as it’s near impossible to climb back in and secure a favorable seeding.

Hate to say it, but UK is in a must win situation on Saturday or they will drop from the rankings and looking at a #4 seed at best come tourney time! UofL is ranked top 10 and UK needs to right the ship by beating them. Now, they had an #8 seed and ran to the Final Four a few years back so it’s not impossible but, favorable is much better!

Also…Duke’s loss only makes our win over them that much less important. Duke has no interior either!

Interior play has to improve because teams have the scouting report and will make UK win it from the outside, which to date they haven’t. Shooting will come around I believe but the interior is what I’m worried about. Just no presence in there at all right now. Lee and Poythress are great role players, Skal has talent and skill but can’t do anything because he lacks experience (no AAU or other type of play before UK) and muscle. Humphries has the size and seems to have the skills but defense is terrible. Who knows what the Wynyard brings? We have no dominant interior player this year.

Interesting year for UK hoops…great athletes, talented too…just have to see.

I do not like Patino but he is a very good coach and does a whole lot better than Cal with far less talent. Sure Cal is dominating him but on massive talent alone not on coaching ability. He keeps his teams in the game with really second rate talent.

No he cannot recruit against the likes of Cal and Coach K but his coaching is very good. Look at all the really sorry players he gets and although he may lose is very competitive against just about everyone. How does he do it ? Plain and simple coaching , how can anyone at UK dispute his coaching ability?
