In yet another rowdy environment on the road, the Kentucky Wildcats found a way to come out victorious, defeating LSU by a final score of 79-76.

Going into the matchup as an underdog, the Wildcats managed to put together an impressive second-half offensive display to solidify the win.

Immanuel Quickley led Kentucky with 21 points on 7-12 shooting and 2-4 from three to go with four rebounds, six assists, and three steals in 37 minutes of action.

Tyrese Maxey added 14 points on 5-15 shooting and 1-4 from three, also finishing with four rebounds, three assists, and a block.

Right behind Maxey was Nick Richards with 13 points (5-8 shooting), six rebounds, and six blocks in 31 minutes.

Ashton Hagans – who left with a left leg contusion – and Nate Sestina rounded out double-digit scorers with 11 points apiece.

As a team, the Wildcats shot 74% from the field and 88% from three in the second half to finish the day shooting 47.5% overall and 50% from beyond the arc. As for the Tigers, they finished the day shooting 39.4% overall and 35% from three.

Check out the entire box score:

With the win, Kentucky moves to 21-5 on the year and 11-2 in conference play, giving the Cats a 1.5-game cushion in the SEC with just five regular season games to go.

Big win in a tough place. Selfishly, I sure would like a snoozer instead of down to the wire games.

Yep, we blew a 15 point lead very quickly. Missed Hagans, but the other guys looked like they never saw a press before.

Gutsy win in the end with Hagans out, but Cal’s gotta talk to the guys there. Brooks inbounding, throws it to Sestina, he gets doubled, throws it away twice.

That’s not just on Nate. That’s on Brooks. That’s on Maxey and Quickley for not getting to the ball (especially to maybe draw fouls). Most importantly, that’s on Cal for not screaming at the players that we had 2 Time Outs, don’t throw the ball away if you get trapped.

I hate it when we end games with timeouts when the guys are playing rattled. Call a timeout, draw up an inbounds play that isn’t Brooks throwing it to Sestina.

And God love ya, Cal and Barbee and everyone else on the staff, but you’re doing something wrong that we shoot 3s like this on the road and not in Rupp. It’s not just a shrug situation. Not an “our overall wins in Rupp show we’re fine” thing (since overall wins are bolstered by like 8 cupcakes at home every year). Something’s wrong with practices or Rupp’s rims or something.

Just out of curiosity, I’d like to see what opponents are averaging in 3 pt % at Rupp vs. us. I’d be willing to bet it’s not the rims…

Valid points about Brooks and Sestina, AND the guards not going to the ball.

Glad we come away with the win but geez you have a 15 point lead and you just fall apart I hate trying to run the clock out run your dang offense. We have to be better at breaking the press with so many guards.

Dave, did you think before the game, or a month ago that we would get a win in Baton Rouge? No you didn’t…and now that we have one you’re looking to gripe about anything you can think of. Try living in the moment and enjoy the win. You are a fan, right?

    • ClutchCargo

Losing Hagans on that terrible no-call put us in a bad spot late in the game. But we have to be smarter about who we throw the ball to against a decent press.

I read these comments and I wonder if I looked at the scoreboard wrong. We won a tough conference game on the road and we are currently in first place in the conference. Why even watch basketball if you’re going to be miserable after we win games?

That righteous guy sure was confident in his saying UK would go down tonight. Too bad that he, like everything else, was wrong about this. Also, he used that cringey “eaux“ spelling in his shlt talking earlier. You, and everyone else that lives that stupid stuff need to realize that spelling any long O sounds like that is dumb. Hope you’re enjoying that crow pie that’s getting stuffed in your mouth this Tuesday evening, god knows it won’t be the worst thing getting shoved in there tonight.

Well Cal Lovers Wolfpack tonight is your night but I believe next month UK loses a game like this when the Coach has a lead like tonight and then has his team take the foot off of the gas and plays not to lose in the last 4 minutes of the game! You cannot put these players in that kind of pressure in the NCAA tournament! This movie has played out before!

  13. lexattorney

LSU is a very good team. Their players are very limited talent wise BUT they play together and they play tough. If UK showed even 1/3 of that effort they would be undefeated right now. With that being said this was a massive win despite the pitiful showing over about a 4 minute span where they nearly blew a 15 point lead. A month ago this would have been a loss so it is at least somewhat encouraging. Also, LSU being unranked while Michigan State still hangs on makes TOTAL sense…yeah…

  14. The Big Lebowski
    12:22 am February 19, 2020 Permalink

I was worried about this one.

Great win on the road. Any win against a ranked team on the road is a good win. LSU is no slouch.

Sestina finally puts together a good game (minus those last 90 seconds).

Cal has to work on these guys panicking w/o Hagans. They nearly fell apart and lost this game in the final seconds.

    That was crazy.

  15. The Big Lebowski
    12:24 am February 19, 2020 Permalink

Cal needs to work on his game management skills. That is what a coach is for. He might want to players to take charge and a player led team but he’s still the coach. No excuse for the collapse ad near loss when Hagans went out.

  16. The Big Lebowski
    12:26 am February 19, 2020 Permalink

Oh….I thought LSU was ranked. Oops!

Doesn’t matter. Still a good road win. Until that lapse of judgment in the final secs, I never felt that Kentucky would lose this game. Even after the strange loss of discipline and focus, I felt they’d pull it together soon enough to win.
