FBI wiretaps show Arizona’s Sean Miller discussing $100K payment for DeAndre Ayton

Remember when Kentucky fans complained for months about John Calipari not recruiting No. 1 prospect DeAndre Ayton hard enough?

Now we know why.

According to ESPN sources, Arizona head coach Sean Miller held phone conversations with Christian Dawkins about a $100,000 payment to “ensure” Ayton ended up at Arizona.

FBI wiretaps intercepted telephone conversations between Arizona coach Sean Miller and Christian Dawkins, a key figure in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball corruption, in which Miller discussed paying $100,000 to ensure star freshman Deandre Ayton signed with the Wildcats, sources familiar with the government’s evidence told ESPN.

ESPN reports the Miller-Dawkins phone call was just one of over 3,000 hours of conversations on Dawkins’ phone alone, meaning this is likely just scratching the surface on what else is out there.

With this news, it’s almost a certainty Ayton will be declared ineligible, this season will be vacated for the Wildcats, and Sean Miller very may well be fired.

We’re just getting started, folks…

If they’re already gonna have to vacate the season up to this point, why not just go ahead and play Ayton in the rest of the games anyway? They literally have nothing to lose

Smyrna, they were so busy with the ncaa and Donald Trump, that they let 17 children die in Florida because they didn’t have time to follow-up on credible leads. That in and of itself is an embarrassment.

Well, the FBI employs 35,000 people in DC and their 56 field offices across the US (and Puerto Rico). Agents don’t necessarily work in every area of the FBI, just as I don’t work in every area of my employer’s business. The “bosses” in DC don’t keep tabs on every single thing that every agent in every field office does or doesn’t do.

So, yeah, an agent doing [X] is pretty much independent of an agent doing [Y]; they might do their job comparatively “better” or “worse”, and either one can miss things or make bad judgment calls.

Gotta imagine Miller gets a pretty long show cause penalty. If Pearl got 3 years for a picnic and Sampson got 5 for too many phone calls/texts… How much does Miller get for personally arranging 100k payments to recruits?

Wow, this will be a monster unlike anything we have seen. Good time to be an up and coming young coach, should be lots of openings soon. Really hope no coaches at UK are involved, in my opinion don’t think they were. I am sure they will look into some guys that switched to UK as well as the big gets like Wall, Davis, KAT etc.

Here’s what I think: I don’t think there’s any doubt that Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas, Michigan State, and virtually every other major college program in the country has and has had players who have taken money from agents. I don’t think there’s any question about that, and anyone who thinks otherwise just hasn’t been paying attention (even before this scandal broke). But, scenarios where assistant coaches and head coaches are actively a part of the process, I believe, are fairly isolated, at least in the larger context. I would be absolutely shocked to learn that Calipari, or any of his assistants, wind up on tapes securing money for recruits. And I think the NCAA will ultimately draw that line in the sand, when all is said and done.

There’s no way the NCAA can just vacate wins and put every program on probation that is likely to be implicated in this scandal (because they’d probably not have any left). What I think will ultimately be the difference-maker is situations like Louisville, and now Arizona, where coaches are actively involved. Those programs will get hit, the rest (I think) will get a slap on the wrist, if anything, and the NCAA will ultimately change the rules going forward.

      Well said

    • Han
      11:07 pm February 23, 2018 Permalink

Exactly. There’s only so much a school can do when recruiting to make sure rules weren’t broken. If a player and/or their family take money and don’t tell anyone or flash it around, how is a school supposed to know? Granted, the NCAA has punished teams for it (and let others off the hook), but ultimately the problem there is not with the schools.

    • makeitstop
      12:47 am February 24, 2018 Permalink

AZ1006 I agree. Miller apparently joins Pitino in directing payments to secure recruits….entirely different than agents trying to curry favor w likely stars so they sign w ur agency later. If that happened the FBI is right: the school is the victim, giving a scholarship to a potentially ineligible player. That’s the Complaint. It didn’t make sense to me at first when pitino was directing payments to get Bowen but it does make sense if somebody is paying ur guy to sign w them and compromising their amateur status. Again, tempest in a teapot for the Cats.

This is certainly unfortunate for Miller, but bodes well for the rest of the coaches. At least there are several clearly identifiable dirty coaches out there that will take the fall (Pitino, Miller, the indicted assistant coaches), leaving the rest to plead ignorance and hope it all blows over.

Thought I’d throw this out there for my belief (hope) that we are running a clean program. Notice how we were getting all of the recruits early on in the Cal era, but in the past few years we have been losing out on some big ones. And, coincidentally, an FBI Scandal just occurred regarding the last few years. Calipari is steering us clear of danger.
