Five Immediate Thoughts After The Loss

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Kentucky’s loss at Missouri shouldn’t come as a huge surprise and it shouldn’t be too disappointing. After all, Missouri was the favorite to win in Las Vegas, and the Tigers entered the game riding high after a big road win at Alabama, while Kentucky was lucky to beat Vanderbilt at home in its last game.

But the way Kentucky lost was a huge surprise and it was disappointing because the Cats looked pretty terrible. I think that’s fair to say. It was ugly.

Here are five things on my mind…

1. Hamidou Diallo is not a smart basketball player.

For all of his God-given length and athleticism, Hamidou Diallo still isn’t a good basketball player. That’s not to say he can’t do great things with a basketball in his hands, but he lacks the IQ to know what is going on around him in the game. We saw another example of it late in the game when he fouled a Missouri player as Missouri was seconds away from turning the ball over in the backcourt. Calipari was livid with Diallo for the foul, which they had clearly discussed moments earlier. It’s one of several mental mistakes from Diallo this season.

2. Jarred Vanderbilt will be even better when he stops arguing calls.

Vanderbilt was one of the few guys in blue to play a decent game in the loss, so it’s hard to be overly critical of him today. But he is costing himself and his team by stopping in the middle of a play to turn and argue with the ref. Many times he had a good argument because there were a couple times when he got hammered and it wasn’t called, but he has to play through it, whether it is fair or not. Too many times today he was the last one to cross half-court because he was back arguing his case with the official on the other end. It made for some easy transition buckets for Missouri, and even the announcers were calling him out for it. He has to keep playing — because when he’s playing, he’s bringing the most energy on the floor.

3. How does Nick Richards keep missing dunks?

He did it again. I don’t understand.

4. The three-point streak is barely hanging on.

I thought today was the day the streak would end. You did too. Don’t lie.

Will it end before the year is over? If this team can hang on, we’ll be fine next year.

5. Kentucky can’t win when Kevin Knox is a no-show.

Kentucky has plenty of good pieces, but Kevin Knox is still the most important one. He carried his team to an amazing comeback win at West Virginia, and then he watched his team fall to Missouri with only five points to his name. He doesn’t have to go for 30+ every game, but he has to contribute more than five. It leaves too much scoring for everyone else, and everyone else can’t score enough without him.

Personally, I can’t wait for football season, but the journey would be a lot better if this basketball team played better.

More often than not the team that can’t put a round ball through a round basket in this game looses

Telling players not to foul and then Hami fouling isn’t bad coaching, its young players making mistakes. Can’t put it all on the coaching. Cal does make mistakes, a lot of times because he loses his composure, but to say he’s a bad coach is boneheaded

    Blah … Blah … Blah …

It’s stupid to care more than the players care.

Here’s a thought. How about we spot our opponents 15 points at the start of the game? Got that…15-0 at the opening tip?
That way….we have more time to ketchup…haw haw.

How can you recruit so many kids who can’t shoot??

    • RealCatsFan
      6:50 pm February 3, 2018 Permalink

Most of them can shoot, when it is a decent shot that is not off balance or contested. Trouble is, since they are still in their AAU mode playing parking lot ball, most of the time it is one-on-one or one-on-three basketball with off balance, contested shots that are hard for anyone to hit. Shooting percentages will go up when they get back to sharing the ball and moving on offense. I think Cal is frustrated with it too, but it’s obvious he hasn’t figured out how to get it though their thick skulls. Count K is having similar problems with his team, and he has a senior guard running things for him.

No more one and dones….just the dones.
I wish these kids the best, Not their fault.
But Ky deserves better than the self-gratifying attempts by Calapari to make a name for himself…
Ky fans want winners, not NBA draft titles…
    Rome burns while Cal fiddles……

NBA draft picks and winning goes hand-in-hand in this day and age. How about we get players who aren’t good enough to go to the NBA just so you can satisfy your selfish need to “fall in love” with our team? Talk about self-gratifying. Maybe we can be competitive every 3-4 years if we do that!

Not that it made any difference in the final score, but how was Missouri’s Jordan Geist allowed to stay in the game after committing his second flagrant 1 foul against Alexander? I thought that two flagrant 1 fouls was an automatic ejection.

I was wandering the same thing. True he wasn’t that big of an impact on the game but he is another capable player they got to use that in my understanding should not have been allowed to play. Announcers even said that’s his 2nd technical. Did the rules change or something.

Hamidou Diallo = Archie Goodwin, Part II

    • KayutsBy90
      7:49 am February 4, 2018 Permalink

Sadly I think Archie might have been better. He definitely had the ball more with that group than Diallo does. That could have contributed to both the good and the bad for him.

Most of Richards missed dunks are when he pulls down on the rim while trying to throw it down.
