Kentucky’s road to a ninth National Championship begins tonight when the SEC Tournament Champions take the Taco Bell Arena court against the Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions, Davidson.

Each team enters on a hot streak.  Davidson has won eight of their last nine and Cal’s Cats have won seven of their last eight.  Experts will give you plenty of reasons to believe Kentucky could fall, but since he’s arrived at UK, John Calipari has never lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and has only lost to one non-Power Five opponent. Conversely, Davidson has advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament just once in their last eight appearances.

A Popular Upset Pick

Picking a 12-seed to upset a five is hardly bold.  This year, many have eyed this match-up of Wildcats as a first round upset.  According to ESPN’s BPI, Davidson has a 42 percent chance to win, making it the most likely 12-5 upset.  Gary Parrish and Jerry Palm of CBS picked the 5.5-point underdogs to defeat Kentucky in the first round.

Kentucky fans may dismiss the notion, but even John Calipari knows his Wildcats could be eliminated tonight. “They’re going to take 30 3-point shots,” Cal said yesterday. “If they make 20, it has been a heck of a season for us.”

Davidson will shoot, and make, a ton of three-pointers.  A 39.1 percent shooting team from long-range, they are ranked seventh in the nation in three-pointers made with 10.7 per game.  Here’s how the two Wildcats stack up in every statistical category:

TV, Radio, Vegas

TV — Tip-off vs. Davidson is at approximately 7:10 on CBS with Brian Anderson, Chris Webber and Lisa Byington on the call.

Radio — The KSR Pregame Show begins at 4:30 on 630 WLAP.  Hear Leach and Pratt on the UK Sports Network, Sirius-138 and XM-202.

Vegas — UK -5.5

UK Players LOVE Boise!

Well, they don’t hate it.  Asked often by the local media about about their first impressions of the town, most of the answers included “potatoes” and/or “mountains.”

If you thought that was entertaining, wait until you see players guess songs of the 90s.  Apparently, boy bands aren’t very popular on the Kentucky basketball aux cord.  Shout out to Quade Green for calling the “Achy, Breaky Heart” singer “Ray Montana.”

I think the TV talking heads and the sports writers (use the term losely) have to pick underdogs because (1) it makes them look like they more about b-ball than anyone else, and (2) it always happens. In sports, underdogs sometimes win. But not today against OUR CATS!
