Tonight Kentucky will begin its toughest test to date. This week the Cats will take on the SEC’s top two teams, starting with LSU tonight at 7:00 pm on ESPN2.
The No. 19 Tigers enter Rupp Arena with only one loss in conference play, a one-point heartbreaker against Arkansas. Undefeated through five SEC road games, with three of the wins coming in overtime, last week they took down Mississippi State on the road and defeated Auburn.
One of the most entertaining teams in the SEC, Tremont Waters is a frontrunner for SEC Player of the Year. The shifty point guard averages 15.7 points, 6.1 assists (3rd in the SEC) and three steals per game (1st in SEC). He gets plenty of help from a pair of former UK recruits, small forward Naz Reid (13.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg) and shooting guard Javonte Smart (10.2 ppg).
LSU is the complete package. Once Waters breaks down his defender, defenses completely fall apart, giving the Tigers room to strike. Ashton Hagans is an elite defender, but he will not win every battle against Waters. If UK’s defense does not rotate quickly, the high-scoring Tigers will make them pay. If LSU misses open looks, the nation’s sixth-best offensive rebounding team will find a way to get second chances.
To quote John Calipari, “It should be an absolute war. It’s gonna be a hard, hard game.”
Coach Cal on the Couch?
Hopefully John Calipari got a good night’s sleep after what went down on his call-in show. During one segment, he brought up his wife’s Instagram account. He freely gave her credit for posting high quality content, but insisted that he still takes out the trashcans. “At least once a month I do,” he laughed. I think he still owes her one for February.
How to Watch and Listen
Kentucky opens ESPN’s Super Tuesday slate at 7:00 pm with Karl Ravech, Dick Vitale and Laura Rutledge. If you can’t get in front of a TV, there are a few different ways you can listen to the Voice of the Wildcats:
- AM: 840 WHAS, 630 WLAP
- FM: 98.1 WBUL
- Satellite: XM-190 and Sirius-135
- Online: iHeart Radio
The opening line made no sense at all. Kentucky -9? Come on. I like the Cats as much as anybody, but that’s crazy talk. LSU is legit. Whatever, it’s your money. Spend it as you please. If you prefer over/unders, the total opened at 149.
Prepare on the KSR Pregame Show
Before Kentucky hits the hardwood at Rupp, listen to Matt Jones and the KSR crew preview the matchup between the Cats and the Tigers at KSBar. All of the action begins on 630 WLAP or online at 4:30 pm.

A Stereotype-Shattering Athlete
Bulldogs are lazy, they said. A bulldog doesn’t belong on an agility course, they told him. They were wrong.
