As badly as we played, had the fouls been called fairly we probably would’ve won.

Tired of people blaming refs. Our guards were getting beat off the dribble the whole game and were fouling trying to catch up. Got so bad Cal had to go to a zone which he hates. Quit making excuses our defense and rebounding killed us. Pearl got the best of Cal again. Hack Candy almost beat us by spreading floor and let their guards take ours off the dribble. Hagans defensive player of year a joke.

Auburn was shooting like 30% from the floor. The refs are the only reason they won.

Wouldn’t come down to the refs helping Auburn out, but the cats had done their job on the glass like I said before the game you cannot win this game in this kind of environment when you give up 17 or more offensive rebounds and a bunch of unforced turnovers you just can’t do it plain simple. If we had done our job on the glass we would have won this game by 10 despite the refs.

I usually agree with Jack’s analysis but my headline would have been “Cats humiliated in the paint, lose again to tougher team.” 16 to 4? That’s ur whole story.

THIS. Even if the officiating is one-sided, when you are more talented at every position that DOES NOT decide the game. What happened tonight was nothing but a total embarrassment. I’m glad I listened so I didn’t have to see this pitiful display.

Blue – yes I watched them beat us to 50/50 balls and put bodies on us and throw balls back at us to go out of bounds over and over. Listen to Cal. See what he focuses on. That’s hustle and muscle and we ought to be ashamed of ourselves. And it was our guards who were in foul trouble most of the game, we got beat worse in the paint than I ever remember seeing.

makeitstop, no doubt we did not play well tonight. But surely you understand how a game can be controlled by the whistles. They were allowed to be aggressive on defense, and on the boards. We were not. Once the fouls start piling up, then we have to be even less aggressive. Advantage Auburn…and they did take advantage of it. We were not good. But they were allowed to play aggressively and we were not..

Ah you can blame the officials if you want cause they have been pretty horrible all season long… But in my view of the game you don’t deserve to win when you give up that many offensive rebounds.. Not going to beat a good team giving them that many extra possessions..

    • Han
      8:36 pm February 1, 2020 Permalink

Auburn didn’t get called for pushing our guys or going over the back. Easy to get offensive rebounds doing that. Also, many of their defensive rebounds were on shots we missed because our shooter got fouled. If their big men were called for the fouls they committed, they don’t get to pull down rebounds on the other end.

Fouls negated a few of the rebounds Kentucky got, that being said this is all Cal’s fault. He asked the refs to be consistent so they consistently screwed UK over.

I only got to watch to the last 4 minutes, and I rarely complain about refs, but this is getting absurd! I don’t know how we played for 36 minutes, but we were up one w/ four to go, had the two worst fouls calls on offensive rebounds I’ve ever seen, good for 4 free throws. they let Wiley shove Nick under the glass for 2 more points. Something had to change. That’s a complete embarrassment to the game. Officiating can’t be that bad, especially down the stretch. This was the Game Day game! Unacceptable.

I’m sure he’ll go pro like everyone else and we will celebrate when he gets a 2 way contract but the kid needs another year and a reality check. Toughen up. Get smarter about the game. He’s showing some things this year – nice blocks tonite – but he’s the 7th best ball player out their tonite at this stage of his development. He’s got potential. But he’s just not big enough or tough enough to play in the paint or good enough from outside to play like he’s Kevin Knox.

Can’t win with Hagans and Nick playing so poorly but we got hammered on the boards. I think the refs were a joke but at some point the players have to realize that if you touch them it’s a foul. Have to make adjustments to poor officiating. I thought when Hagans got back in at the 8 minute mark we were good- but the opposite happened.

Hard to win with 5 playing against 8! Auburn got so many offensive rebounds because their little guys were shoving our big guys and it was not called. If UK got within arm reach of an Auburn player a foul was called. I don’t understand what kept Cal from getting himself thrown out!

Best thing we can do is forget about this game. The refs stunk and we stunk. The crowd was ridiculous, of course Auburn was going to win this game. Had the refs not put all of our guys in foul trouble and not let them shoot 44 FTs would we have won? Probably. But who’s surprised? Refs do this crap in ever game especially in the SEC. It’s ruined college basketball. I hate refs.

We played a good team in a hostile atmosphere and got beat. Ashton had almost as many turnovers as Auburn’s entire team, Nick did not have a good game, and we were beaten badly on the boards. Yes, I know, they had a bunch more foul shots than us, but it was more than that. Hopefully we will learn from the experience and move on. As I have said before, the margin of error for this team is quite small. We have to hit on all cylinders to beat a quality team.

I know we played poorly tonight, but if you can’t see how the officiating is affecting the league then you’re a moron. If you shoot 20 FT’s and get doubled up, that’s a major problem. They’re should never be 40+ fouls in a 40 MINUTE GAME!! More contact in volleyball nowadays, sheesh

I literally think it’s possible he’s part of a point shaving scandal when I. watch him shoot within 3 feet. Never seen anything like it. Again, hate to say it because I think he’s a good kid. But goddamn… PERPLEXING is an appropriate adjective for his game

Little things add up…rebounds, turnovers, steals. Stupid fouls.

Auburn did them, UK did not, bottom line they lost.

Anybody that doesn’t think refs are ruining college basketball are fools. All “haters” of our coach and players are just just basement living trolls! Refs controlled all the negative stats. Its not even basketball anymore!

I like Sestina and I’m sure he’s a great young man. However, the SEC is just to fast and physical for him.

Agreed. Only thing he had going for him was his outside shot, which unfortunately he’s lost.

I feel like we’ve gotten atrocious officiating ever since Coach Cal arrived. But this season has by bar been the worst of them all & it’s damn near been every single game. I’ve never seen anything like it. I watch other teams play twice as physical as us, & get half the fouls called. Wisconsin had 5 fouls against Michigan St with like a minute to go in the 2nd half today. When we play, the other team is in the bonus within the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. The referees have completely taken the fun & enjoyment aspects out of the game for us fans, & I’m sure it’s no different for the players & coaches. I spend most the game complaining & just wishing it were over with.. I don’t know what can be done, but something needs to change because it’s gotten outta hand

Cal called out refs this week. They sent him a message tonight.

It’s easy to say “But if we didn’t do this or that, the refs don’t matter”. Sure – if you’re twenty points better, it doesn’t matter if the officiating only tilts ten points the other way.

Some folks just want to believe – and really, really need to believe – that these games are fair. They are not. It’s not a level playing field. Sometimes, if your team is really, really good – it’s fun to watch them win anyway.

This team is not really, really good. And the game is not fair. It’s rigged – the outcome is not set, but it’s certainly biased one way. And it doesn’t take much to change the outcome of a game like this. 10% will seal the deal.

Full disclosure – I didn’t watch. And haven’t watched for a few years. Because this officiating isn’t anything new. People are just noticing now. Basketball is more like Figure Skating than Track and Field. It’s all about how you please the judges.

They shot more free throws because our players were soft and their guys played hard. We lost because we gave up a ton of offensive rebounds.

People, the game plan is simple: drive down the lane against UK. You will get either a layup, a foul or an open 3 pointer. Bruce Pearl and other coaches know that Calipari does not teach his players to take charges so the officials are not the issue. If you know the other team is waiting to take a charge then you will not drive down the lane as often!

Honestly, I’m happy he doesn’t. Charges have ruined college basketball for far too long now. I’d rather lose by playing the game the right way, then win by teaching these kids to be soft. That’s all people are nowadays.. SOFT. I’m only 24 and I’m ashamed at what the world is becoming

Cal’s idea of coaching is telling his 5 star players to make a play in the huddle. He for darn sure can’t out X and O anyone. He usually can just roll it out there with better players. Not this year.

I remember watching that documentary on Richards coming out of high school. The mom was asked why they chose Kentucky. She said it is because Kentucky can get him to the NBA the fastest. Murray State could have gotten him there just as fast as Cal.

When I played in high school, there was no one in the gym that wanted to win more than my coach, Wayne Martin. When I played, I too, wanted to win as much as my coach. Later in life when I coached there was no one in the gym that wanted to win more than me as a product of Wayne Martin. For Coach Cal to say it’s their team, it’s about what they want, is BS. It starts at the top and everyone feeds off of the Coach. Coach Cal sets the standard and the players will step up to it or they will move on. This is a year we can steal a title, let’s step up and take it. Coach Cal, demand the best of them and if they are “player” they will be there for KENTUCKY.

Essentially, all sports is controlled. It is entertainment. All big time sports we watch on tv is providing money through multiple streams. Advertising and gambling being the top two. When I see a game like this I see a team that was not going to be allowed to leave that tiny gym with a victory. I saw one team allowed to do whatever it wanted and the other being whistled anytime they showed the slightest intensity or effort.. I have seen multiple references to Cal discussing officiating the week leading up to this game and suddenly it made sense to me. They were making an example of Cal and his team and it was from further up the chain than the three refs on the floor. All sports have rules which allow refs to control the outcome or at least keep the game within a certain point spread. Football has holding, which we all know happens on essentially 85% of all plays at every level, baseball has the balls and strikes where you can force a pitcher to throw the ball over the plate and then basketball being the most ridiculous, not only does a team get rewarded foul shots, but the offender can be disqualified from the game itself due to something which is already being covered by possession or shots. This is insane. We do not think about it very often because it has always been so, but it is ridiculous. UK’s aggression was whistled out of them. We were not to win this game at all costs. Yes Hagans was not playing well, but the calls on him were questionable to say the least. He was seen as the most important player to take out of his game. And so it was done. Cal was being punished for daring to speak on the officiating. Sadly this was a big time game, but I assure you the SEC was not going to allow UK to win this game. Auburn was the inferior team at every position. The barrage of fouls on us in the second half is the smoking gone. If we dared to show initiative or go make a play we were punished. This makes a huge difference in how the kids play. It reminds me of the NCAA loss when Murray was called for multiple offensive fouls. We were not supposed to win that game either. Controlled for various reasons, but controlled nonetheless.

Agree blue Crowe. Poor Nick trying to play smart is scared to even attempt to block Shots anymore unless he has plenty of distance from the shooter. Refs are sucking the life out of the game
