FINAL: Kentucky falls to Utah 69-66

In the team’s first game in Las Vegas, the Kentucky Wildcats fell to the Utah Utes by a final score of 69-66.

Down by as many as 17 points in the second half, UK clawed back to tie the game late in the game. Unfortunately, the Wildcats missed a three at the buzzer to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Tyrese Maxey led Kentucky with 18 points (7-13 shooting) to go with one rebound and one assist. Ashton Hagans was right behind with 16 points on 5-14 shooting, three rebounds, eight assists, and four steals.

For Utah, Timmy Allen led the way with 25 points (8-15 shooting), nine rebounds, and four assists. Both Gach added 14 points, while Rylan Jones and Branden Carlson rounded out double-digit scorers with 12 and 10 points apiece, respectively.

Here is the entire box score:

With the loss, Kentucky moves to 8-2 on the year with a date with the Ohio State Buckeyes set for Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas.

Not very good right now. Can easily see this team losing 10+ games if something doesn’t change.

Agreed. This is just not a very good team skill-wise. They lost 4 players from last year that were better than anyone on this team, and that team failed to go beyond the elite 8. On a brighter note….next year’s class is a monster….LOL. This will be a long year. Luckily the SEC sucks as bad as we do.

Just a thought, maybe we should recruit some white shooters.

They don’t necessarily need to be white, although we do need some guys that are pure shooters. A guy like the little white dude for Utah is somebody we need. If he’s a main guard, like he is for Utah, you’re in trouble. But if he’s mixed in with elite players, he’s exactly what you need.

Will haunt us all year long…2-17 from 3. It’s not going to get much better overall, because collectively these guys are not good shooters. Cal’s blind spot regarding this with recruiting is very frustrating.

How many games do u deserve to win when ur center scores 5 and ur guards go 1-12 from 3? None.

Every team has off nights. I can’t blame them, both teams fought hard did their best. Terrible officiating played a big factor, but what’s even worse than the loss was the two dudes calling the game. Proud of my team for fighting as hard as they did! Go cats!

Ummm we got the benefit of most of the bad calls. We rebounded poorly, shot worse, Can’t guard the perimeter and frankly don’t look very well coached right now.

If Cal wants to trot out not quite elite athletes and get them drafted year after year, he can do that anywhere. Our program is bigger than that, I want off the ride.

Seriously dude, you know since Cals been here we have the most everything as far as wins goes, and winning is the name of the game. I wish we had another title or two for sure, but no coach- not one- has done better than Cal and its not my opinion, it’s fact.

Utah used the same strategy that Auburn used in the NCAA tournament last year. Evansville and Utah used the same game plan. The SEC teams are licking their chops to use this game plan. Utah was picked to finish 9th in their conference. The amazing thing to me is, how our multi-million dollar coaching staff cannot figure out how to defend this? Really?

The SEC looks like a hot mess right now apart from Auburn. They all look as bad as we do which is to say quite bad.

What is likely to happen come tournament time when the game tends to become more of a half court affair? We will have to hit 3’s and jumpers even more than now against good teams consistently to win.

Once again, we have a hair-pullingly awful game in the noncon. Once again we will start to turn the corner in the next few weeks. Once again we will go on a run in the tournament. Once again, these comments won’t age well. When will the keyboard warriors realize this is a process and Cal will have us where we need to be come tourney time.

We need a Ryan McMahon. Solid player, but can really shoot. Too 75-100 guy, no real nba chance, but can light it up. You really need one or two of those guys to mix in, but Cal just doesn’t like recruiting them.

It isn’t just the bad shooting – it’s the failure to guard the line, collapsing on D when we don’t need help, and Bill Walton may be stoned but he’s right, If you have a 7 foot rim protector you don’t need to double down on the blocks and free up a three point shooter! How can we not know this? And after three years how connect Richards still leave his feet to try and block a guards shot? Are they just not a smart team or are they not well coached by our highly paid assistants? I

Obviously there are other problems, but they are fixable for the most part. Guys can become better shooters, but we just need a real specialist. Not a pretty good shooter like Juzang or Jemarl Baker, but a just short unathletic basketball player, but highly skilled and can just flat stoke it.

UKBradstith. I would take the following over the 10 million dollar man:
    1. Jay Wright Villanova
    2. Bruce Pearl. Auburn
    3. Chris Mack. Louisville
    4. Chris Beard. Texas Tech
    5. Chris Holtman. Ohio State

That is 5 coaches. I can give you more if you like and they will not cost 10 million per season with a lifetime contract. This contract has set a bad precedent for UK in my opinion. John Wooden is the only coach worth that kind of contract. 12 Final Fours in 13 years with 10 titles in college basketball. Saban and Bryant are worth that in college football with their combined 12 titles.

Seriously why do you care whether he makes 6 mil or 10 mil or 20 mil. It’s not your money and doesn’t change the price of admission or concessions one bit. As for your list, none of those guys have done at their schools what Cal has done at Memphis or U.K. those are all excellent choices if you’re looking for a replacement, but there is no indication they’d be more successful at U.K. Other than Jay Wright, all of those guys are failures by your standards, so why would you want a guy that has won less and had less tourney success than what you have now?

Cal clearly earned his paycheck the first six years, so give credit where credit is due. It has been a different story since 2015. Tonight we were double digit favorites and lost to a team with inferior talent. We lost to the Evansville Purple Aces earlier in the year and had that humiliating lost to Duke last year. We have been knocked out of the tournament in recent years by teams that we should have beaten. Those are facts.

Failures? Really? 2 of the 4 went to the final Four last year. The other 2 will make a Final Four before UK does again. As far as salary, the taxpayers in this state pays his salary as well as the .overpriced K Fund. Look at this list of coaches with 4 yrs without a Final Four and the result:
    1. UCLA – Ben Howl and and Steve Alford. Both fired.
    2. Indiana- Tom Cream. Fired. I believe Archie Miller will not last.much longer.
    3. Ohio State- Thad Matt’s. Fired
    4. UConn- Kevin Ollie. Fired

John V. Calipari at UK. 4 million dollar raise per season with a lifetime contract. This is not a good precedent set by the UK administration. He is considered a state employee. That is how Rupp was forced out. Mandatory state employee retirement is 72 for a full-time employee.

Failures as in other than Wright, none of them have won a championship, genius. Cal has been to the FF more than any of them. You can’t predict the future so “the other two will” comment means nothing. Also, guess how many years Wright went without making a Final Four before his championships…hint: more than 4.

I agree about his first 6 yrs Delray Cat. He also has 2 things in common over the last 2 yrs.
    1. He lost to coaches with the same 1st name which is Bruce.
    2. Both coaches were missing their best players. Dean Wade and Chuma Okeke.
    He still got outcoached.

8-10 times a year the same people get to say Cal can’t deliver bc the team lays an egg. The fact is that Kentucky’s record over the last decade has not been matched by anyone, and my opinion is that credit goes to the head coach not the fans, who endured far worse for years. But that doesn’t mean that his assistants get lifetime contracts. Did it ever occur to anyone but the reason no one hires Joel Justis or Tony Barbeedespite the fact they are longtime assistance that Kentucky is that they aren’t that good?
