FINAL: Kentucky survives, pushes past Vanderbilt 71-62

It wasn’t always pretty, but the Kentucky Wildcats got it done against Vanderbilt Wednesday night, winning 71-62 inside Rupp Arena. Although the Cats eventually won by nine points, the game itself actually felt much closer. Kentucky trailed 35-28 at halftime, and the Cats and the Commodores traded leads six times throughout the matchup. UK led the game for just over 19 minutes.

Tyrese Maxey and Nick Richards were both big contributors down the stretch. Maxey ended the night with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists; Richards added 15 points and 11 boards. Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley both finished with double-digit scoring as well, adding 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Kentucky shot 46 percent from the floor and 30 percent from behind-the-arc.

Here’s a look at the final stats.

Did anybody else catch the announcer’s burn on the Rupp crowd?

At the 10:19 time out one of the announcers said “You know how good Vanderbilt has been in this game? Efficient … They’ve got the crowd into this game … at Rupp.”

Yeah our game fans are not very good, I’d love to see Rupp with a crowd like the Texas Tech crowd, that was amazing.

They should leave the lights down all game. The younger fans would be more fired up, and the blue hairs would fall asleep and no one on TV would see them sleeping.

Hagans has got to stop turning the ball over. He’s gotta limit it to 3 or less a game. Quickley needs to find his stroke again, & our bench needs to bring more to the table. Other than that, I’ll take the W & onto the next. Saturday @ Auburn will be another true road test. Let’s get some revenge Cats!

We would have won by 19+ if Nick played the entire first half instead of just 5 minutes.

He has to learn if he’s out of position, just let the guy have the bucket; we can’t afford to have him on the bench.

Keeping Nick and Ashton out of foul trouble will be key for our chances in the postseason.

Tyrese was big, when he is scoring in bunches I think Kentucky is at their best because he opens the floor for the whole team……

All those 15 points and 11 rebounds in 22 minutes for Nick! That’s efficiency and making the most of your PT

I wasn’t big on this team at first . Their potential is scary huge right now & everyone can see it . This is one of those teams you can see having a good tourney with these triplets

We cannot afford Nick to get into foul trouble in the post season.

Happy to see Maxey have a good game again. Is the MVP Richards or Hagans? They each make the other better and play off each other so well.

Vanderbilt player better than what they have shown all year and put us back on our heels, but the team locked down and refused to lose. I think there were several teachable moments that, if recognized and addressed, will help us down the road. One that comes to mind is face-guarding 30 feet from the basket, which is unnecessary and runs the risk of break away drives. Maxey comes to mind. If we can fine tune our game as we move forward, it bodes well for March. I like the team’s composure and desire to win. Go Cats.

Cal better get off his high horse and mix in more zone defense. Hagans is a turnover machine so out of control. Never thought I would say this but Nick is the key to our season. Nate and EJ must do better on rebounding and our guards have to do better playing defense.

Oh dear I sure hope Cal reads your analysis dave1964 or the Cats are doomed I tell you DOOMED!

I’d say good to win, but mostly an embarrassing effort.
