Tonight the Cats are back in Lexington after a great win on the road at Alabama. Kentucky and Mississippi State are scheduled to tip-off at 7 and it’s almost sure to be a win. The Bulldogs are sitting at 13th in the SEC and are absent on both polls. Everyone knows that Malik Newman dissed Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio State and several other SEC schools and has been kind of an upset. But, one of their forwards, Gavin Ware, has been lighting it up this year.
A senior on his last go around in Starkvegas, Ware will play his last game in Rupp Arena tonight, and before it gets started, here are five things you need to know about him:
Most importantly, he’s their game play
Yesterday Ben Howland went on the SEC coaches teleconference and talked about Kentucky, playing in Rupp Arena and how they plan to win. While on the line, Howland talked about how they were going to run their offense through their only dominant big guy, — Ware. Ware is averaging 17.2 points per game. That is four more than their guard Newman and more than any one else on their team. He’s scored 10+ points in every game this season and will definitely pose a threat to our big guys, who have been heavily criticized as of late.
He’s the Isaac Humphries of their team
Isaac Humphries is still somewhat of a mystery of us, but not as much as Tai Wynyard. But one of the thing we do know about him: he sings and plays the piano. Well, so does Ware. In Ware’s Instagram bio, he states that singing and playing the guitar is his hobby, posting plenty pictures of his guitar on Twitter.

He’s physical and fouls… a lot.
Ware is 6’9 and 260 pounds, and he uses every single bit of it. Because he is State’s only real inside presence, he has to be physical. That physicality is what is allowing him to average 8 rebounds per game and 65% from field-goal range. On top of that, in half of he games this season, Ware has more than three fouls and he’s fouled out twice.
Trey Lyles got stuffed by him last year
But then Trey did this…
Alex did this too, but in 2013
He was injured earlier this season
In a December lost to Florida State, Ware left the game in the second half with a left knee injury. While he came back the next game, part of the reason the Bulldogs lost was because their only contributor in the paint wasn’t playing. This shows just how vital Ware is to State’s offense and how UK’s bigs must be ‘on point’ tonight.
